(Please call or email to make an appointment). Course Description: BIOL 1000 Heredity and Society (3). This course is designed to introduce the student to the role of science, especially genetics, in seeking solutions to societal problems. Interdisciplinary in approach and does not require or assume any background in biology. Biology 1000 is a 3-hour credit course. Required Text(s): Human Genetics and Society. 2nd Edition. Yashon and Cummings. 2012,2009 Student Learning Outcomes: Students are expected to develop a basic understanding of transmission genetics, patterns of inheritance, genetic disorders, and genetic technology and an appreciation of their implications to individual and societal concerns. Students are expected to develop a basic understanding in the following areas: Explain and understand the development of genetics as a discipline Describe and compare the concepts of mitosis, meiosis, the cell cycle Explain Mendelian laws of inheritance and analyze pedigrees Understand structure of DNA, DNA replication, chromosomal organization and discuss role of DNA in inheritance and the importance of genes Describe genetic disorders in humans Understand biotechnology concepts and its role in society Understand the ethical issues raised by genetic engineering

Course Requirements, Expectations and Evaluations A. CLASS ATTENDANCE AND POLICY Attendance will only be taken at the beginning of the class periods. If you are tardy, it is your responsibility to contact me immediately after class to be certain your attendance is recorded. Each student is expected to be present for every lecture period. The attendance policy of the University will be adhered to as stated in the college catalog. Students are responsible for all materials covered in the lectures, even if these lectures were missed for valid reasons.

Do not miss a class unless it is an emergency. Instructor reserves the right to dismiss a student for excessive absences or tardiness. Sleeping during class will result in being marked absent. If the student decides to drop the class and the appropriate forms are not filled out a grade of WF may result.
Tardiness: Students are considered tardy if they are not in the classroom at the beginning of class. Two tardies translates into an absence. Missing more than twenty minutes of any class is considered an absence. If you are absent from class please refer to the following list as to what youre responsible for: o Students are expected to contact a classmate, the instructor or refer to blackboard to obtain information regarding missed class work and homework assignments. It is possible that information regarding upcoming classroom events that are not on the syllabus will be given during class and students should ask a classmate or check blackboard for this information as well. o Students are expected to enter class prepared EVERYDAY regardless of possible absences. There are NO excuses for not being prepared for class. o Students are expected to communicate with the instructor regarding potential absences. Arriving Late or Leaving Early Policy: Students who are not present at the start of class will be considered tardy. Two tardies will equal an absence. Also, students leaving class early without prior permission from the instructor will be counted as absent. Any amendments to this policy are at the full discretion of the instructor.

B EXAMS STYLE/FORMAT: Three exams will be given throughout the course. The exams are designed to assess your knowledge, understanding and application of materials covered. There will be no MAKE UP EXAM OR TEST, without a valid written excuse within ONE WEEK of the missed exam or test date. The make-up will consist of essay style questions. Quizzes: In order to provide you with practice for the exam questions, you may be given unannounced quizzes. There will be no make-up quizzes. If you miss a quiz, you will receive a zero. C. CHEATING Suspicion of cheating will be handled firmly and promptly. A grade of 0 will result on any examination, test, quiz or assignment on which cheating has taken place. Possible evidence of cheating includes unusual correspondence between answers on a test, exam, quiz or assignment; gesturing or talking during an examination or a test may be misconstrued as cheating. The parties involved will be penalized. I do not have to warn the students involved before taking the appropriate action. D. COURSE EVALUATION Evaluation: Lecture tests HW/Projects Quizzes Final Exam Course Attendance/Performance 100pts - 200pts each 10pts - 200pts each 10pts - 50pts each 200pts 100 pts

You will have approximately 1 quiz per week. You cannot make up a missed quiz; however, your lowest 2 quizzes will be dropped. Dividing the number of points earned by the number of points possible (times 100) will give you your grade percentage: Points earned x 100 = Grade Percentage Points Possible Grading Scale: 10 Point Scale 90-100% A 81-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D <60% F *Class performance- (e.g. attendance, preparedness, conduct, all assignments)
Please make note-*Conduct- If you disrupt class, disrespect the instructor or a classmate, you will not receive a class performance grade. If removed from class for disruption, please submit the following: a single-spaced essay( 3-15 pgs, 1top ,bottom and both sides) and a written and oral apology to class and instructor before returning to class. Student will not be allowed to return until essays/apologies are submitted to and read by the instructor before next class period. Submit early to give ample time for instructors approval.

Additional grading information: No grade of I will be given in lieu of a failing grade in this course under any circumstances. I grade will be given only if a student has been making satisfactory progress in the course and for unavoidable reason (which is documented) misses the final. Assignments I will take into account for final grades your attendance, tardiness, conduct and all assignments. All written assignments and homework must be turned in on time per assignment sheet. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! I do not accept late assignments. If you do not turn in your work, you will get a zero. E. RULES AND REGULATIONS No habitual tardiness. Turn off ALL electronic equipment.
