APPARATUS

Circuit breakers
UniSafe switchboard can be equipped with both SF6 HD4 and vacuum VD4 withdrawable circuit breakers. The circuit breakers are fitted with a truck for the racking in and out with closed door. The light and compact structure of both types guarantees sturdiness and high mechanical reliability. The stored energy, free-release mechanical operating mechanism allows opening and closing without the operators intervention. The operating mechanism and the poles are fixed to the metal structure, which acts also as a support for the kinematics automation of the moving contacts.

performances at all service current values with minimum arc times and gradual arc extinction without chopping, restriking and operating overvoltages. These features guarantee a long electrical life for the circuit breaker and limited dynamic, dielectric and thermal stresses on the network. The poles, which form the breaking part, are maintenance-free, life-long sealed pressure systems in compliance with IEC 60056 Standards.

VD4 vacuum circuit breakers

VD4 circuit breakers installed in UniSafe switchboards use vacuum as a breaking and insulating medium. Thanks to their advanced construction techniques, VD4 circuit breakers ensure high performances under all service conditions. The arcing chambers are vertically installed into the epoxy resin pole, which prevents any possible damage due to external conditions. The pole acts as an insulator, ensuring an excellent distribution of the electrical field depending on the insulation voltages.

HD4 SF6 circuit breakers

HD4 medium voltage circuit breakers use sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) for arc quenching and as an insulating medium. HD4 breaking principle relies on compression and self-blast techniques in order to achieve the best

V-Contact vacuum contactors
UniSafe 12kV can be equipped with V-Contact withdrawable contactors. The contactors are suitable for alternate current lines with a high number of operations. They are made of a resin monobloc that houses the vacuum interrupters, the moving equipment, the control electromagnetic device, the multivoltage control feeder and the auxiliary accessories. The monobloc is also the fuseholder support, which is suitable for either DIN or BS fuses. The closing of the main contacts is carried out by the electromagnet, whereas the opening is tripped by an opposing spring. A compact and sturdy construction guarantees the apparatus a long electrical and mechanical life. A versatile range of accessories offers tailor-made contactor applications. The accessories can be promptly installed or replaced as the auxiliary circuits are mounted on an easily removable frame.

Up to 24 kV the system is made of air-insulated flat copper bars and it can be resin-insulated on request. 36 kV units are equipped with insulated round bars.

Bushings and shutters

The bushings consist of insulating monoblocs, which house the power contacts for the connection between circuit breaker and feeder / busbar compartments. The metallic shutters are automatically operated when the circuit breaker is drawn from test to service position and vice versa. The shutters can be equipped with a fail-safe device (on request) to prevent their manual opening when the circuit breaker is removed from the compartment and the door is open. On request, two independent padlocks can lock each shutter.

Branch connectors
The feeder compartment houses the branch system for connecting the power cables to the circuit breaker fixed insulating contacts. The branch connectors are made of electrolytic copper. Up to 24 kV the connectors are made of air-insulated flat copper bars and they can be resin-insulated on request. 36 kV units are equipped with insulated round connectors.

Cables
The cable compartment is easily accessible from the front thus making it possible to have a wallstanding installation. The units can be equipped with single or three core cables up to a maximum of twelve per phase depending on the rated voltage, the unit dimensions and the cable crosssection.

Earthing switch
Each feeder unit can be equipped with an earthing switch for the earthing of the power cables. The same device can also be used for the

INSTRUMENT TRANSFORMERS

Voltage transformers
The resin-insulated voltage transformers are used for the feeding of measuring instruments and protections. They are suitable either for fixed installation or mounted on withdrawable trucks. They comply with IEC 60044-2 Standards. The dimensions of the fixed version comply with DIN Standards 42600 Narrow Type. The withdrawable version equipped with fuses is custom-made. The voltage transformers can be fitted either with one or two poles. Their performances and accuracy classes comply with the functional requirements of the apparatus they are connected to. The withdrawable version is equipped with medium voltage protection fuses, their replacement can be carried out while the switchboard is in service.

The current transformers can be equipped also with a capacitive socket for being connected to voltage indicator lamps.

