Welcome to the Powderhorn Art Fair!

Welcome . . .
Each summer white tents dot the landscape around Powderhorn Park bringing individuals from all over the country together to enjoy an abundance of creativity and skill that flows through the artists participating in the Powderhorn Art Fair. The park, the lake, the surrounding community, and event coordinators and volunteers make this a fantastic event; however, the real beauty of the Powderhorn Art Fair is that the events impact is felt throughout the year and not just on event days. Proceeds from the Art Fair help fund park programs such as theatre arts, computer lab, teen center, music recording studio, the pottery studio and team sports - giving neighborhood residents of all ages a safe environment in which to play, learn and grow. As you enjoy this years Fair, please take a moment to reflect on your importance to Powderhorn Park and our communitiy. We appreciate you taking time to experience the uniqueness of the Powderhorn Park neighborhood and hope you will visit us regularly.

About the Cover

By the Lake was created by African-American artist Christopher E. Harrison and is the theme art for the 2009 Powderhorn Art Fair. His work consists of chalks, inks, paints and other media on paper to create magical landscapes and abstract art pieces. Says Harrison, My visions are inspired by the earth, sea and sky. My work, which I have coined the term Proto biomorphism features paintings with amoeba-like shapes with densely textured backgrounds. Proto biomorphisms are a common ancestor of a set of

In Memoriam Patrick Turner

Patrick Turner (1953-2008) Mixed Media Artist & Musician Milwaukee, Wisconsin
It is with great sadness that this years Powderhorn Art Fair will not have the bright presence and consciousness raising art of Patrick Turner. Patrick exhibited his work and won awards for many years at the Powderhorn Art Fair.He will be greatly missed, along with his creativity, wry jokes and open personality. The art of collage can be approached with the same challenges as in relationships. There are many parallels that are very similar in determining, for all intended purposes, what the final outcome should be. There will always be the question of where do you draw the line and should that line be crossed. This is similar to the stage of collage or the actual process, where you cut out, tear, burn or use any of the unique imaginative collage techniques that can be combined together. In collage, I can contain the lyrical expressions that for the most part magnify what is to be or not to be. Patrick Turner, January 2008 ABEA website http://abeapresents.blogspot.com The Art Guild in Milwaukee www.theartguild.com webpage & video tribute We have created a webpage and memory section honoring Patrick www.powderhornartfair.org Please go to our website and share your memories of Patrick Sincerely, Powderhorn Art Fair Staff and Volunteers

2008 Art Fair Awards

Each year four top awards and ten invitational awards are given to Main Exhibitors as well as Community Showcase and Group Exhibitor awards. All artists are eligible for The Spirit of Powderhorn award. A panel of three judges of varying art backgrounds (one of whom is a Powderhorn Park Neighborhood resident) is chosen by the Art Fair Committee to select the Main Exhibitor award winners. One judge is chosen by the Community Showcase Committee to select the Spirit of Powderhorn award winner (the artist whose work best represents the unique qualities found in the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood), and Best of for the Community Showcase and Group Exhibitors.

Tim Byrns is a wood sculptor living in Duluth, MN. His preferred medium is local hardwood from the Great Lakes Region. Often, the themes of Tims work are communicated through both the character of the raw material, and the suggested movement of the sculpted form. In each piece, he strives to preserve the spirit of the wood, while conveying a renewed sense of movement and life.

Second Place
Margaret Dittrich
Jewelry MN Booth 32

Margaret Dittrich is a metalsmith living in St. Paul, MN. All of her jewelry is hand-fabricated sterling silver and gold often combining the two. She prefers simple, clean lines. Stones are frequently central to a piece and run the gamut from pebbles and meteorites to pearls.

Third Place
Shawn Wolter
Mixed Media IA Booth 107 Shawn Wolter currently resides in Urbandale, IA. His work is cunningly crafted 2D Mixed Media utilizing such things as airbrush, wood stains, acrylic paints, glues, molding pastes, spray paints, string, collaged canvas and paper pieces over stretched canvas and masonite board.

Honorable Mention
Ron Byers
Photography WI Booth 47 From the beginning, my passion for photography has been more of a process of inner exploration. The images can be metaphorical stepping stones to rich, personal associations, vehicles to carry the viewer into the realm of the surreal. The art of photography is in the seeing; the craft is rendering what has been seen into the fullness of its spirit. A photograph to me can be not only a literal window to the world but also a mirror to an inner landscape. Here, the viewers must bring something of themselves to fully activate the poetic image.

I always try to bring forward the natural beauty of the wood. I really do enjoy the entire process of wood working and look forward to each new year and the challenge of doing art fairs

HELP NOW!
We all expect blood to be there for us, but barely a fraction of those who can give do. Yet sooner or later, virtually all of us will face a time of great vulnerability in which we will need blood. And that time is all too often unexpected. From its beginning, the American Red Cross has formed a community of service, of generous, strong and decent people bound by beliefs beyond themselves. The honor, spirit and resources of the American people comes forth with neighbors helping neighbors in need - during earthquakes, floods, fires, storms - and also for the deeply personal and often quiet disasters that require a gift of blood. A Thank You from the Powderhorn Park Director:

Its that time of year again when the greatest trio of art fairs is in the city of Minneapolis. Participants can get free bus rides to all three fairs but I have to say its great to see all the new faces right here at Powderhorn Park. Im using this article as an opportunity to personally thank everyone for taking part in the 2009 Powderhorn Art Fair. You are the people that help insure this park remains a special place all year long, not just the two days in August when artists from the community and around the country encircle the lake to exhibit their artwork. This weekend will ensure that not one child in this neighborhood will be turned away from joining a sports team or participating in a creative activity. All proceeds from the Art Fair make a huge impact on the kids and community that live around this magnificent park. This year alone Art Fair funding impacted programs like youth and adult ceramics with new electric wheels, the Ideawerks Sound Studio program, sports teams year round, and the Outdoor Monday Movies in the park happening the entire month of August. As we enter out last month of summer at the park the kids have enjoyed their time off participating in theater and youth farm camps, fishing, camping and golf classes. Older youth have been canoeing, attending teen nights, going on trips to Valley Fair, or participating in our teen job program. Lets not forget to mention recording the next hot hook in Powderhorn Parks very own recording studio. From the dog walker, to the nose guard, and the desk staff to the district manager, we all extend a giant thank you and look forward to having you back again next year. I would like to personally thank each one of you for attending or exhibiting at the Powderhorn Art Fair this year. Sincerely, Powderhorn Park Center Director
