Rob Unglenieks Turn it off? But seriously, what frequency range is your issue? Is it an airborne or structureborne issue or both? There is plenty of technical papers at SAE and textbooks that can get you going in the right direction.

rajshekhar u The noise induced by the engine is very difficult to control in troubleshooting point of view. Because the interior noise could be checked in pilot test stage and troubleshooting is one of main activities of this stage. The general way of doing troubleshooting to control the engine noise is the practical test method. It means the worker should repeat to assemble the engine and do measurement by all through the engine condition. There could be many causes to occur the unpleasant noise in the automotive. Major noise source of the automotive is the engine, and it is very difficult to reduce the noise, because it has strong relation with the engine power. Hard-to-handle and timeconsuming to work could be another obstacles to reduce the noise from engine, as a

Varun K Sharma actually i have to reduce noise of vehicle that is basically a tractor of 55 hp 4 WD , and as you know engine noise is difficult to reduce so can you please suggest me some other good way to reduce noise level.....

rajshekhar u Source Path Contribution In todays competitive automotive industry, it is crucial to quickly and accurately evaluate noise and vibration perceived by vehicle occupants. Today, based on customers expectations, automotive engineers are taking NVH investigations from concept to actual development. In partnership with leading automotive companies on Source Path Contribution (SPC) technologies, and putting emphasis on usability, data management, and Source Path Receiver model management, Brel & Kjr has come up with an advanced Source Path Contribution solution. http://www.bksv.com/products/pulseanalyzerplatform/pulsesolutionsoverview/acousticappli cations/sourcepathcontribution.aspx

Koen De Langhe These days, with modern powertrains, there are sources of different kind. As to predict accurately the powertrain noise, it is important to properly quantify these sources. This can happen both on a Test basis or on a Simulation basis. Our company LMS has both offerings. For myself, my specialty is related to simulation software for engine noise. As far as the sources are concerned: - mechanical sources (valve, crank, piston slab) ==> for which one typically uses a Multibody simulation process or 1D approach to obtain the forces on the bearings of the engine block, - combustion noise ==> today, pressure fluctuations tends to be very peaky give rise to shorter impact type of noise, especially due to higher performant injectors - injector tick noise ==> impact of injector needle gives a impact type of noise - turbocharger noise ==> high frequency wine besides sources a good FEM structural model is required : correlated and updated to match experiments ! Today, these noise sources can be simulated to quite good accuracy in case both

sources and models (structural FEM model of the engine) are well predicted. For these calculations, 3dB is seen as a good accuracy. www.lmsintl.com/acoustics

Greg Locock Your best bet is to get an experienced NVH engineer to sit in the vehicle and give you a prioritised list of problems. That could save you many weeks or months of pointless activity.

However, if you want to do it another way one old favourite is the disconnect test progressively remove every transmission path from the engine to the body. Transfer path analysis is an alternative to a disconnect test, but it isn't as much fun.

Mostafa Haghroosta I had similar situation before and all comments are professional. the most important point is to define the character of sound and which one is more annoying because the engine noise is a combination of engine itself and other relevant systems. in what situation of running you encounter with annoying noise. is it in an exact RPM or whenever you make a tip-in? you need to scan your engine. However, checking every system as Greg mentioned. In my experience the radiation of noise from Oil-Pan was terrible. we encapsulated Oil-Pan and repeated test it was effectful. in some FEV paper the proportion of radiation noise from Oil-Pan is considerable and you need to use aluminium die casting oil-pan plus considering its fragile quality.you also need to study the crank shaft modal test mostly torsional ones and the clearance of bearing in crankshaft. all of these are for annoying emitted noise in tip-in situation in addition to study airflow in air-intake system. just try to recognise the annoying noise.Surely too much and interesting activities you are going to do, good luck.

create better sound quality and is the last treatment. first of all we need to focus on source and path then reciever. it is like using a headphone or ear protector for passengers ;-).

Juan P. Leiva Are you trying to design a new engine? If that is the case: Do you have a finite element model of the engine? If so, you can try to use optimization. There are many sources of sound. Some of them can be reduced designing the surface of the engine. We have some papers showing how to reduce noise of transmissions and we have used same ideas for engine blocks. If you are interested, I can point to you to those papers.