Toroidal current transformers

The toroidal current transformers are resininsulated and suitable for the feeding of measuring instruments and protections. These transformers can have a ring or a split core. Their performances and accuracy classes comply with the apparatus requirements. They are suitable both for measuring phase currents and determining earth fault currents. They meet the requirements of IEC 60044-1 Standards.

MEASUREMENT SENSORS

The introduction of digital technology in electrical measuring and protection instruments has radically changed the performances expected from transformers. As the levels of modern instrument analogue inputs have been significantly reduced, ABB has created a new range of sensors that fully satisfy any functional requirement of the new apparatus. UniSafe can be equipped with ABB KEVCD Block Type sensors up to 24 kV. The current sensors comply with IEC 60044-8 (CVD) Standards, whereas the voltage sensors comply with IEC 60044-7 Standards. The dimensions are in accordance with DIN 42600 Standards Narrow Type. The resin body can house both the current and the voltage sensors or the current sensor only. It is equipped also with a capacitive socket for being connected to voltage indicator lamps. The measurement sensors and the ABB multifunctional units guarantee a Cl.1 precision class.

If a uniform coil is wound on a non magnetic former of constant cross-section area and shaped into a closed loop, then the voltage induced in the coil is directly proportional to the rate of change of the current passing through the loop. To get a signal proportional to the given current, it is necessary to integrate this voltage; the multifunctional units incorporate the signal to derive a value proportional to the current to be used for current measurement and for protection feeding. Current sensor main characteristics Linear response over the whole measurement range; no saturation; no hysteresis; a single instrument covering both protection and measurement functions; high accuracy class; high degree of immunity to electromagnetic interference; the voltage output signal (150 mV) is proportional to the current variation time, the current is measured by integrating the signal; two coils only cover the 0-3200A rated current range; the winding can stay open even when the switchboard is in service.

Current sensor
The current sensor consists of a Rogowski coil, without the ferromagnetic core and therefore not affected by any possible saturation.

ABB KEVCD currentvoltage combi-sensors. 14

7
Voltage sensor
The voltage sensor consists of a resistive divider that picks up the signal. This type of sensor also cannot be saturated and gives a linear response over the whole measurement range. The output signal voltage is directly proportional to the primary voltage. A ceramic bar acts as resistive element. The voltage sensors can be used at the same time both for measurements and for feeding the protections. Voltage sensor main characteristics Linear response over the whole measurement range; no saturation; no ferroresonance a single instrument covering both protection and measurement functions; high accuracy class; high degree of immunity to electromagnetic interference; voltage output signal directly proportional to primary voltage; the partition ratio is 10000/1; a single divider covers the 0-24kV rated voltage range.

15

SERVICE TRUCKS

The UniSafe up to 24 kV range is fitted with all the service trucks required to complete the switchboard and needed in service operations and during maintenance work. The trucks are divided into four different types: earthing without making capacity; earthing with making capacity; cables test; isolation.

During the racking-in phase, the power cables earthing truck only lifts the bottom shutter and earths the contacts connected to the bottom branches (and therefore to the power cables) by means of the switchboard structure. These trucks can also be used in the bus-tie units. In this case, they earth the two sides of the main busbar system.

Earthing truck with making capacity Earthing truck without making capacity
These trucks carry out the same function as the earthing switches without making capacity. Therefore they do not have any capacity to earth the live circuits under fault conditions. They are used to ensure fixed additional earthing, as required by the plant service and maintenance procedures, as a further guarantee for personnel. The use of these trucks foresees removal of the switching device from the switchboard (circuitbreaker or contactor) and its replacement with the truck. The units preset for use of earthing trucks are fitted with a key lock which, if activated, prevents their racking-in. This truck is available in two versions: main busbar system earthing; power cables earthing. During the racking-in phase, the main busbar earthing truck only lifts the top shutter and earths the contacts connected to the top branches (and therefore to the main busbar system) by means of the switchboard structure. These trucks carry out the same function as the earthing switches with making capacity. They consist of circuit-breakers only fitted with top (main busbar earthing) or bottom (power cables earthing) terminals. The contacts without terminals are short-circuited by means of a copper bar and connected to earth by means of the apparatus truck. They keep all the characteristics of the circuitbreakers, such as full making capacity and opening of the live circuits under fault conditions. They are used to ensure extremely efficacious earthing on circuits stressed by a fault. They allow opening and closing operations to be carried out rapidly with remote electric control. During the racking-in phase, the main busbar earthing truck only lifts the top shutter and presets the contacts connected to the top branches (and therefore to the main busbar system) for closing to earth by means of a control. During the racking-in phase, the power cables earthing truck only lifts the bottom shutter and presets the contacts connected to the bottom branches (and therefore to the power cables) for closing to earth by means of a control. These trucks can also be used in bus-tie units. In this case, they earth the two sides of the main busbar system.

