SUBJECT INTRODUCTION
Business Intelligence and Tools (MI 0036) Business intelligence (BI) is a wide category of applications and technologies which gathers, stores, analysis, and provides access to data. Business Intelligence is a term used to refer a number of activities a company may undertake to gather information about their market or their competitors. It is a managerial concept that helps mangers in the organisations to manage information and make factual decisions. This idea has become a popular movement for businesses concerned in adding value to their decision making processes. This course covers the aspects of Business essentials, Business Intelligence types, and how to architect the data. Business Intelligence mainly deals with Data Mining and the various techniques used for mining. This course also covers the Data Warehousing and the various techniques involved in data warehousing. It also describes the Data Extraction techniques, Business Intelligence life cycle, Business Intelligence user model, the various issues and challenges, and also the data mart and its significance. This course also describes the various aspects governing the choice to choose the right platform and explains about the Business Intelligence products and vendors. Unit 1: Business Intelligence an Introduction This Unit gives the definition of Business Intelligence and explains the different ways of evaluating Business Intelligence. It also highlights the value of Business Intelligence and its applications. Unit 2: Business Essentials This unit deals with Business essentials, which is a concept of converting large amounts of corporate data into useful information. It explains the Business Intelligence Environment and platform, the role of business intelligence, and the business landscape. Unit 3: Business Intelligence Types This unit explains you about the types of business intelligence tools, which are a type of application software designed to report, analyse, and present data in various organisations.

Unit 4: Architecting the Data This unit discusses the Enterprise data model, granularity of data, and various techniques of data reporting and querying. This unit familiarises you with the values of a good design flow for information, data partitioning, and total data quality management. Unit 5: Introduction to Data Mining This unit familiarises you with the concepts of data mining. It explains how the Data Mining works, its advantages and disadvantages, and the ethical and global issues of mining. Unit 6: Data Mining Techniques Data Mining Techniques This unit covers how statistics is used in data mining and various techniques used to identify patterns in datasets. It also gives an overview of information processing models and its applications. Unit 7: Introduction to Data Warehousing This unit introduces you to Data Warehousing and its various characteristics, the differences in online transfer processing and online analytical processing. It also explains the different data models for multidimensional databases, Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) tools and practical applications of OLAP. Unit 8: Different Ways of Data Warehousing This unit explains about different types of business models. Unit 9: Knowledge management This unit explains about Knowledge Management, the need and significance of knowledge management. It also explains about generating, using and storing knowledge and the various technologies used for knowledge management. Unit 10: Data Extraction This unit explains the process and techniques used for data extraction and the values of identifying source of data Unit 11: Business Intelligence Life Cycle This unit explains about the Business Intelligence lifecycle and the Enterprise Performance Life Cycle (EPLC) Framework. It explains how the successful implementation of a project is effected by human factors and the

strategies used in BI like creating a roadmap and project planning. It explains on how to choose between centralised or decentralised BI architecture, and the stages in developing BI. Unit 12: Business Intelligence User Model This unit explains the history of Business Intelligence and gives an overview of analysing the opportunity in BI. It explains the application of Dashboards and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) in BI. It also explains the types of end users using BI application and the concept of content management system. Unit 13: Business Intelligence Issues and Challenges This unit describes the challenges, while implementing BI and the process of developing the BI application. Issues like effects of inaccurate information and understanding customer pain points are also discussed. Unit 14: Business Intelligence Strategy and Roadmap This unit explains the strategies involved in a BI solution. It also describes the various factors that need to be taken in to account, while devising a plan for a BI. Unit 15: Implementing Business Intelligence This unit describes the various aspects governing the choice and the right platform for any BI. It also explains about the BI products and vendors.
