005-037 Fuel Pump Timing

General Information

Pump-to-pump timing is extremely critical. Pump timing that is off by only a few crankshaft degrees will cause: 1. Poor performance starting and power 2. Excessive smoke and emissions 3. Poor fuel economy.

Engine pump timing begins with the timing of the fuel injection pump drive gear to the camshaft gear. See the table below to determine which letter on the fuel injection pump drive gear is aligned with the camshaft gear. Engine Model QSB3.9-30 QSB4.5-30 QSB5.9-30 Gear Letter J J C

Each key used with the Bosch VP30 injection pump has an installation arrow. The arrow must always point toward the injection pump. The key does not contain a part number that must be matched to the injection pump dataplate.

To check the static timing: 1. Remove the front gear cover. Refer to Procedure 001-031 for front gear cover. 2. Verify the timing marks on the gear train are aligned. Each key has an installation arrow. The arrow must always point towards the pump. 3. Verify that no gears have slipped on the shaft.

If the above checks are OK, remove the pump. Refer to Procedure 005014. The timing must be checked at an authorized Bosch service shop.