Power cables earthing truck with making capacity. 16

8
Power cables test truck
These trucks allow the insulation tests to be carried out on the power cables without accessing the feeder unit or disconnecting the cables from the switchboard. The use of these trucks foresees removal of the switching device from the switchboard (circuitbreaker or contactor) and its replacement with the truck. During the racking-in phase, the truck only lifts the bottom shutter and, by means of the connectors it is fitted with, allows connection of the test apparatus cables. This truck can only be used in the incoming/outgoing units.

Isolation truck
The isolation truck allows the switchboard top and bottom contacts to be connected directly. Connection is made extremely safe by using the poles of the HD4 circuit-breakers to insulate the connection bars from the external environment. In the incoming/outgoing units, it connects the main busbar system to the power cables, whereas in the bus-tie units, to the two sides of the busbar system. This truck is used in the UniSafe switchboards to make incoming/outgoing units without circuitbreakers in radial networks, to make cable connections between two switchboards placed in front of each other, and for constructing interconnection units and creating bus-tie-riser units with double insulation (in this case, both the units are made from bus-ties, the first fitted with a circuitbreaker and the other with an isolation truck).

PROTECTION AGAINST INTERNAL ARC

An internal arc is extremely rare in metal-clad switchboards since the apparatus is manufactured so as to prevent such an occurrence. Anyway, UniSafe ensures maximum personnel safety even in case of internal arc. The switchboard is built to withstand the overpressures ensuing from the internal arc and is fitted with ducts to convey the exhausted gases and prevent damage to operators and apparatus. The different units are guaranteed arc-proof in compliance with IEC 60298 Standards, enclosure AA, class accessibility A, criteria 1 to 6. IEC 60298 Standards for internal arc test Criteria definitions 1 The switchboard doors must remain closed and the covering units must never open up 2 Any component that may result hazardous for the personnel must never be ejected 3 The outside enclosure should never get pierced in the parts accessible to the personnel 4 Vertically arranged indicators outside the switchboard must not get burnt 5 Horizontally arranged indicators outside the switchboard must not get burnt 6 All the earthing connectors must remain effective.

Fast Recovery
UniSafe switchboards can be equipped with Fast Recovery, a specific protection system. This system is based on pressure sensors suitably located into the switchboard and directly connected to the opening releases. The sensors detect the pressure rise at the moment of the internal arc outburst and promptly open the circuit breaker. Thanks to the Fast Recovery System only the part involved in the fault is selectively excluded in less than 100 ms (including the circuit breaker opening time). A rapid elimination of the fault along with the metal segregation between compartments and the use of self-extinguishing materials drastically reduces any possible damage.

POWER FACTOR COMPENSATION

In order to compensate reactive energy caused by inductive loads (motors, transformers, lines), capacitor banks are installed in the network. The network compensation is highly suitable as it offers: reduction in the reactive power required; reduction in the investment costs of the network apparatus as a proportion to the power supplied; better voltage regulation; increased voltage on the load; limited network faults caused by a reactive current decrease. UniSafe can integrate all the instruments suitable for carrying out the power factor automatic compensation. The instruments are: REF542 Plus with PFC (Power Factor Controller) function; capacitor banks; damping reactances.

Capacitor banks
The switchboard is fitted with single and three phase capacitors. The dielectric material is a plastic film characterised by very low dielectric losses and a long operating life. The capacitors comply with IEC 60871 Standards. UniSafe offers a wide range of capacitor line-ups: single, in parallel and fractional banks. The capacitor number and the power supplied can be modified in time so as to guarantee a proper control of the reactive power according to the changing loads occurring throughout the daily cycle. According to main electrical parameters and units dimensions, the switchboard can be equipped with up to 3Mvar capacitors.

