Healing Lake Erie with improved lawn care

BY DONNA LUEKE In the U.S. alone, according to the Lawn Institute, it is estimated that there are more than 31 million acres of grass, an area equal insize to the New England states. Over 80% of this grass is found in residential lawns. Last week a group of homeowners on Catawba invited Becky Simpson and Mike Libben of the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District (OSWCD) to their homes to make suggestions on how to be better stewards of the environment. Cindy and John Minier and Katie and Dave Kellner of Orchard Beach are particularly motivated because Lake Erie is their front yard. The Miniers ornamental pond welcomes guests. The pond has a small waterfall and fountain to keep the water moving and the pond healthy, plants and fish and four frogs that just moved in. When Minier encountered a mowing problem with a mound of poor soil, he replaced it with the pond, creating habitat and an area that no longer needs to be mowed.

Mowing

Next attention turned to the lawn. Minier uses a mulching mower and leaves the grass clippings on the lawn. Libben said that is one of the most important things that homeowners can do, that grass clippings provide many nutrients. Simpson concurred, adding that means less need for fertilizer. She also offered that it is generally better to mow the grass higher, since the roots are as long as the grass is high--the longer the grass, the stronger the roots. Dave Kellner, Miniers neighbor who keeps his grass longer than Miniers, was glad to hear that fact.

Left to right, Becky Simpson, Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District (OSWCD); Michael Libben, OSWCD; Cindy and John Minier; Dave and Katie Kellner.

Watering

The next topic was watering. If you are going to water, keep watering, advised Simpson, but most people water more than needed. About an inch a week maintains a healthy lawn, an hour every third day. A lot of people have timers, better to manage the watering. Libben added that when the grass does go dormant in late summer, it is the time to stop watering. It is not dead. Just leave it. It will come back.

With herbicides and insecticides, Libben advised read the label. Use according to directions and dont overdo.

Flowerbeds

Fertilizing

Two ways to hold the soil and nutrients on a bank, in the foreground and the background.

Earlier this year, in realizing the importance to the health of Lake Erie and other bodies of water, the manufacturer Scotts Miracle-Gro, based in Marysville, OH, removed phosphorus from its TurfBuilder lawn fertilizer. Phosphorus is one of the main causes of the algae bloom on Lake Erie. Libben suggests taking a soil sample to determine what fertilizer is needed, and to always check that fertilizer does not contain phosphorus. The OSU extension office has soil testing kits. He also suggested dont go right to the edge when applying fertilizer, to lessen run-off.

Both residences have flowerbeds around the house and near the water. The flowerbeds act as a buffer zone that filters runoff and absorbs chemicals. Mulch and rain barrels were the points of discussion about flowerbeds. Mulch is important not just aesthetically and to save weeding, but it reduces the need for watering and keeps the water in the soil rather than running off, said Simpson. Older mulch is better for plants. The younger mulch breaks down and takes up nutrients. Katie added that she learned a lot about mulch and composting from an OSWCD seminar that she attended, and that their homeowners association gets mulch from Catawba Township each spring when they have their neighborhood clean-up day. The residents all help spread mulch in the common areas. Simpson noted that it is important to use a porous mulch in

