About NEIS The New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) is a self-employment program funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). NEIS helps eligible unemployed people become self supporting and independent of Centrelink by establishing and running their own business. The NEIS program started in 1985 and is Australias longest running and most successful employment program. After completing their NEIS year most participants are either still in business, employed and/or in some form of education or training. 6,000 businesses a year are established in Australia under this worthwhile program. To ensure the success of the program, NEIS providers carefully select people with viable business ideas. The goal of NEIS is to help you set up a sustainable business. Australian Business Development Centre (ABDC for short) have been NEIS specialists since the program began. We now operate in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. We get to know you from your first enquiry and befriend you and support you through the training and the mentoring phases of the program.

NEIS Assistance Includes: NEIS Training You need a viable business idea before you can be accepted into training e.g. you must be able to predict you could make at least $20,000 in your first year and more in your second year. If accepted after interview, you will need to complete a training program. In response to customer preferences, we mostly offer Certificate III in Micro Business Operations. As you are in receipt of income support, this becomes an Approved Activity with Centrelink which will exempt you from looking for work. Australian Business Development Centre offers training over approximately 8 weeks courses of 2-3 days per week, 1 day workshops, or entirely online for remote students. Over this period of time you are expected to research your business idea, read the training resources you will be given, and write your business plan. You will receive help to develop this business plan as part of your training. The Training Course covers: Researching opportunities, business planning, business and legal requirements, promotional strategies, resources and operating systems, financial plans & bookkeeping

NEIS Allowance Participants who complete the course and commence their business will receive income support in fortnightly instalments for 12 months (equivalent to Newstart Allowance = approximately $12,900). If received prior to NEIS, rental assistance is continued for 6 months. The No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) is made available to each participant. Please note that NEIS does not provide financing or grants for the set-up or the operation of your new business. Mentor Support Mentor support is an essential component of NEIS. Mentors are people with proven business acumen and proven experience in marketing, finance, accounting or other relevant business skills. As a NEIS participant you will receive assistance and business advice from mentors during the first year of your business operation. Your NEIS mentor will meet with you a number of times during this period. How to Enrol in NEIS To be eligible for NEIS you must be unemployed and in receipt of an eligible Centrelink benefit such as Newstart. You can have an ABN and can be trading as long as your business is new, very small scale and/or a hobby. You must be able to get public liability insurance & meet all compliances & laws, you may be asked to get a Police Check. Your JSA may have copies to give you. Ask them to help you to complete the top left corner of the government form. Complete both forms and send them to ABDC as soon as possible. After we receive your application we will send you a Feasibility Study this will help you to check out your idea, and it prepares you for the training course. You can bring the Study to your interview, which will be held before the next course starts.
