RESIDENTS CORNER
Original stories, poems & articles by our Residents.
THE 4TH OF JULY By Ellen Canterbury
The Declaration of Independence brought before us a newness, a wonder, an unending joy. We live in the land of the free. No tyrant, no tyranny can overcome what we cherish. In the home of the brave, we rest not on our laurels, but daily we strive to make for others, a land of the free. Hard-fought battles have secured this freedom. Now may the glory spread throughout the world, that all may know the joy of freedom.
LIBRARY CORNER
A book is only half read until it is discussed. When I was a teacher of literature, this was the single most method of getting students to fully understand what they read. The ideas in a book, story or poem should be shared with others. If a book is worth reading, it should be worth discussing. This is why the classics are still favorites even after centuries. Its fun and instructive to re-visit the great works of those who have gone before us. We study these books to open and enrich our minds. Every year I attend the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah. Before we attend any of the plays, there is an orientation seminar to help us get the most out of the play. The next day, there are hour-long seminars where we can exchange ideas about what we saw the night before. These seminars are extremely well attended. However, to discuss a book, one doesnt need a large group for effective exchange of ideas. In Tucson, there are many such groups that discuss books. We can do this on a one-on-one basis. We have a group here that informally discusses Lee Childs books because we love his character Jack Reacher. This is fun and often forces us to re-read parts of his books searching for things we may have missed in our initial reading. Fans of certain authors can get together to discuss the story or ideas. The lamp of learning always burns brighter when we listen as others add new and different perspectives. Do you have any ideas on a book discussion you would like to host? Remember that even visually impaired readers can join in discussions because of audio books.
