College Essay- Topic B

An issue of great importance to me is abortion. Abortion is not only deeply important to me on a personal level, but is extremely relevant to everyone nationally. To put it simply, I believe abortion is a despicable and cowardly act, a crime against nature, and atrociously selfish. My opinion isnt motivated by any religious or political ideals, but rather the extraordinary bravery and courage my birth mother showed when she decided to put me up for adoption. Unfortunately I have never met her nor do I even know her name, but I will tell you what I do know. Like so many others, she became pregnant at a very inconveniently young age and did not have the means to support a child. Rather than take the easy way out and have an abortion, she thought of someone other than herself; me. She put me up for adoption and I went on to live a happy and fulfilled life with the wonderful people who I know as my parents. People interpret abortion in different ways, but whether they realize it or not, abortion truly does take life. Someone might argue that abortion is ok, because its not actually killing someone. This is true; you are not physically harming the bodily functions of another human being, but you are in every way taking that persons life and snuffing out everything they would have done and contributed to the world. Steve Jobs is a perfect example of this, if he hadnt been put up for adoption, then all of his influential contributions to society would have never seen the light of day. There is a large part of our population that has been aborted, and dont have the ability to speak for themselves. People need to start considering what the child would want, and less about the easy way out of a bad situation. Its their life that is affected the most. By now, it is probably very apparent to you that I am against abortion. However, I have not said that abortion should be illegal. Its not my place to make that decision nor is any elected officials place to decide whether its legal or illegal. Its not a political or religious problem. Its a human problem that affects not only women, but men as well. Its our place to make that decision as people. Someday, we may get to revisit this issue and make a better decision, but I can only hope that by then, people are more educated about the benefits of adoption and the tragedies of abortion. One day, I hope to play a part in educating those people by starting a foundation that promotes adoption awareness. (I think I just now invented that term by the way. You heard it here first!) When the day comes that I have the financial means to create such a foundation, it would have been made possible by the Louisiana State University that equipped me with the knowledge and skills to save lives just as I was saved.
