Sunshine Bay
Boat Launch Renovations Completed
Te West Arm Outdoors Club (WAOC) has fnished
re-decking the boat launch at Sunshine Bay on the West
Arm of Kootenay Lake.
Te project was partially completed last year and
fnished in mid June through the collective eforts of club
members. Te work party fnished the decking, re-an-
chored exterior foats and improved ramp access. All the
lumber for the second phase of the project was donated
by the local mill, Harrop-Procter Forest Products (HPFP),
which is part of the local community forest operations.
Te boat launch is maintained by the club and was do-
nated to the Regional District of Central Kootenay as part
of their Sunshine Bay Regional Park facilities.
Te club is progressing with its next project, re-establish-
ing a fshing wharf at the site of the former Procter Wharf
near the outlet to the main body of Kootenay Lake. Te
platform and walkways will be wheelchair accessible and
user-friendly, enabling those without boat access to enjoy
quality fshing opportunities. Young anglers are a particu-
lar focus of the project, which will see initial construction
begin later this summer during the fsheries window.
Once completed, the fshing platform will be an integral
part of the outlet community. Te cost of the project is ap-
proximately $80,000. A number of organizations are contribut-
ing funding towards the project. Te West Arm Outdoors Club
meets most months on Wednesday evenings starting at 7 pm at
the Harrop Hall. All area residents are invited to join the club.

Wildlife Displaced by Flooding
Te Canadian Wildlife Federation advises people in
food areas to be aware of wildlife that may be displaced
as a result of the rising water.
Flooded habitats could force wildlife to seek temporary
refuge in areas where they might not normally be found
such as residential communities. People are encouraged
to minimize their contact with the animals as they may be
under duress and in survival mode.
Residents are reminded to:
Stay away from areas where wildlife have taken refuge.
Not interact with or feed wild animals.
Avoid roads in fooded areas to reduce the interference
with wildlife and possible wildlife collisions.
We recognize that people want to try to help wildlife,
but in these circumstances, ofen the best thing you can
do is allow them to fnd their own refuge and food, says
Wade Luzny, CWF CEO and Executive Vice-President.
Feeding wildlife will encourage them to stay in the area
as they will see it as a new food source.
Wildlife posing a threat to humans should be reported
to local wildlife authorities.

Nelson Brewing Companys newest addition to their
lineup, Tall Tale Organic Wheat Ale, has been named
the Of cial Beer of the Elephant Mountain Literary
Festival by the organizing committee of the Nelson event,
scheduled for Tursday, July 11 to Sunday, July 14.
Story is the beginning of literature, said festival director
Lynn Krauss. And here in Western Canada, tall tales were
the frst stories people loved to pass along. So were very
pleased to name Nelsons newest brew as our of cial drink.
Kraus said Tall Tale Ale would be served at the Elephant
Mountain Literary Festivals opening gala on July 11, as
well as at evening readings by featured festival authors on
July 12 and July 13.
Teme of the this years second annual literary festival
is Paths to the Page. Te opening gala will feature local
poets, musicians, and BC wines as well as Nelson Brew-
ing Company products. Te event will be held at the
Shanti Centre, the former Christian Science Church at
237 Baker Street.
Reading on the evening of Friday, July 12 at the Hume
Room of the Hume Hotel, 422 Vernon Street, will be Giller
Prize winner MG Vassanji; 2011 CBC Canada Reads win-
ner novelist Terry Fallis, and Order of Canada and Order
of BC winner Howard White, publisher, nonfction auth-
or, and poet.
Te following evenings reading at the Hume Room fea-
tures Trillium Award winner novelist Camilla Gibb, along
with popular BC poet, fction author and musician John
Lent, and Quebec graphic novelist Pascal Girard.
Te Elephant Mountain Literary Festival also includes
credit courses in writing by BCs Interior mountain col-
leges, plus publishers Kirstin Cochrane of McClelland &
Stewart Doubleday Canada and Tracy Hurren, managing
editor of Montreals Drawn & Quarterly.
Various panels during the day on July 13, and an oppor-
tunity for Festival-goers to pitch their manuscript to a lit-
erary agent, round out the event.

