Due: Students have been learning about types of animals, habitats, and food chains, As a culminating project, students

are to create a habitat of an animal of their choice. After they research the animal, they need to create a diorama illustrating the animal in its natural habitat and create a written report.

Report Requirements
Students must also create a written report about their animal. This report should be written in paragraph form in the STUDENTs OWN WORDS. They should not copy from a book, magazine, or the internet. Students should be able to accurately and smoothly read their report to the class. 1. Scientific name of the animal species they chose 2. What kind of animal is it and what characteristics make it that type of animal? (mammal, reptile, amphibian, bird, fish) 3. Status of the animal. Is it endangered, threatened, or extinct? 4. What continent is the animal from? 5. Describe the type of environment where the animal lives. (desert, grassland, forest, ocean, etc) 6. What does the animal eat in the wild? Is it an omnivore, carnivore, herbivore? 7. Include any interesting facts you learned.

Directions:
Each student will create a diorama (a scenic representation in which sculpted figures and lifelike details are displayed) showing his/her selected animal in a three dimensional representation of its habitat. To create the diorama project, a shoe box or other small box may be used as the space for the animals home or territory. Students may use a plastic or vinyl toy for their animal, or mold one from clay. Materials such as magazines (for photos), silk or plastic plants, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, glue, construction paper, and other craft items may be used. Creativity is encouraged. PLEASE only help your child when necessary.

Diorama Requirements
A recreation of the appropriate habitat of the animal A small model of the selected animal At least one other animal that would be found in this habitat 3D pictures or objects to show the plants and the environment

Your diorama is very creative and neatly done. You clearly put a lot of effort into this project. You have included at least two animals that would be found in this habitat. You have included more than 1 type of plant native to this animals habitat. Your report contains ALL the required information. You summarized the info you learned. It is clear that this is in your own words. You were very easy to understand and spoke fluently.
