SECTION A (READING) 20 MARKS

Q1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: Three Decades of Industrial Development (12)
The pace and pattern of Indias industrialisation over the three decades have been influenced by a variety of factors. The public sector and the private sector, indigenous capital and foreign capital, sophisticated technology and traditional crafts, mammoth corporations and cottage industries have played their part within the policy framework outlined by Jawaharlal Nehru. Its main features commitment to planning and the adoption of mixed economy with a dominant role for the public sector had their roots in Indias socio-political ethos. But, having regard to the kind of environment in which the industrialisation effort was launched and the shortages that impeded it, the path chosen could well have been chalked out on purely pragmatic considerations. Long before independence, the low level of industrialisation had been identified as the major cause of Indias economic backwardness and the poverty of the people. Top Indian industrialists, economists and political leaders had formulated a 15-year plan for rapid industrial advance in order to double the national income. With this prior consensus in favour of planning, the Planning Commission was set up by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru under his own chairmanship, as an expert non-political body to draw up five-year plans for Indias economic development. The first constraints which the planners faced, in their attempts to set up investment in industry and agriculture, transport and mining as well as in education and health, was the shortage of capital. With the low per-capita income of the people, barely enough for sustenance, the level of voluntary savings was miserably low. The state had to mobilise savings through taxation and borrowings. These resources were used for public sector investments in infrastructure, power and railways, as well as in some key industries, which called for heavy investment of a magnitude which could not be readily raised by private parties. At the same time, to help the private sector fulfil the targets assigned by the planners, financial institutions were created to provide long-term loans and support equity issues. Q1.1 On the basis of your reading of the above passage, complete the following: 1 X 5 =(5)

Q2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (8) The Dwarfing of the Human Race Scientists engaged in the study of the morphology of the human race, are of the opinion that throughout the 200,000 years of the history of modern humans, we are the shortest, lightest and least robust. Even our brains are the smallest. Most of the anthropologists all over the world say that the shrinking process began 200,000 years ago and still continues. It gathered pace at the end of the Ice Age 10,000 years ago, but slowed down a few thousand years ago. Biologists believe that this is unlikely to continue indefinitely and after a few generations the shrinking would again gain momentum. The reasons behind these reductions in size are still unknown, but two hypotheses have been put forward. The first one is that the nutritional stress after the start of the agricultural era, some 10,000 years ago, led to the reduction in the size of humans. Before the agricultural era, there was no domestication of crops and animals. Man was a hunter and gatherer. He was more robust and tall as he was involved in more physical labour. After the era of agriculture, physical labour became less intense and as such the dwarfing of the human race took place. And when humans began to cook food, teeth were not so vital and thus began to shrink. This happened at different times in different parts of the world. Another hypothesis links human shrinkage with global warming. The one change that has applied universally is the increase in global temperature during the past few thousand years. Mr. Maciej Henneberg of the University of Johannesburg, has put forward another theory in which he relates body size to the position of the Earth in its orbit. He says that individuals born between February and July end up shorter and lighter than those born during the rest of the year. It is also possible that long term shifts in the Earths orbit may have resulted in the dwarfing of human beings. But it will require a lot of astronomical data to even try to prove this theory. Whatever may be the reason, the human race will obviously not be tall forever. The technological, social and astronomical factors that had influenced human stature in the past, will influence it in the future too. Q2.1 On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following questions as briefly as possible. (7) (a) Morphologists have revealed that _________________________________________________ 1

(b) Because of physical labour man _________________________________________________ 2 (c) The two main reasons behind human shrinkage are (i) ______________________________ 2 (ii) ________________________________________________________________ (d) In what ways has the astronomical factor influenced the human stature? 2 _______________________________________________________________________________ Q2.2 Find the words from the passage which are similar in their meaning to those of given below: X 2 = (1) a) b) The scientific study of the structure or formation of plants and animal (Para 1) ___________ Assumption (Para 4) ________________