Glacier Creek Park Closed
Glacier Creek Park Regional Park on Duncan Lake is
closed until further notice.
Te park cannot be accessed because of the efects that
recent fooding have had on the road and Hamill Creek
Bridge, said Cary Gaynor, Parks Operations Supervisor for
the Regional District of Central Kootenay. Te park could
be closed for at least several weeks, or longer, said Gaynor.
Once staf have determined that the park can be safely
accessed, the public will be notifed. Te RDCK appreci-
ates the publics cooperation and patience.

Over 80 Years Of
Hospital Volunteer Work
Te Nelson Chapter of the KL Hospital Auxiliary was
formed in 1931 and has been operating ever since. It is not
just a bunch of women having bake sales, although bake
sales are one of its activities. In 2011, the Nelson Chapter of
the KL Hospital Foundation donated $39,000 to the equip-
ment fund of the foundation, in 2012, $16,000 and so far
this year, $1,000, plus purchased wheel chairs for $5000.
Te 70 plus members of the Auxiliary raised this money by
operating the hospital gif shop, providing TV service to the
patients, operating the ATM machine in the hospital lobby,
conducted several raf es and bake sales and other projects.
To meet this goal, the members put in approximately 15,000
volunteer hours per year.
Te Auxiliary also takes care of the gardens and planters
at the hospital, decorates the hospital for special holidays
and with the help of other volunteers, takes little gifs to the
patients at Christmas and Easter. In addition, the Auxiliary
recognizes the New Years Baby, with a special gif. In the
past, the Auxiliary has purchased furniture for various de-
partments in the hospital, such as maternity, palliative care
and the lounge areas.
Gif Shop Te gif shop is located of the lobby at the
hospital. Te shop has a wide variety of small gifs, knitting,
blankets, quilts, gif cards, used books, patient comfort sup-
plies, confections, stufed toys, baby gifs, etc. Te gif shop
has cards crafed by the Auxiliary members who do this to
raise funds specifcally for furnishings for the chemo unit.
Tey are beautiful cards and are available for all occasions.
Te shop is open from 10 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday
and 1 to 3 pm on Saturdays.
TVs for patients TVs are available for patients of the
hospital. Tere is a request form on each ward to be com-
pleted for the patient. Members of the Auxiliary check daily
and supply and hook up the TVs.
ATM Machine Te cash machine, located in the hospital
lobby, is rented by the Hospital Auxiliary. One-half of the
$1.50 dispensing fee goes to the Auxiliary. Tis raises about
$1000 per year.
Gardens Te Auxiliary plants and maintains the gar-
dens, fower boxes and hanging plants at the hospital. Tis
is done to create a more pleasant atmosphere for both the
patients and visitors to the hospital.
Membership Te Auxiliary is always looking for new
members. If you have time to volunteer, please email Carol
Tompson at kooltho@gmail.com. Te Auxiliary meets on
the second Friday of each month (except July and August) in
the 4th foor meeting room at KLH, 3 View Street, Nelson.
If you dont have time to join, but like to knit or quilt the
Auxiliary would be happy to have your donations, just drop
them of at the Gif Shop. Te Auxiliary also has wool avail-
able if your need it to knit for the gif shop.
Bake Sales Te next bake sale will be in October, these
bake sales are very well attended, so keep your eyes open for
the date and time.
Raf es Te Auxiliary operates both a spring and Christ-
mas raf e each year. Te tickets sell out and this years
spring raf e is no exception. Watch for the Christmas raf e,
the prizes are great thanks to our very supportive donators.
Educational Bursary Each year, the Auxiliary gives a
well-deserving LVR Student a $1000 bursary to continue
their education in the medical feld. Te Auxiliary usually
also contributes to a regional bursary at Selkirk College and
this year donated $500 towards this bursary.
Loving Bowls Event
ANKORS (AIDS Network Kootenay Outreach and Sup-
port Society) was established in 1992 as a non-proft so-
ciety. We serve those living with and at the greatest risk
of acquiring HIV/AIDS and/or HCV, who have dif culty
obtaining services elsewhere. Alongside logistical barriers,
persons living with Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS face stig-
ma, oppression, discrimination and isolation. ANKORS
advocates eradicating these barriers through education
and mindfulness.
Currently, ANKORS and the AIDS Walk for Life are
raising money for the HIV/AIDS Foundation Fund. Tese
monies are in place to support HIV positive residents of
the West Kootenay/Boundary region to ofset medical
fees, travel expenses, or to subsidize costs for nutritional
supplements, dental work, food security, etc. Tis year, we
have created a similar fund for people living with Hepatitis
C. Working with our community on events such as this,
is an ideal way of teaching community awareness and ad-
dressing stigma around blood-borne illnesses.
Tis event Loving Bowls also marks the 20th anni-
versary of ANKORS, and in celebration we are hosting a
luncheon and bringing the amazing advocacy quilts for
AIDS & Hep C to the Kutenai Art Terapy Institute. Local
restaurant, Manaeesh, will be catering and flling locally
crafed ceramic bowls with vegetarian faire; the bowls will
be take home mementos of the day.
Join us on July 10 from 12 pm to 2 pm at the Kutenai Art
Terapy Institute, 191 Baker Street in Nelson.
Tickets are a $40 to $50 donation and can be purchased
at ANKORS, located at 101 Baker Street in Nelson. All of
the proceeds of this event will go to our Foundation Funds.

