We use Simple Past to talk about actions in the past.

For Example :

Spelling rules in Simple past Tense

Spelling rules

Description

Add (ed) or (d) to most verbs

in past

Use = used talk = talked

Verb ends in Consonant + y

Change ( y ) to ( i ) and add ed

study = studied
apply = applied

Verb ends in Vowel + w, x or

y
(vowels = a, i, u, o, e)

Only add (ed) fix = fixed

play = played
follow = followed

One syllable verb ends in

consonant after vowel

Double the consonant and add (ed)

stop = stopped
shop = shopped

Making Negative Sentences in Simple Past Tense

We use (did not RU didQW) in negative sentences:

Examples:

(1) He slept late yesterday. (affirmative Sentence)

He did not sleep late yesterday. (Negative Sentence)

(2) I watched TV last night. (affirmative Sentence)

I did not watch TV last night. (Negative Sentence)

Note: we should rewrite the verb in base form (present) in case

of negative sentences.

We use Did with Simple Past.
