Dear all I hope all is well. Unfortunately due to sudden family problems, mostly illness of a family member, I will not be able to organize the session on world rock art, under material culture studies, that I had proposed to chair, at the SHA, Quebec. I need to attend my family as soon as possible, if feasible. I do sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and if some of you have been planning to submit papers in the proposed session. Many thanks and kindest regards, Sincerely yours, Ruman. ----------------------------------------------------------------Ruman Banerjee PhD research student Department of Archaeology and Anthropology University of Bristol, BS8 1UU, UK ------------------------------------------------------------------On 22 June 2013 14:08, Ruman Banerjee<arxrb@bristol.ac.uk>wrote: Dear all
I hope you all are fine and doing well. I am very pleased to inform you all that the Society for Historical Archaeology Conference will be held in Quebec City, Canada in 2014. I have proposed a session on rock art which primarily deals with material culture in archaeology, anthropology, geography and history. I have copied the link below. (http://www.conferium.com/Clients/sha2014/symposium_display_361_en.lasso) This session comes under the theme 'Material Culture Studies'. I am including the Session Title and Abstract here for your convenience. Session Title: Global Rock Art as Material Culture: Delineations of Identity, Power, History and Social Organization World rock art is one of the unique manifestations of material record of humankind spread across the length and breadth of the globe barring a few countries and regions. Rock art in the form of paintings and engravings demonstrates social, local and global identities, power relationships, mythology and indigenous history both for the creators and consumers of this multidimensional social fact. The process of the production and consumption of rock art, morphic and thematic variability, techno-stylistics, chronous-mg4.mail.yahoo.com/neo/launch#mail 1/2

stylistics and superimpositions in certain discreet parts of the globe seems to define social hierarchy by means of magico-religious belief systems. Depending on the region and history, rock art represents versatility and different forms of social realities. The social structure and organization of the pre-urban, preliterate societies of the historic past gets reflected in the global and local rock art emanating further clues for material culture studies within the purview of rock art research involving comparative accounts on painted ceramics, and other forms of mobile art, existing in the historical record of the region. This session aims to explore, discuss, analyse and interpret the very many aspects of material culture both in terms of theory and practice; opening up new avenues within the framework of historical archaeology related to world rock art. Additionally, a key aspect of this session is to seek out known or anticipated issues that require to be addressed regarding current or future applications of methodological systems developed in historical rock art research. The final submission deadline for this conference is the 10th of July 2013. I am not sure this date will get extended or not. With very humble apologies for this late notice, I would like to request you all to submit abstracts for this session, where we should be able to deal with several disciplinary interfaces, along with novel research paradigms to make this session interesting for all and to publish one edited volume later on, depending on the feasibility of time and other associated factors. For details on how to submit and other related information, please do refer to this link (http://www.sha2014.com/doc/SHA2014-CallforPapers-WEB). I am extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused due to the late notice. I count on your cooperation, support, suggestions and scholarly contributions. Many thanks and kind regards. Sincerely yours, Ruman. ----------------------------------------------------------------Ruman Banerjee PhD research student Department of Archaeology and Anthropology University of Bristol, BS8 1UU, UK ------------------------------------------------------------------
