Living the Story with Pastor Jeni

In the Lutheran tradition, to which we belong, there are two sacraments: Baptism and the Lords Supper. They are central to our life together in faith. Yet, they are so familiar that they become foreign. We get the word Sacrament from the Latin word sacramentum, translated by the church father Tertullian in the 2nd-3rd century. The original word is Greek, mysterion, from Mark 4:11 to you has been given the secret (mysterion) of the Kingdom of God. It is something special, something different, something out of the ordinary. (I know, interesting, right?!) For Lutherans, a sacrament is something commanded by Christ in scripture that bestows grace as well as a word of promise attached to a simple element. This month, we will explore baptism as a sacrament. Baptism is typically our first encounter of sacrament, a welcome into the community of faith to which we belong. We believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins (Nicene Creed). A sacrament is something commanded by Christ in scripture that bestows grace. We find Christs command to baptize in Matthew 28:19-20, Go into all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and I will be with you even to the end of the age. Martin Luther writes in his Large Catechism that baptism is necessary for salvation, delivering a person from sin, death and the power of evil. In fact, it delivers one into the kingdom of God! We must ask: How can simple water do this? Of course, it isnt the water, but the word in the water, spoken by the pastor, but placed there by God. A sacrament is a word of promise attached to a simple element. In baptism, God attaches a word of promise to the simple element of water. What is this word? We find it in places like Romans 6:4-5 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. This is how powerful and true Gods Word is. God puts his word into the simple (in baptism, water) and it affects salvation, brings in the kingdom, and gives new life. Luther writes that Baptism is something that we can cling to when we doubt. I think God places his word in the simple things because God knows well encounter them in our daily lives. We are made up of mostly water, we wash with water, play in water, consume water, in fact we cannot live without water! Luther goes even farther in his teaching, saying that baptism is a work of God, not a human work. So whats our role? Faith, given by the Holy Spirit. Faith trusts Gods promises. Without faith baptism is of no use to us; it offers a treasure of Gods promises. And yet, one cannot invalidate baptism. It is given by God. Faith does not make baptism, it receives baptism. And so, we are called to remember our baptism every day. So may we remember our baptism, daily drowning our sin and rising to live in the grace and love of God. In Christs grace, Pastor Jeni

Lutheran Social Service: The church received a letter from Lutheran Social Service regarding the growing number of homeless youth in Minnesota. They are requesting any aide from area churches and organizations to help alleviate this issue. The board would like to host a special fund raiser/offering designated to this need. The board would also like to see this become a line item for future budgets to support this need in the coming years. July Meeting: The board will meet briefly in July to follow up with the paternal leave issue so that this is in place for the birth of the Grangaard baby. Synod Assembly: Kris Johnson and Linda Pavola accompanied Pastor Jeni as delegates to this years synod assembly. Bishop Larry was re-elected as our bishop. Please keep Trisha Baker (Afghanistan), Kally Anderson (United States) and Tyler Payla (returned from Kuwait) in your prayers as they serve their country.
Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in trials and temptations; give courage to face perils that surround them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Eternal rest, grant, O Lord, and light perpetual shine. Ardyce Messerschmidt Mary Hanson

Thank You!
To the ladies that made the graduation quilts, thank you so much for the graduation gift. The quilt will be accompanying me through college, and the rest of my life. It is a great remembrance of my time spent at Glyndon Lutheran.
