Approval Date: August 4, 2006 Code Cases will remain available for use until annulled by the applicable Standards Committee.

Case 2130-4 ASTM A 841/A 841M-98 Plate Section VIII, Divisions 1, 2, and 3 Inquiry: Is it permissible, in construction of welded pressure vessels conforming to the rules to Section VIII, Division 1, Division 2, or Division 3, to use plate conforming to ASTM A 841/A 841M-98 plate? Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that it is permissible to use ASTM A 841/A 841M-98, Grade A, Class 1 and Grade B, Class 2 plate in welded construction under the rules of Section VIII, Division 1, 2, or 3, provided the following additional requirements are met: (a) The thickness shall not exceed 2.5 in. (b) For Division 3 construction, transverse Charpy V-notch impact test specimens shall be used. The test specimens, the testing requirements, and the energy values shall meet the requirements of Article KM-2 in Part KM of Division 3. (c) The design temperature shall not exceed 650F. (d) The following allowable stress values, the allowable stress intensity values, and yield strength values shall apply: (1) Divisions 1 and 2. The maximum allowable stress values for Division 1 construction and the maximum stress intensity values for Division 2 construction shall be as listed in Table 1. (2) Division 3. The yield strength values, Sy, for Division 3 shall be those shown in Table 2 of this Case. (e) For external pressure design, the following requirements shall apply: (1) Divisions 1 and 2. Use the applicable external pressure chart in Fig. CS-3 of Section II, Part D. (2) Division 3. Use KD-222 of Section VIII, Division 3. (f) Heating of the material above 1,200F during fabrication is not permitted. This does not include such local heating as cutting and welding. (g) The following requirements shall apply: (1) Division 1 Construction: Part UCS. (2) Division 2 Construction: Article M-2. (3) Division 3 Construction: Articles KM-2 and KE-2.

The Committees function is to establish rules of safety, relating only to pressure integrity, governing the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components, and inservice inspection for pressure integrity of nuclear components and transport tanks, and to interpret these rules when questions arise regarding their intent. This Code does not address other safety issues relating to the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components, and the inservice inspection of nuclear components and transport tanks. The user of the Code should refer to other pertinent codes, standards, laws, regulations or other relevant documents.