Croghan Colonial acquiring National Bank of Ohio

Croghan Bancshares Inc., the holding company for Croghan Colonial Bank, and Indebancorp, the holding company for National Bank of Ohio announced today that they have signed a definitive agreement under which Croghan will acquire Indebancorp in a stock and cash merger transaction. Shareholders of Indebancorp will be entitled to elect to receive for each Indebancorp common share either $55 in cash, 1.630 shares of Croghans common stock, or a combination of cash and stock, subject to the overall consideration being 70% stock and 30% cash. Based upon the previous 20 day average closing price for Croghan of $34.40, the transaction is valued at approximately $28.9 million. The merger is expected to qualify as a tax-free reorganization. National Bank of Ohio operates four full-service branches in Oak Harbor, Port Clinton, Oregon and Curtice, and two Loan Production Offices in Perrysburg and Fremont, and has approximately $219 million of assets and $188 million of deposits. When the transaction is completed, Croghan will have approximately $850 million in assets and $718 million in deposits. The merger will enable Croghan to expand in the Ottawa, Wood, and Lucas County markets. Subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals, the transaction is anticipated to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2013. At that time, National Bank of Ohio will merge with and into Croghan Colonial Bank and National Bank of Ohios offices will become branches of Croghan Colonial Bank. Excluding one-time merger expenses, the transaction is expected to be accretive to Croghans earnings per share in the first full year of combined operations. On a pro-forma basis, Croghan is expected to remain well-capitalized under all regulatory definitions. Rick M. Robertson, President and CEO of Croghan, said We believe the combination of Croghan Colonial Bank and National Bank of Ohio is a win-win for shareholders and customers of both banks. Both banks have a proud history of community and customer service; our plans are certainly to maintain that community bank approach in all of our markets. Dean Davis, Chairman of National Bank of Ohio indicated that, This is a merger of two quality financial institutions with similar cultures and philosophies. We believe that this transaction will benefit the shareholders of both companies. From a community and customer standpoint, this transaction will be very beneficial. National Bank of Ohios customers will have access to a broader array of products and services and we will have a significantly larger lending limit, but with the customer service of a community bank. Robertson added National Bank of Ohio has done an excellent job building the bank to its current position, and we want to continue the positive momentum. This is an excellent strategic fit for Croghan Colonial Bank. Pursuant to the transaction, Croghan has agreed to appoint two directors from the Indebancorp board of directors to serve on the boards of both Croghan Bancshares Inc. and Croghan Colonial Bank. Croghan is being advised by Sterne Agee & Leach, Inc. and Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP. Indebancorp is being advised by Austin Associates, LLC and Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP. Both banks urge investors and shareholders of Croghan and Indebancorp to read the prospectus and joint proxy statement and other documents filed with the SEC, including any amendments and other documents also filed with the SEC. Shareholders of Croghan and Indebancorp in particular should read carefully the joint proxy statement before making a decision concerning the merger. Investors and shareholders will be able to obtain a free copy of the Registration Statement, including the prospectus and joint proxy statement, free of charge, when filed, at the SECs website at www.sec.gov. Copies of all of these documents will also be available free of charge by contacting the Secretary of Croghan at 323 Croghan Street, Fremont, Ohio 43420, phone 419-332-7301.

Walk to Remember children

The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County (TCF) is joining with dozens of chapters and thousands of bereaved across the country this summer in a one-mile Walk to Remember their children, brothers and sisters, grandchildren, and other family members who have died. The Ottawa County Walk will be held Sunday, July 7, at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton. As the worlds largest self-help bereavement organization, The Compassionate Friends offers friendship, understanding, and hope to families that have experienced the death of a child at any age from any cause. There are more than 650 chapters in the United States. The local walk is being held in conjunction with The Compassionate Friends National Conference Walk to Remember in Boston, MA, where as many as 1,500 are expected to walk July 7th. Locally, walk coordinators are expecting more than 150 participants to meet at Lakeview Park. The walk begins promptly at 1 p.m. with registration beginning at noon. Following the walk, participants will join for a potluck and short memorial service. Whether someone walks one mile or a couple hundred feet is not important, says chapter leader Roseann Hickman, What is important is that we have taken this time to join with family and friends who care that an important person, a child, is missing from our lives. We are joining with bereaved families and friends walking in unity in states across our country to remember all children who died too soon, no matter their age or cause of death. Registration is required for the event and a registration form can be received by contacting Roseann Hickman at 419-308-4690 or you can pick up the form at Perfect Color, 90 N. Madison Street, Port Clinton. Cost of registration is $10 and walkers will be given a walk bib. Walkers who pre-register will be given a tshirt also. The chapter is accepting pledges from the community, as well as walkers, to help support outreach and chapter activities. Anyone wishing to make a pledge or who would like additional information about the walk or The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County may call Roseann Hickman at 419-308-4690 For more information about the national organization and locations of its chapters nationwide, call 877-9690010 or visit TCFs national website at www.compassionatefriends.org. The Compassionate Friends has a presence in at least 30 countries worldwide.

