Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.): Round of 16 match at this 2013 FIFA Under-20 World Cup played between Nigeria and Uruguay. The South Americans dominated the match for most of the time and thus won the match by 2:1, which was deserved. The Nigerian team were however weakened by a direct sending-off at the end of the first half. The crowd created an acceptable atmosphere for this match, supported by a basically good field condition. A UEFA quartet controlled this match headed by Serbias Milorad Mai who faced some challenging situations specially in the late phase of each half where he had to keep his concentration at a high level.

Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.) Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referees decision Correct Red Card against Nigerian defender #4 for serious foul play having gone 41 into a challenge with excessive force. The foul was characterized by studs having been to the front and high intensity. Brave and good decision. Correct Penalty Kick awarded to Uruguay: Nigerias goalkeeper left his goal in an over-ambitious way and lost the 1 vs 1 duel with URU #9, who was able to enter 82 the penalty area but was then stopped irregularly by NGA defender #2 who slightly but clearly carted out his right leg. A Yellow Card would have been adequate, which the referee did not issue. Good and very important call though.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points Good foul detection. He had a good feeling in some moments when the players 1. seeked too easy free kicks. Also his detection of hidden elbow infringements was good. 2. Match Control. His authority was never questioned, thanks to positive point 3. Self-confident approach, high level of determination. He never gave rise to doubts 3. about his decisions and earned a high level of acceptance, also after the RC. 4. Alertness in terms of crucial decisions, no hesitation to take brave calls. Points for Improvement Inconvincing card management in terms of cautions. The referee issued three yellow cards which were wrong or exaggerated: URUs Rodriguez received a hard caution for an allegedly repeated pulling and holding prior to a corner kick replays showed it was a clever trick by a Nigerian who provoked this body contact in a way (26); NGA #4 received an evitable YC after a duel in which he went a bit 1. too ambitiously (39); finally a wrong YC to URU #10 for an alleged foul the player clearly and fairly played the ball. The referee really should avoid a too strict card management when it is not needed. The match was apart from the red card really fair and did not require such a high amount of cautions. Quite mechanic and hectical movement and gestures on the pitch. Could be a bit 2. smoother to create a subtle calmness. It might be his style but sometimes he seems to be a bit unfriendly with players, 3. and this was not always needed.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) An authoritative referee with a clear and strict line. He achieved a lot of match control by that but also spoilt this match a bit. Six yellow cards were unnecessary.

Please assess the first assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour He made an alert impression regarding offsides and onsides (43, 74), which were overall all correct. One must highlight the very good offside decision in full time minute 52, where a rebound from the Nigerian goalkeeper created an active offside position and also the onside decision preceding Uruguays first goal. Normal performance apart from that assisting the referee here and there.

Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour Overall the second assistant referee was a good team-member and supported the referee in some calls, such as a YC in 45. Correct offside in a tight situation in the Uruguayan penalty area in 90+2. full time However, he missed a blatant offside in 90+1 (1 metre) very close to the goalline. He was well positioned and should have seen this clear offside. A lack of concentration very probably.
