11.2 Floating and Sinking Define Density. Whats the formula for density.

What explains why an object floats/sinks Density- a substances mass per unit volume Density= Mass/volume By comparing densities, you can predict whether an object will float or sink in a fluid Changing density can explain why an object floats or sinks o Ex. Water freezing into ice, floats Density of a submarine increases when water fill its flotation tanks Buoyant force- when water and other fluids exert an upward force that acts on a submerged object The buoyant force acts in the direction opposite to the force of gravity The weight of a submerged object is a downward on the object; if its greater than the buoyant force a net force acts downward on the object (it sinks) o If the weight of an object is equal to the buoyant force no net force acts on the object (wont sink) o If the weight is equal to the buoyant force also has no net force acting on it A submerged object displaces or takes the place of a volume of fluid equal to its own volume Archimedes principle- states that the buoyant force acting on a submerged object is equal to the weight of the volume of fluid displaced by the object o Ex: your body displaces 50L of water in a swimming pool, the buoyant force on you will be equal to the weight of the 50L of water, or about 500N Submarines can dive and float b/c the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the displaced fluid, the buoyant force on the submerged submarine stays the same o Changing the water level changed the weight, allowing it to dive and float A balloon filled with air is denser than the surrounding air because the air inside it is under pressure The denser air makes it fall to the ground If the air inside the balloon is heated it become less dense and the balloon rises

Define buoyant force.

What happens when the weight of an object is greater than the buoyant force?

What does a submerged object do? Whats Archimedes principle? Give an ex.

Why can submarines dive?

What is a balloon filled with air? What does the dense air do?

What will the buoyant force do? What does a large object do?

Why dont ships sink?

Ships: o Since the buoyant force equals the weight of the displaced fluid, the buoyant force will increase if more fluid is displaced o A large object displaces more fluid than a small object o A greater buoyant force acts on the larger object even if the large object has the same weight as the small object o Ships dont sink because buoyant force is equal to the weight of displaced water