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary and The Moose Club Ladies Auxiliary for their donation to the Edgewood Manor National Nursing Home Week celebrations.Without their kind support the week would not have been so successful! Thank you, again, to these organizations for their generosity. Denice Day, Executive Director

Whos at risk for caregiver distress?

Studies increasingly point to caregiving as a leading stressor for families. In fact, one U.S. study revealed that more than half (52.8%) of those caring for individuals with diseases including cancer or Alzheimers had scores indicating depression. In response to this growing issue, the local Home Instead Senior Care office has launched a public awareness campaign, Family Caregiver Stress Relief, at FamilyCaregiverStressRelief.com, to help family caregivers determine if they are at risk for distress and to minimize problems before they escalate. Included in the program are two new tools: The Are You a Caregiver Quiz, which is designed to help a family caregiver self-identify and recognize the role of a caregiver, and the Family Caregiver Distress Assessment, adapted for the Home Instead Senior Care network by Dr. Peter Vitaliano of the University of Washington. The assessment allows caregivers to determine their risk for distress and resulting emotional and physical issues, including depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. So many spouses and adult children are unaware of their potential risk of caregiver distress because they dont see themselves as caregivers, said Enedelia Marez, general manager of the local Home Instead Senior Care office. Approximately 74 percent of caregivers who hide their feelings report fatigue, 53 percent report difficulty sleeping, 37 percent report depression, and 30 percent weight gain or loss. Research shows that certain characteristics make family caregivers more vulnerable to caregiver distress, the top being: Gender: Women report more psychological distress than men (however, male caregivers have more negative physiological responses to caregiving, including higher blood sugar and insulin levels, poorer cholesterol and immune function, and obesity). Reluctance to ask for help: Caregivers who wont ask for help are setting themselves up for the kind of exhaustion that can lead to distress. Chronic Illness: Caregivers who are already sick or have existing medical conditions, such as coronary disease, hypertension and cancer, are more vulnerable to additional negative health effects resulting from caregiver stress. Its important for caregivers to understand that stress can impact ones ability to care. If they dont care for themselves, they may put their senior loved ones at risk., said Marez. Women in Conservation SNOW ANGELS IN JUNE

Women of different ages and experience levels joined Ottawa Soil & Water Conservation District at the Oak Harbor Conservation Club, Wednesday, June 19, for the third session of the Women in Conservation series. This session specialized in giving women an opportunity to fire handguns and to shoot archery. Before the activities began, Bob Rogers from the Catawba Sporting Goods store gave a safety talk on how to properly handle a firearm in order to prevent misfire and injury. Throughout the event, the women were more thoroughly instructed on techniques by certified professional gun-

men and archers. The women also had the pleasure to listen to Jacob Wukie, an Olympic archer won a silver medal in London, tell his story of making it to the Olympics and watched him shoot a bullseye from 70 yards. Many of the women in attendance had never participated in either type of recreation before the session, and afterwards all of them agreed that they felt more confident and comfortable with handling guns and found both sports to be enjoyable. The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District would like to thank the Oak Harbor Conservation Club and all the volunteers for making this event possible.

