DIVISION 2 - SITE WORK SECTION 02450 - CONCRETE WALKWAYS, CURBS, AND DRIVEWAYS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.

01 DESCRIPTION This Section covers providing construction of concrete curbs, walkways, driveways, and apron. The WORK includes subgrade and base preparation, form work, reinforcing, concrete placement, curing and backfilling according to the dimensions, installation of control and expansion joints shown on the Construction Drawings and as required to complete the WORK acceptable Company Representative. PART 2 - MATERIALS 2.01 CONCRETE Concrete and concrete WORK shall conform to the requirements under DIVISION 3 CONCRETE. 2.02 EXPANSION JOINT FILLERS Filler material shall be either of the non-extruding and resilient bituminous type conforming to ASTM D 1751. 2.03 BASE COURSE Base course shall consist of selected fill material conforming to the requirements of Section-002210, Earthwork. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 CONCRETE FORMS A. Walkways, and Driveway Forms: Forms shall be straight, of sufficient strength to resist springing during depositing and consolidating of concrete, and of a height equal to the full depth of the finished walkway or driveway elevation. Forms shall conform to line and grade. Forms shall be set to provide a minimum transverse slope of 1 percent in finished walkways, unless otherwise shown on the Construction Drawings, with the low side away from the building served. Curb forms: Forms shall be of sufficient strength to resist springing during depositing and consolidating of concrete. Curb forms shall be carefully set to alignment and grade and to conform to the dimensions of the curb. Forms shall be cleaned and coated with form oil each time before concrete is placed.

CONCRETE PLACEMENT AND FINISHING A. Concrete Placement: Concrete shall be placed in one layer of such thickness that when compacted and finished, the concrete will be of the thickness indicated. After concrete has been placed in the forms a strike-off guided by side forms shall be used to bring the surface to the proper section. The concrete shall be tamped and consolidated and the surface shall be finished to grade.

CONCRETE FINISHING A. Walkway and Driveway Finishing: After straight edging, and just before the concrete hardens, the surface shall be finished to a smooth and uniformly fine granular texture, free of waves, irregularities, or tool marks. A light broomed surface shall be produced by brooming with a fiber broom. All slab edges, including those at formed joints, shall be finished carefully with an edger having a radius of 10 mm. The transverse joints shall be edged before brooming, and the brooming shall eliminate the flat surface left by the surface of the edger. Walkway, and Driveway Control and Expansion Joints: Control joints, at maximum 1.5 m on center, shall be formed in the fresh concrete by cutting a groove in the top portion of the slab to a 4 mm width and 1/4 depth using a trowel to part the aggregates and edge tool to dress the groove. Transverse expansion joints shall be installed at walkway returns and opposite expansion joints in adjoining curbs, privacy walls, and doorsteps and not greater than 6.0 meters apart. Longitudinal expansion joints shall be provided between the walkway and any adjoining walls or other structures. Expansion joints shall be filled with 13 mm thick premolded filler strips. Immediately after finishing operations are completed, joint edges shall be rounded with an edging tool having a radius of 10 mm and concrete over the joint filler shall be removed. All expansion joints to slabs, paving, walls, and all other concrete shall be sealed with a suitable sealant, as per Section-07920, Sealants and Caulking and ACI 504R-77-Guide to Joint Sealants. Curb, Concrete Finishing: The edges of the top of the curb shall be rounded with an edging tool to a radius of 45 mm and the surfaces shall be floated and finished with a smooth wood float to true grade and section, and uniform in texture. Floated surfaces shall be brushed with a fine-hair brush with longitudinal strokes. The top surface of entrance shall be finished to grade with a wood float. The front form for the curb surface shall be removed when the concrete is still workable to allow proper finishing of the curb surface. Curb Control and Expansion Joints: Contraction joints shall be so placed that monolithic sections between curb returns will not be less than 1.5 meter. Contraction joint of 1.50 meter maximum spacing, shall be formed in the fresh concrete by cutting a 4mm width and 30mm depth groove on the top portion of the curb being trowel to part the aggregates and edge tool to dress the groove. Expansion joints shall be formed by means of preformed expansion joint filler material cut and shaped to the cross section of curb. Expansion joints shall be SECTION 02450

provided in curb at the end of all returns. Expansion joints shall be at least 13 mm in thickness or as shown on the Construction Drawings and shall be provided in curb at a maximum spacing of 6.0 meters. All expansion joints to slabs, paving, walls, and all other concrete shall be sealed with a suitable sealant, as per Section-07920 Sealants and Caulkings and ACI 504R-77-Guide to Joint Sealants. 3.04 FINISHING Immediately after the finish WORK is completed, the walkways and curb shall be given two coats of an approved liquid membrane curing compound, covered with polyethylene sheet to enhance curing.