Advantages
Some of the outstanding features of integrated functions: REF542 Plus also performs a PFC function. No need of a dedicated device for the power factor control; reduction in the apparatus overall dimensions. Capacitors are housed into the switchboard so as to eliminate cable connections; substantial reduction in the wiring and simplified engineering; no need of additional measurement instruments.

PFC
The PFC function (ANSI code 55), which is carried out by a REF542 Plus specific software module, calculates the power factor in real time according to the three-phase current and voltage measurements. All standard REF542 Plus units are provided with this function, which controls the correction capacitor banks installed in the network and constantly compensates the power factor. The REF542 Plus unit performs the PFC function in four steps along with all its main tasks: protection, measurement, controls, signalling, interlocking, automation and communication.

UNISAFE 36

UniSafe 36 is the switchboard version made for applications over 24k V and up to 36 kV. UniSafe 36 can be used for higher altitudes above 1000 m a.s.l. for rated voltage below 36 kV. The main characteristics of the UniSafe switchboard remain the same. Some parts and components of the switchboard are specifically designed to guarantee the top performances required by the high voltage levels.

UniSafe 36 stands out thanks to its compactness (all the units are only 1000 mm wide), reduced footprint and the possibility of placing the switchboard against the installation room walls. All the operations can be carried out from the front of the switchboard. The switchboard is also available in the Duplex version for carrying out double busbar system configurations. The entire busbar system (main and branches) is made with insulated round bars. Apart from making the main busbar system installation operations extremely simple, these characteristics help to guarantee the performances required by a 36 kV air insulated switchboard. In order to ensure easy access to the feeder compartment and, at the same time, not to increase the switchboard dimensions, the transformers for current measurement are specially positioned with a particular triangular shape. This special layout of the transformers allows all the electrical parameters of the switchboard and ensures more space for the operators during erection and maintenance procedures.

MOTOR CONTROL CENTRE UNITS

UniMotor is a medium voltage motor control center to be used with UniSafe for up to 12 kV installations. Both switchboards feature the same ratings and electrical characteristics. Each unit consists of three superimposed compartments fitted with busbar, feeder and instrument compartments as well as a wiring duct for the auxiliary circuits. Thanks to these elements, the switchboard is suitable for a wide range of applications in very reduced overall dimensions. UniMotor switchboards are equipped with withdrawable V-Contact vacuum contactors and medium voltage protection fuses. The contactor is suitable for operating motors, transformers and capacitor banks.

Fields of application
The UniMotor flexibility allows different types of motor switching such as: across the line; motor reverse operation; autoreactor; autotransformer; star-delta; motor starting with reduced speed. UniMotor is suitable for all starting solutions that need more contactors for one single motor, as the switchboard houses the connections between the contactors and the interlocks and operating devices. A high number of standard combinations make modification, maintenance and extension very easy. Also UniMotor can be equipped with an integrated unit for power factor compensation.

12

UniMotor units are 900 mm wide and can house up to three superimposed contactors (single unit width: 300 mm). 25

MARINE APPLICATIONS

The high humidity and saline concentration as well as the temperature range, the vibrations and the variable trim are particularly severe conditions affecting the functional efficiency of ships, floating oilrigs, tankers, containerships etc. Moreover, in order to guarantee the necessary comforts and facilities, high electrical power, generation plants and control systems must be concentrated in significantly reduced overall dimensions. UniSafe, also if coupled with UniMotor, offers a wide range of apparatus and control-units satisfying any marine installation requirement.
UniSafe switchboard for marine application.

Applications
UniSafe apparatus are ideal technical solutions for marine applications: switchboard wall mounting and easy access from the front to all the equipment and cables (reduction in space); reduced width of contactor and circuit breaker units up to 1250A (600 mm); metallic partitions between each compartment (including the circuit breaker power contact metallic shutters) and earthing of all the components accessible to the personnel: apparatus, shutters, doors and the whole switchboard frame; high protection degrees (up to IP53) on the external enclosure; main busbars and branches made of uncovered non-insulated copper (so as to protect the switchboard from the ageing and decaying caused by severe ambient conditions); high fire-resistance due to scarce use of plastic and resins: auxiliary equipment and wiring are highly self-extinguishing; arc-proof construction, mechanical safety interlocks, automatic segregation shutters and apparatus control with door closed guarantee the personnel safety during installation, maintenance and service.