A variety of classic, vintage and collector cars and trucks opened Lakeside Chautauquas 140th season at the 8th Annual Classic Car Show Saturday afternoon on the Hotel Lakeside lawn. Lakeside Chautauqua also dedicated their new Splash Park that has transformed the east waterfront into a recreational water play destination. The new childrens splash park includes a zero depth entry pool, bench seating for parents and grandparents and a fence for safety. A stateof-the-art splash pad has also been incorporated. The splash pad is an area designed for water play and interaction that has no standing water. Water-erupting turtles, frogs and numerous other creatures encourage interactive play with groups of children while smaller sprays encourage younger children to experience water in a safe and fun environment.

Truth Ministries has been preparing a free community meal at its church on State Road across from the airport on Wednesday nights for several years. This summer the church has decided to take its free meal to the community. The meal will be served every Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. in the shelter house of Port Clintons Lakeview Park, across from the city beach, rain or shine. This past week the church kicked off its program with a picnic menu and many people visited the park to enjoy fellowship and a free meal. The menu will change weekly and feature special tasty delights prepared by church members and volunteers. Pastor Hild stated, We had a great time serving the local community. We look forward to meeting many new people in

the coming weeks throughout the summer and everyone is welcome to attend. The Church of Truth Ministries is a non denominational independent church located on State Road in Gypsum. In addition to the community meal, the church has a food pantry, a resale shop, open gym basketball and volleyball in the fall and winter months and other community based programs throughout the week. There is also a restaurant that is open Monday through Saturday. Church worship services are held at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday. The service features life application sermons, an inspiring song and worship time and a childrens ministry. For further information contact Pastor Brian Hild at 419-656-0412.

Fourth of July on Put-in-Bay

Perrys Victory to host Masonic Centennial cornerstone laying reenactment, 122nd Army Concert Band performance and more on July 4th This 4th of July will be full of activity at Perrys Victory and International Peace Memorial as annual patriotic activities are joined with the Parks centennial celebration. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the building of the International Peace Memorial, an historic national monument and local treasure. In 1913, 5,000 Masons from nine states and Canada formed a procession and marched to the site of Perrys Victory and International Peace Memorial to witness the laying of the monuments cornerstone. This procession and laying of the stone will be re-enacted at the monument this 4th of July, in honor of the structures centennial anniversary. The procession will be preceded by a grand parade beginning at 2 p.m., progressing through downtown Put-inBay to the memorial. The parade will include a number of participants from near and far, and will be led by Put-inBays traditional antique car parade and local American legion chapter representatives. The parade will conclude at the Memorial itself, shortly before the beginning of the 3 p.m. Cornerstone Ceremony. Joining both the parade and ceremony will be the 122nd Army Concert Band, who will also provide a free public concert at the Perrys Victory Visitor Center at 7:30 p.m. On the 4th, Perrys Victory will also be hosting the biennial naturalization ceremony for 10 area residents who will be taking the oath of new citizenship. The patriotic scope of this years ceremony will be even greater than usual, as the naturalization will be accompanied by a Delayed Enlistment Program in which 200 men and woman from three branches of the military will be taking their oath of service. The naturalization ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on the memorial lower plaza and will be followed immediately by the delayed enlistment. The patriotic festivities on the day will conclude with a public fireworks display over the bay at dusk. The fireworks are provided by the Put-in-Bay Business Owners and Friends of the Bay. Please be aware that parking is limited and alcoholic beverages are not permitted on park grounds. For more information on any of these events, call Perrys Victory and International Peace Memorial at 419-285-2184 or visit www.nps.gov/pevi.

HEALING from COVER

flowerbeds, and mulch cloth rather than an impermeable material like plastic, which overheats the plants and prevents water from filtering down through the soil. The next suggestion from Simpson was a rain barrel could be used to water flowerbeds. They come in all sizes and materials. Cindy was interested to learn more about a ceramic rain barrel that would complement their landscaping. Simpson also encouraged the use of native plants that are the best at holding soil and requiring little care. Butterfly bushes and other plants that attract butterflies and honeybees also enhance the environment.