Become A Member Of NETS
Nelson Electric Tramway Society (NETS) have been
seasonally operating the original Nelson trolley, Streetcar
#23, on a symbolic route along Kootenay Lakes majestic
waterfront for over 20 years. Te society is completely run
by volunteers, from maintenance to engineering to con-
ducting and driving.
Te NDCU recognize the signifcance of having Street-
Car#23 as an attraction in Nelson. It provides another
reason for people to visit this beautiful region; it is a des-
tination experience for enthusiasts and fun activity for the
entire family. NETS also provide volunteer opportunities
for people to stay active and contribute to the continuing
growth and beauty of the community.
Te Streetcar Society also has plans for the future, one of
which is the development of the Museum in the Lakeside
Trolley Barn. NETS feels that it is important to keep our his-
tory alive and the addition of the Museum will help them
become a year round attraction.

Procter and Harrop, two small communities on the
West Arm of Kootenay Lake, have found a way to main-
tain the forest which supplies the small creeks from which
residents draw their water supplies.
Forest Service apparently has a mandate to log every water-
shed and this is usually done by ofering the timber to lumber
companies. Naturally their objective is to make money from
this, so they extract the maximum volume, leaving the bush
in disarray. Tis naturally disrupts the small streams and
springs, and can all too easily create landslides.
From 1951 to 1967 the Wirsig familys Gray Creek Forest
Products operated on the eastern shore from Boswell to
Riondel using small roads and equipment that predated
the clear cut revolution. Tey only felled the timber they
needed to meet their orders, leaving any trees they didnt
need. Tis was true selective logging taking out only the
largest trees allows the sun to reach trees of 14 diameter,
so that another crop of timber can be harvested only 15
years later. However this doesnt produce every available
dollar that clear cutting does, and it doesnt produce the
maximum returns that the big companies require.
Te residents of Procter and Harrop knew that this was
the way to handle their backyard, and in 1997 when the BC
Ministry of Forests asked for proposals for Community For-
est Pilot Projects, the HarropProcter Watershed Protection
Society put together a 300 page application that combined
community involvement, environmental concerns, and busi-
ness opportunities. It was one of only seven chosen in 1999.
Te HarropProcter Pilot Project has gone two steps
past the typical community forest by implementing an
ecosystem-based planning to leave a fully functioning for-
est afer logging takes place. So far this is the only com-
munity forest in Canada with ecosystem-based plans in
place for both landscape and timber stand levels. Some
large trees are lef standing to provide the best quality seed
for natural re-growth.
When you cross on the Kootenay Lake ferry please com-
pare the north side of the West Arm to the south. You will
see that the area from Procter to Harrop has no visible clear
cuts, while many can be seen on the mountains across the
water above Balfour and Queens Bay. What a contrast to
waiting 80 years for another crop on replanted clear cuts!

