Department of Communication Studies

To Whom it May Concern: I am writing to refer Jared Miller for your organization. He was a student of mine during the 2012-2013 school year and based on his work ethic, positive attitude toward learning, and genuinely pleasant disposition, I feel more than able to recommend him. In both the courses Jared took from me over the course of the school year, he illustrated a strong work ethic and a genuine desire to learn. In a generation where many students wait until the last minute to work on assignments, Jared was a breath of fresh air, coming to chat with me in my office long before due dates to ask questions along the way. He also took my constructive criticism seriously and graciously, rather than as an attack on his as a person, using it to improve his work over the course of the year. In my fall Intercultural Communication class, Jared illustrated daily that he was dedicated to understanding the material and critically thinking and questioning societys and his own understanding of other cultures, a main component of the course. He often participated during class discussion, engaged in group work with his fellow classmates, and consistently scored above average on his individual and group assignments, highlighting not only his work ethic, but also his ability to comprehend the reading material. In my senior seminar course which requires students to complete a semester-long project, Jared continued to ask thoughtful questions, strived to improve his writing, and produced a final study that illustrated his ability to use what he learned in class in the real world. The company he worked with for this project were not only thrilled with his work, but asked him to come back and continue after the semester was over. Finally, Jared is simply pleasant to be around. He always has a smile on his face and speaks to others with respect, and has a sense of humor. The end of all our meetings concluded with a thank you from him and he illustrated a true appreciation for the opportunity to engage with his professors as well as in the classroom. Jareds positive attitude toward learning and critical thinking makes him a superb candidate. I am happy to answer any further questions as the selection process proceeds. I certainly hope this letter has adequately highlighted his excellent disposition. I am certain he would be a productive and valuable member of your organization. Sincerely, Rebecca DiVerniero, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Dixie State University (402) 613-2497 rebecca1369@hotmail.com