Win a rain barrel

To encourage homeowners to think about the valuable resource of Lake Erie, OSWCD today announces a contest for the month of July. Homeowners that submit plans for implementing improvements in environmental stewardship with their lawn care will qualify to win a rain barrel. Submit photos and ideas to www.ottawaswcd.com, or 419-898-1595 or mike.libben@ottawaswcd.com.

Other

Trees

Both properties have several older trees of species that are native to the area. Simpson emphasized that trees, especially those more native to the area, hold moisture and prevent erosion and keep the soil, lawn and homes cooler. Miniers have a mature bald cypress and a double-trunked basswood that are close to the waterfront. Kellners transplanted a bald cypress seedling from the Miniers tree that is thriving, and also planted a hybrid maple as a memorial to Katies mother. The trees all hold special meaning for the homeowners, in addition to their aesthetic and environmental benefits. Tree seedlings are available at the OSWCD office. Simpson advised to plan ahead when planting trees, whether you want one that grows more quickly or one that will be for the grandchildren.

The Kellners asked advice for building a deck in an environmentally responsible way. Libben suggested using deck material that is the more porous, the better, and plan ahead for the runoff. Peer pressure is powerful. See who (in your neighborhood) can use the most native plants, water the least, and keep their lawn mowed at the healthiest height, suggested Simpson. Libben and Simpson offered other simple ways to help heal the lake without leaving your yard: When filling your lawnmower, do so on the grass rather than on the driveway. According to Simpson, One drop of oil can pollute 32 gallons of water. Keep lawn clippings off the driveway and street. When you wash your car, do so on the grass. The Miniers and Kellners were appreciative for all the suggestions from Libbner and Simpson. Katie was glad to hear we werent doing anything that bad. OSWCD consults are available to homeowners. Many of the practices that help the environment also save money and work. Less watering, less fertilizer and less weeding all make for more time to enjoy a healthier Lake Erie. This article is part of The Beacons ongoing series on the Healing of Lake Erie.

The banks

Going Beyond the expected for you and your Automobile.

Call us today to see how Pekin Insurance can make a difference for you.

Both properties have steep banks down to the lake. Miniers have all-natural vegetation and Kellners have a less steep and more groomed bank. Both have plants to hold the soil and filter runoff. Libben emphasized that if using an herbicide, especially on the banks, to use selective spraying. Put it right on the weeds.

Catawba Island Brewing Company opening June 26

COASTLINES

The Beacon Huron Hometown News

(Upper Left) Brewer Mike Roder with the brewhouse (Lower Left) Drew Gunderson in the beer garden BY DONNA LUEKE Catawba Island Brewing Company opened at 2330 East Harbor Road, Port Clinton, on June 26. Life-long Catawba residents Mike Roder and Cindy and Shad Gunderson bring to Port Clinton the areas only microbrewery and tasting room. Brewers are Shad Gunderson and Mike Roder. Cindy and Shads son Drew is also helping the family-run business while he is on break from his studies at Ohio University. Drew, 19, who has been brewing with his dad since he was three, is putting together some of the automated systems. The pilot system is now brewing the CIB featured beers. It also will allow us to play around with and try new beers, says Roder, in 55 gallon batches rather than (the big tanks) 400 gallons. Making beer at CIB Grain goes into the grinder, then by conveyor to the top of the kettle, where it is mixed with grains and hot water in the 15-barrell brewhouse. The wort is then boiled for 60-90 minutes and hops are added. Husks and hops are then strained out and the wort is chilled. The wort is pumped into insulated unitanks, where it ferments at 68-60 degrees for up to two weeks. The beer then settles and clears in the bright tank, where it is further chilled for 24 hours. Finally the beer is moved to the kegs for up to 15 days and/or to wooden barrels where it aged for up to a year. The entire brewing process from grain to keg can take as little as eight days, or as long as a year. The Beers The tasting room currently features six brews on tap: McFadden Red Ale, Backer Forward Brown Ale, WhiteCap Wit, Seiche Scottish Ale, Test Fire Tripel, Couple Three Hops IPA and Pebble Beach Porter. The number of brews on tap will increase to 12 within a month, according to Roder. The regular brews and other specialty brews will be available by the pint or in growlers (a jug for take-out draft beer that can hold carbonation for a week or more). CIB is the first in Ohio to use the high-end stainless steel Bruler growlers. Hour & Features Catawba Island Brewing Company (CIB) will be open year round, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 10 p.m., Fridays from 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays from noon to midnight, and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. High-tech stainless steel is a theme that carries through from the brewing room to the chairs to the growlers, warmed by wood tables and leather sofas. For a limited time CIB is offering a few remaining Founders Club memberships, whose benefits include personal mugs and

