During July we pause as a nation giving thanks for freedom.

As Christians we acknowledge with thanksgiving the freedom that Christ has given us from sin, death, and the devil. Martin Luther embraced the freedom of the cross in his life and gave thanks for what Christ truly gives yet with full knowledge that the ultimate freedom that is ours will not come until we enter the church triumphant. Martin Luther offers this thought pertaining to the true freedom a Christian embraces. We first approach the subject of the inward man, that we may see by what means a man becomes justified, free, and a true Christian; that is, a spiritual, new, and inward man. It is certain that absolutely none among outward things, under whatever name they may be reckoned, has any weight in producing a state of justification and Christian liberty, nor, on the other hand an unjustified state and one of slavery. This can be shown by an easy course of argument. Freedom of Christian, Martin Luther. By what means do we gain true freedom? Earthly rulers and governments have failed to provide inward freedom. On a relative scale freedom in our nation has become a hallmark of who we are and our charge to the world greater. In such that freedom is the mark of a civil and orderly society and the duties of this nation is to preserve, protect, and ensure that those seeking such freedom have the means to whatever the cost. Yet in this we see only relative and limited freedom. None of the outward things no mater how great they are can provide lasting inward freedom such as what is given through the sacrificial liberating death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The state of justification (being made right and forgiven of our sins completely) and true freedom comes through a process of self examination, confession, and hearing the absolution of our sins from the pastor or lay presider in the divine service. To hear from them is to hear from the lips of Christ our Savior that our sins are truly forgiven and we like the prodigal son can run into the arms of our blessed Savior Jesus who bids us to come unto him. So when we consider true lasting freedom do we accept the limited and earthly bond definition of what liberty is or the explosive love and unlimited freedom that Christ gives to us sinners who are in need of his everlasting grace? Blessed of the Father come to services this month and hear of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for all sinners. Hear of the lasting freedom that Jesus gives to all and the unconditional welcome that bids our hearts to leave our lives of sinful rebellion and find grace and favor in the embrace of God our heavenly Father. Peace to you in the season of Pentecost! Pastor Kris L. Snyder
