Fred Wang P1 Night: 66-85 1. What did the men in the camp do on the eve of Rosh Hashanah?

Why was this ironic? The men congregate for a massive prayer. It is ironic because God has yet to answer any of their prayers yet, yet they continue to devote themselves to Him as noted by Elie. 2. Explain the significance of this line said by Elie: Blessed are Thou, Eternal, Master of the Universe, who chose us from among the races to be tortured day and night, to see our fathers, our mothers, our brothers, end in the crematory (74). It exemplifies Elies anger towards God as he is in disbelief that he must still submit himself to God, even though God chose Elie and his people to be the victims of the cruelest mass extermination in human history. 3. Why does Elie direct his anger toward God rather than the Germans? What does his anger suggest about the depths of his faith? Elie directs his anger towards God because it is the last day of the Jewish year. Everyone around him is devoted to God and prays to God, but Elie is angered that God has yet to rescue them from their imprisonment. It demonstrates that Elie is not a devout Jewish person, and it is easy for him to doubt the doctrine of his religion. 4. What is selection? How, according to the Head of the block, should the men in the camps prepare for it? Selection is when the German officials separate those who are still healthy enough to work from those who are no longer able to. The latter are delivered to the crematorium. According to the Head of the block, the men should prepare by running as fast as they could to make them seem healthy and strong. 5. Why does Elie describe himself as afraid of having to wish his father a happy New Year? He no longer sees the upcoming year as one that is happy. 6. Why did Elie detest the ringing of bells? He detests the ringing of bells because the bell regulated Elies entire life controlling everything he did. 7. Who was Dr. Mengele? What was significant about him?

Dr. Mengele was a German physician who infamously conducted the most inhumane medical experiments on Jewish inmates of concentration camps. He was a cray mofo who deserves to rot because of what he did. 8. What were some of the benefits about the camp hospital? The benefits of the camp hospital included better food, no more bell, no more roll call, and no more work. 9. Why was Buna evacuated? The Russian army was close to the camp. 10. What was ironic about Elies decision to evacuate with his father? Elie later learned, after the war, that the Russians liberated the remaining Jewish people from the camp two days after Elie and his father evacuated. 11. Was the decision to leave the right choice? Is it an example of a choiceless choice? The decision obviously was wrong, in retrospect. Yes, which is an interesting way of putting it, as they had the choice of either staying or evacuating.