A dark nutty brown ale with light chocolate notes covering the alcohol. She gets a smoky bitterness as she warms up in your mouth followed by caramel flavors that lead to a smooth creamy finish. Puter in Reverse and Backer Forward. A dedication to a great friend who was taken far too soon. McFadden Red Ale is West Coast Red Ale that utilizes British Ale yeast to throw your palate for a loop. The malts and hops battle for your attention the second this beer hits your lips and it is up to you to decide who comes out on top. A Hop forward IPA that will send your imagination floating on an inner tube in the middle of Lake Erie. At 6.4% ABV this is a beer that can be enjoyed all day. Utilizing a mixture of American and British malts and a couple three kinds of hops we have brought forward a bright piney/ citrusy flavor that is unmatched on a nice sunny Catawba afternoon.

growlers, first access to new tastings and special discounts. Live music will be regularly featured, acoustical entertainment that will maintain the living room-type atmosphere. We are leaning toward original music, said Cindy, giving them the opportunity to be as crafty as we are. On Saturday, June 29, the original band Ethan and the Imaginary Friends will be playing. On June 30, Mike Risner, musician. On July 4, Athens Wheeler Trio. x Complimentary snacks of popcorn, pretzels and snack mix are served, in classic tasting room tradition, and customers will also be able to bring their own food to the tasting room or the adjacent outdoor beer garden. Food trucks from all around Ohio will provide a rotating variety of unique food items. Pigaliscious food truck will be there on July 4. Non-alcoholic beverages include, according to Cindy, French press coffee that is roasted in Ohio and Sub Rosa Teas specially blended for CIB. Its All About the Beer Our focus is on making award-winning craft beers, emphasized Shad, and staying true to the mission of Catawba Island Brewing Company to honor and fulfill the science and the art of craft brewing. Staying true to their mission, CIB will be one of the sponsors at Ohio Brew Week in Athens this weekend. Ohio Brew Week is the nations first week-long beer event. Captain Juls Fishing Report

Fishing remains good in the Western Basin

June 21st was the first day of summer, and the temperatures are rising. It was a cooler than normal spring here in the Port Clinton area, but it feels like that is behind us now. As the water temperatures rise and get into the 70s the big walleye are starting to move to the deeper/cooler waters to the east. As of last week the water temperature in this area was 66-69 degrees off shore. At this time there are still plenty of big fish to be found in the Western Basin. From west of the islands, in and around Niagara Reef, C Can, to the northeast up to the red buoy North of North Bass is still producing great catches with several Fish Ohios in the bunch. Those with Canadian licenses are having much success on both sides of Pelee Island as well. If you dont have a Canadian license, you can fish the Canadian line between North Bass and Middle Island by either trolling or drift casting crawler harnesses or trolling with spoons and crankbaits for nice sized walleye. The further east you travel the bigger the fish will get. The trick to catching those fish is having a great sonar and mapping system on your boat, because there is really no structure out there per se, and finding that pod of active fish can be time consuming and difficult without them. Once you find them, look at your electronics and determine the depth where they are suspended. Then determine how much line you need out to put your baits in the zone. The zone, as we call it, is just above where you see the fish swimming. Walleye will move up in the water column to chase your lure, but usually will not see it if it is below them, and thats just a matter of eye placement on their heads. As you catch fish, keep track of what baits they hit on and at what depth. Then duplicate it. You should start to put more walleye in the boat at a faster pace. Captain Juls can be contacted by email at rngrgal@gmail. com, or by phone at 419-835-7347. Her website address is www.julswalleyefishingadventures.com. At left: Denny Ellerbrock

