D.A.V. COLLEGE FOR GIRLS

Yamunanagar - 135 001 Best Women College of Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra College with Potential for Excellence NAAC Accredited Grade "A"

Five essential skills that a positive leader must have if he/she wants to succeed in increasing the involvement of his/her group. First skill that a leader must have is the skill of building trust by trusting others. It means having a basic faith in people, a strong faith that people are essentially trustworthy. This trust is built not just because you are trustworthy but it is built by demonstrating trust building behaviour and the most significant of these behaviours is to trust others.

Another skill that develops a positive relationship between the leader and the group is mentoring. An effective leader must give and receive feedback on the performance of the group and guide and counsel them in a way that increases the level of commitment. The group or the team must regularly be conveyed how they are performing and are made comfortable enough to discuss their needs with their manager for further growth and development. Inclusiveness is another skill that a good leader must have and this inclusion of each member of the team increases the level of commitment of the members of the team. An effective leader has the skill of identifying the strengths of each member of the group and knows how to get the best out of each person. A good leader knows well that people with different values can work together effectively when they are committed to the same values and standards of work performance. A good leader makes its team aligned with the purpose, values and vision of the organization; helps them see the connection between what they do and the success of the organization; understands that increasing the owning level of the team with the organization's values would automatically enhance the performance standards of the team. An effective leader must concentrate on developing the leadership potential of each member of the group and focus on developing a shared leadership approach for improving the level of performance. All these skills are interdependent. That is, you have to build trust before you can be effective at mentoring and mentoring skill will be effective at inclusion and alignment. These skills don't come naturally to many persons. It takes time in developing them. But these can sure be developed and learnt with constant practice and training.
