How do I edit my draft? Editing is the last stage of the writing process before the final draft. At this stage students feel very comfortable spending lengthy amounts of time checking for correct spelling and strengthening the vocabulary of their essay. However students need to be aware that there is more to consider when editing than just correct spelling and vocabulary. On the 5th grade State Writing Test correct sentence formation and subject-verb agreement are a bigger component of Conventions than correct spelling. Therefore the students need to know how to edit for those mistakes also.

Essential Question

How do I edit my draft?

Plan/Mini-Lesson 1. Bring the students together on the floor. 2. Today the students will continue looking at the Persuasive Writing Checklist; however today they will focus on editing their drafts using the checklist as well as other apps on the iPod Touch, iPad, and classroom computers. The teacher will explain that the writing checklist is designed to help students with all areas of the writing process including editing. The teacher will also explain that using an iPod Touch and iPad can also assist them with the editing process. The section that will help them with editing their piece is Make your paper easy to read. The teacher will read over this section with the students and discuss what each item means. 3. The teacher will then explain that even though checking for correct spelling using Dragon Dictation on the iPod Touch or iPad is on the checklist, they are also going to check each of their sentences to make sure they make sense. The teacher will explain that they may use the learn portion of The Grammar App to help them if they are having trouble finding grammatical errors. 4. The teacher will model how to check each sentence using his/her own draft on the interactive whiteboard using Evernote. The teachers draft needs to have some errors in order for the students to practice identifying the errors and correcting them. By placing one finger at the beginning of a sentence and another finger at the end mark, the teacher will then read that sentence. The students will then discuss if the sentence makes sense is it a complete sentence, run-on, fragment, or has correct subject-verb agreement. The teacher will guide them in making any needed corrections. The teachers example essay will also be accessible to students on Evernote. 5. The teacher will then explain to the students that they will now edit their own drafts by checking each of their sentences for grammar errors. While on the floor, have the students practice looking at each individual sentence. After a few minutes allow several students to share what corrections they made. The teacher should make it clear that every student will check each of their sentences first before they begin editing their pieces for strengthening words. 6. The students will then work independently editing their drafts using Dragon Dictation to assist them with spelling corrections. Students will also try to improve the strength of certain words in their essays by using Grade 6 Vocab Audios and Pics. All editing corrections should be made on Evernote using either iPads or classroom computers. 7. The students will finally submit their edited drafts on Evernote so the teacher can make any necessary comments and leave feedback for their final draft.

Summarizing Strategy At the end of the individual writing time, have the students come back together and share what editing corrections they made.

Assessment The teacher will conference with individual students to help them with the editing process. Many students struggle with this process; the teacher might pull a small group of students together who need more assistance.