Cedar Point & Lake Erie Railroad celebrates 50th anniversary

Cedar Point hosted a special ceremony on Saturday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cedar Point & Lake Erie Railroad. Cedar Point Vice President and General Manager John Hildebrandt led the ceremony, joined by everyones favorite beagle, Snoopy, and the Osburn family of Columbus, who were chosen from the crowd to be the guest conductors. The CP & LE Railroad was the dream of one of the parks previous owners, George Roose, and in 1963 that dream became a reality. Today, Cedar Point owns five steam-powered engines and is one of the few amusement parks in the world that still uses real coal-fired steam engines. To commemorate this milestone in Cedar Point history throughout the 2013 season, the park will randomly select a guest conductor each day. Guest conductors will have the honor of ringing the bell as the train departs the station, and theyll receive a special conductor hat and pin to remember their day.

Capturing the Mississippi

BY MADELYN HILLE

June 17

We have just completed our 10th day on the river and are feeling great. Our daily routine is to wake up at 6:30 and get on the water by 8 a.m. We try to complete roughly 30 miles per day and average about 5 m.p.h., so we spend about 6-9 hours on the water each day. Once were done for the day we are usually exhausted. Until yesterday, towns in northern Minnesota on the river were each about 5 days apart. Now, though, they are getting closer and we couldnt be happier. While camping we eat ramen noodles, dehydrated mashed potatoes, soup, and basically anything that you

cheeseburger and a pint of beer. We have had such a great time so far. Not being able to have a burger, a beer, a shower, a toilet, or water makes every time we do a precious moment. I think thats what the theme of our trip is so far-appreciation. Appreciation for nature, family, a bed, each other, etc. Madelyn

just need to add water to. We relish the opportunity for a stop in a town, where, God willing, were able to grab a

days. We finished some laundry, caught up on House Hunters, got some supplies, planned out our route for the upcoming days, and were about 400 miles in. Weve been having an amazing time exploring Minnesota, a state Id never been to before. Youve got to love Midwestern hospitality which is even greater here up north. A 38 mile day is on the agenda for tomorrow and well be heading into the country again, so so-long for now. Ill update again when possible. Madelyn Editors note: Madelyn Hille, 23, from Elmore, a Woodmore graduate, is canoeing the length of the Mississippi River with her partner Adam Hoffmeister, 25.They have graciously agreed to take The Beacons readers along on their 2500 mile trip, sending us photos and reports as internet access allows. To follow along or send messages of encouragement, connect to Capturing the Mississippi on facebook.

Rick Dominick named PCHS Athletic Director

Port Clinton High School has announced Rick Dominick will be the new Athletic Director and has already started working on the 2013-14 school year. Mr. Dominick has been with the district since 1996 as a Business Teacher, Guidance Counselor, and Coach. He replaces former Athletic Director, Carey Clum, who retired in earlier in June. PCHS Principal Mr. Gary Steyer said, Im excited about Rick Dominick taking over as Athletic Director for Port Clinton High School. Ricks knowledge of the SBC as well as his passion for high school sports will make him a natural fit for the position. Our athletes and our coaches are fortunate to have Rick as their Athletic Director. Mr. Dominick looks forward to his new role in PCHS Athletics and said he believes it is a natural evolution to oversee the athletic programs. At PCHS he has had experience running various programs as both an assistant and a head coach. As a coach, Dominick has led the Redskin Boys Golf Team to several SBC championships. One of his main goals is to continue and improve the partnership with the community and High School Athletics. He said, We know they benefit each other, both what Redskin Athletics does for the community and equally important how the community support effects student athletes. During the state boys basketball tournament run a few years ago we all experienced it firsthand. The athletes are impacted when they see that people care and feed off of that support.

