The Division of Health Research, located within Lancaster Universitys School of Health and Medicine, has an international reputation for its contribution to research in the field of public health, most notably in relation to the social determinants of health and social inequalities in health. Our areas of expertise include social exclusion, the employment and social consequences of chronic illness, and the evaluation of complex area-based interventions. In response to the growing demand for doctoral level education in public health we are offering a new doctoral programme. The PhD in Public Health is a part-time distance e-learning course which has been designed to meet the needs of people working in the field who wish to enhance their research skills, develop their understanding of policy and practice and make an original contribution to knowledge development. The programme will help to create and support tomorrows leaders in public health, across a range of roles and organisational settings.

This new programme of study will be of considerable interest to senior public health practitioners who will benefit from the opportunity to continue to develop skills and to incorporate an academic dimension into their practice. About The Doctorate


The aim of the PhD in Public Health is to equip people working in a wide range of roles in the field of public health to undertake advanced study within their chosen field and to gain a deeper and more critical insight into their practice, whether they are based within health services, local government, education, research or management. It offers the opportunity to complete a PhD by distance e-learning course work, research and thesis.

Entry Requirements
The standard minimum entry requirements are a recognised good first degree or equivalent experience. Where English is not the first language an IELTS score of 6.5 is required.

Mode of Study
The course will be delivered primarily through distance e-Learning supported by an annual residential block. Years 1 and 2 involve taught modules in the theory and practice of public health; research design and research ethics; research methods; and organisational change and development in public health. The research component (Years 3 onwards) will be supervised from Lancaster but undertaken in the students environment.

The objectives of the course are:


< To promote advanced knowledge and a critical understanding of public health policy and practice < To enhance leadership skills and effectiveness < To foster critical approaches to evidence review and knowledge management < To develop advanced skills in research design, practice and dissemination < To improve scholarship in presenting written and oral arguments
