basin modelling

Predicting petroleum generation and migration in your prospects

GNS Science uses an integrated and rigorous scientific approach to deliver a comprehensive predictive model of all elements of basin evolution and petroleum systems.
We can build you a 1D, 2D, or full 3D model, allowing high-resolution simulation of migration routes and prediction of charge, phase and volume in your prospects. With expert assessment of fault and top seal efficiencies, overpressure analysis and stress quantification, migration pathways can be accurately predicted. Our advanced analysis techniques used to identify biomarker distributions and isotopic compositions allow us to characterise oils and natural gases, including paleo-fluids from inclusions. This offers you greater understanding of migration - and delivers a rigorously constrained predictive model. We are highly experienced in using 2D and 3D seismic-reflection data to determine sediment architecture, fault geometries, displacement patterns and strain estimates. Using fault analysis, we can reconstruct past configurations of your prospect; and assess the sealing potential of faults at basin and reservoir scale. With GNS Science, you can gain insight into petroleum generation and migration in your exploration area, understand risks in your petroleum systems, and quantify prospectivity.

at a glance
State-of-the-art We use industryleading modelling software suites from IES PetroMod and Zetaware. We develop our own fast multidimensional models. Integrated Basin modelling projects can be integrated with a wide range of skills, from seismic interpretation to reservoir quality studies. This assures the best possible input and calibration data for modelling. Rigorous Our models are built on the scientific excellence of experienced staff and thoroughly calibrated with available geochemical and petrophysical data. Innovative BASSIM, our in-house basin modelling software, is continually evolving. This provides fast and robust Monte Carlo risking of generated volumes.

Expertise to help you maximise the opportunities

They have the database - they have done the work. They provide knowledge of the Basin. We could get the analysis done elsewhere but interpreting the data is the tricky bit. We need people who understand the area.

about us
The Basin Modelling team has delivered dozens of predictive modelling studies for major industry clients in a dozen countries worldwide. Our team is headed by Rob Funnell, who has over 20 years experience in petroleum systems analysis. We can advise on mapping and data integration to provide robust input data for models. We will develop analytical geochemical schemes to ground-truth our predictive models. We can integrate our modelling results into overall prospect ranking schemes.