website also describes the ecologically responsible wood
products sold by the HarropProcter Community Co-op,
and it provides links to other organizations and research
groups that are working toward the same goals.
Gray Creek Store is the frst lumberyard to stock some of
this reasonably priced quality eco-friendly lumber. Staf mem-
ber Matthew Winger, who serves as the stores building sup-
plies and contractor sales is a world traveller who has built
his new home on the eastern shore, and was very interested
in Harrop-Procters story and products. Te store is currently
stocking rough sawn landscape grade cedar, which is perfect
for garden projects due to its rot resistance and economical
price compared to A grade cedar. In the future there are plans
to ofer the best cedar and fr decking Harrop-Procter has to
ofer, since this partnership makes it so we can match the best
wood for the right project.
Physics Students
Tour Local Hydro Facility
LV Rogers Secondarys Grade 12 Physics class took part
in a tour of the Brilliant Expansion Project near Castlegar
on June 13 to cap of their unit on electromagnetic in-
duction. Led by Bill Clark, Senior Projects Engineer and
Andre Noel, Health and Safety Manager for Columbia
Power, students toured the service bay, viewed the intake
area and walked across the Brilliant Dam.
Te Brilliant Expansion facility is co-owned by Colum-
bia Power and Columbia Basin Trust and was commis-
sioned in 2007.

Global Solidarity Challenge
Te Nelson Area and Kaoma Alliance (NAKA) is en-
couraging the community of Nelson to Take the Chal-
lenge by participating in the Global Solidarity Chal-
lenge. Te Global Solidarity Challenge is a movement
that aims to raise awareness about global poverty, food
security issues, and sustainable living. Nelsonites that
participate in the challenge will choose one day where
they will live below the extreme poverty line of $1.25 per
day in the form of food.
Te 2008 recession caused food prices to spike and hit
record highs around the world in 2011. Te high global
prices are a special concern for the citizens of Africa,
where less local supply of food, due to droughts, means
more reliance on imports to meet domestic demand.
About 1.29 billion people around the world are forced
to live of like this every day out of necessity, says Isabelle
Herzig, Project Coordinator for NAKA. Members of the
Nelson community that partici-
pate in this challenge are en-
couraged to spread awareness of
this global issue and re-examine
their household sustainability.
Te Global Solidarity Chal-
lenge will take place from July
15 to 21. Nelsonites are being
challenged to participate for one
day on July 16th to eat for $1.25.
NAKA is asking participants to
donate any excess spending of
the $1.25 to their organization.
A costing sheet has been de-
veloped in order to make this
more doable. For example rice
is priced at .06 cents a cup and a
banana .08cents
If a participant goes over
$1.25 during their challenge,
were asking them to donate the
diference to NAKA. For ex-
ample, if a person spends $15
during the challenge, we would
ask for them to donate $14.75 to
NAKA, says Tracey Kikals, lead
coordinator for NAKAs Global
Solidarity Challenge.
Proceeds of the donations
will go towards supporting
NAKA programming in Zam-
bia. NAKA will be sending a
trainer to Kaoma to train lo-
cal trainers on NAKAs Safe
Spaces program, a curriculum
to assist Zambian communities
and professionals to deal with
child abuse in their families and
villages.
Members of the Nelson com-
munity that are interested in

Registration for Summer Reading Club activities is

Our summer activities start of with the Superhero Kick-
of Costume Party on Wednesday, July 3 from 12:30 pm
to 2:30 pm. Dress up as your favourite superhero, play
games, win prizes and do some fun arts and crafs. A

On Tuesday, July 16 from 2 pm to 3 pm award-winning
childrens musician from Vancouver Will Stroet will be
