Novel ship concepts, increasing size and speed, and shipowner's demand for low operational costs require

that a ship's hydrodynamic performance be studied and optimised at the highest level of sophistication. All hydrodynamic performance need to be considered so as to optimise trade-offs between resistance, propulsion, sea keeping and manoeuvring. Fluid flow predictions for ships and marine structures are complex and challenging. Up till now model testing prevail which is often prohibitively expensive in terms of time and budget and hence only a very few hull modifications can be explored to arrive at the best possible solution. Lately, CFD tools relying on potential flow methods as well as more complex and resource intensive RANSE methods are being used for hydrodynamic optimisation, which has been proved to reduce optimisation costs considerably and improve the accuracy of solution immensely. To perform such optimisations using CFD, a high level of knowledge of the tool is essential.

The SHIPFLOW CFD codes by Flowtech has been developed specially for ships and has proven its effectiveness for many projects through the years. SHIPFLOW codes are continuously improved based on research and industry feedback. There are only a few installations in India at present and is growing. The Central institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), Kochi, Kerala has successfully put SHIPFLOW for optimising fishing vessel designs where model testing is prohibitively expensive due the enormity of design variations. CIFT in association with Flowtech International AB is conducting a SHIPFLOW training programme in India which opens up a great opportunity to all those who are engaged in ship design and research to familiarise and get hands-on-experience on the world's best CFD tool for the marine industry. We invite all those interested to set aside the dates April15-18 to make use of this rare opportunity at a very nominal cost

The three first days of the training gives a good overview of the complete SHIPFLOW Design Package. It provides the participants with the basic knowledge required to use the software on their own. Although the training is aimed for at new users of SHIPFLOW, it is also a suitable course for current users who wants to learn more about the latest developments or just refresh their knowledge The fourth day is devoted to more advanced applications with SHIPFLOW. The first application will be on the selfpropulsion simulation capability in SHIPFLOW. This part of the training will also make use of the unique features available when using the Friendship Framework and SHIPFLOW jointly. This is demonstrated in an example of shape optimisation Each user needs to bring one computer for running SHIPFLOW. A Laptop with 64-bit operating system (Windows or Linux) and 4 GB of RAM memory is recommended. Smaller laptop will also work for most of the exercises. Flowtech will provide the necessary software and licenses

CERTIFICATE WILL BE ISSUED ON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE COURSE

A nominal fee of Rs. 10,000/- per participant will be charged which include the course documentation, tea/coffee breaks and lunches. 50% discount is available for students, if bonafide student certificate is produced. Course will be conducted at CIFT, Kochi, Kerala. Participants are requested to make their own arrangements for their stay and transportation to and from the course venue. However, assistance for arranging accommodation in hotels will be provided on specific request from participants. A few participants could also be accommodated in CIFT guest house/other guest houses based on availability, if requested in advance. Students can be accommodated in training hostel at very reasonable rates based on availability, if booked sufficiently early.
THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS IS LIMITED. PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU REGISTER EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT. Kerala, blessed with great natural beauty and diverse ecology, has been rated in the top three tourist destinations by the World Travel & Tourism Council and featured in National Geographic Traveler's '50 greatest places of a lifetime'. Whether it's the serene backwaters or the splendid hill stations, the stunning beaches or the rich cultural aspects, there is so much to explore in Kerala. Due to its close proximity to sea, the climate of Kerala is neither too hot nor too cold. This has made Kerala an all-season destination, although the period between October and April are considered best, as this time offers moderate temperatures around Kerala, making it ideal to visit the marvellous state. The period between April and August is considered the best time for getting Ayurvedic treatments, for which Kerala is renowned worldwide. In April, it is advised to carry cotton clothes which are loose in fitting and light in colour as the summer sets in. Occasional showers with lightning is a characteristic of this season. Kochi (colonial name Cochin) is a vibrant city situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula in the breathtakingly scenic and prosperous state of Kerala. Its strategic importance over the centuries is underlined by the sobriquet, "Queen of the Arabian Sea". From time immemorial, the Arabs, British, Chinese, Dutch, and Portuguese have left indelible marks on the history and development of Cochin. Over the years, Cochin has emerged as the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala and is proud of its world class port and international airport that link it to many major cities worldwide. The city is also well connected to other parts of the country through rail and road. Kochi is the arguably the ideal starting point for exploring the unfathomable diversity and beauty of Kerala.