Following the race, racers will head back to the Jefferson Street Pavilion for refreshments and awards. Entry fees are $20 per racer for those who pre-register by July 1st and $25 thereafter or on race day. All participants registered by July 1st will also receive a T-shirt. Edgewood Manor announces 5 star rating

Legal Lines

Five year crystal ball

Maybe it has something to do with the weather, but lately one of the most common questions by new clients is how to protect major assets from being liquidated to cover nursing home expense. Many years ago, I was advised by the State of Ohio that it was malpractice not to advise clients on how to protect assets LEGALLY. It is not my job to pass moral judgment but to give the facts and apply the law. Medicaid is a State and Federal plan to provide funds to pay for nursing home and related expense. There are strict rules to determine who may qualify. Bottom line, title to an asset must be transferred out of the legal ownership and control of a person for a period exceeding five years. Who knows what is in store for the next five years? What a gamble, but the payoff is the protection of the farm, the family business, the lake property or those heirlooms held by the family for many generations. I will not proceed on a plan unless I feel comfortable that it is the genuine goal to preserve assets held by several generations or to protect the assets for generations in the future. I must be convinced that this is the best plan of action for all parties concerned and it is not just done for the protection of cash for kids. There is another major question: will the current owner be able to sleep at night? Can he or she handle the loss of control? Is there a fear that their assets may be misused by the next generation? I need to know that all of the parties concerned are on the same page and that the welfare of the parent is foremost and will be protected. Space does not allow the explanation on the actual procedure as it is a complicated process. We must understand the income tax consequence and all of the potential hazards that may occur. It is to be remembered that after the transfers, the individual may not apply for Medicaid for a minimum of five years. That takes lots of planning and luck. In the event that a person requires nursing home care during this period, the care must be paid with private third party funds until the legal time has passed. We may prepare and complete a detailed transfer plan and the parent will die within the five year period or the individual will never require nursing home care. If either event occurs, the plan has in place a distribution procedure to distribute the protected asset to the next generation regardless of a Medicaid application. An irrevocable trust is the basic tool but other alternatives can accomplish this goal. The purpose of this article is to make people aware that steps can be taken to protect assets. This action needs to be done when a person is in good health with longevity sufficient to perfect the plan. It takes planning, time and a crystal ball into the future. Federation of Womens Clubs convention in Lakeside

The 119th annual convention of the Lakeside Federation of Womens Clubs will be held July 10 in Lakeside. The federation is made up of womens clubs located in northwest Ohio. Women from this area have been meeting annually since 1894 to hear speakers of interest and to exchange information. President Joyce Keaton of the Attica Literary Club has chosen Friends and Memories for the 2013 convention theme. Since this will be the last convention for this organization, attendees can look forward to being with friends and sharing many fond memories. The meeting will begin at Green Gables, historic home of the Lakeside Womens Club. The morning program will feature Raeline Hlaverty from Jeromesville, who will portray Fannie Crosby, the well-known Christian hymn writer. Luncheon will be served at the Lakeside United Methodist Church. The afternoon speaker will be Raelene Phillips from Fostoria who is known as the Pineapple Lady. She is the author of eight books, all describing a simpler time when extending hospitality was a way of life. Attendees will leave the program knowing why the pineapple became a symbol of hospitality. Clubs in this area who are participants include the Port Clinton Eighty-Eight Circle, Port Clinton Literary and Social Club, Lakeside Noonday Club, Lakeside Study Club, Lakeside Literature Club and Lakeside Womens Club. The convention is open to any interested women. For information and registration, call 740-504-0865 by June 29.
