Spreadsheet Overview of "Profile_Benchmark Calculator Short Form.

"
This spreadsheet is designed to help your system develop a disinfection profile and benchmark as required by the Long Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT1ESWTR). This spreadsheet will automatically calculate the weekly log inactivation, average monthly log inactivation, and disinfection benchmark for both Giardia lamblia and viruses as achieved by your facility. The spreadsheet has been designed to calculate the log inactivation provided by your system's treatment train based on various operating parameters (e.g., rate of flow, type of disinfectant, temperature, etc.). This report may assist you in determining whether a change in treatment process will benefit or adversely impact your ability to meet the disinfection requirements of the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR). Note that you must determine the log inactivations of ALL treatment segments and not just those that are used for compliance with the SWTR. This spreadsheet is designed for systems that have only one disinfection segment with one treatment stage in the disinfection segment. Systems with multiple disinfection segments or treatment stages need to use the other spreadsheet entitled, "Profile_Benchmark Calculator Long Form." In order for this spreadsheet to run properly, macros MUST be enabled in Microsoft Excel. To successfully complete this spreadsheet, you need only enter the appropriate data for your system in the blue highlighted cells in columns F through L. The baffling factor must be entered in column I. Values for Columns H-L (residual conc., pH, etc.) must be entered for every week. The values in the remaining cells are automatically calculated by the spreadsheet. The example below demonstrates how a system with one disinfection segment consisting of one treatment stage, such as a clearwell, would enter data into the spreadsheet for the first three weeks of sample collection. Systems using ozone as a disinfectant with certain configurations may not be able to use this spreadsheet. Ozone systems with co-current or counter-current flow in the first (or only) chamber typically receive a credit of 0.50 log Giardia inactivation for the first chamber if the effluent ozone concentration is greater than 0.3 mg/L. These systems also typically receive a credit of 1.0 log virus inactivation for the first chamber if the effluent ozone concentration is greater than 0.1 mg/L. However, this spreadsheet does not address ozone system configurations and does not use this method for calculating log inactivation. For more information on calculating log inactivation for systems using ozone, refer to Example D-3 in Appendix D of the LT1ESWTR Disinfection Profiling and Benchmarking Technical Guidance Manual (EPA 816-R-03-004, 2003).

This spreadsheet restricts values for pH, temperature, and chlorine residual concentration to those values included in the CT tables in the LT1ESWTR Disinfection Profiling and Benchmarking Technical Guidance Manual . If values are entered outside of these ranges, one of the following error messages will occur: "check pH", "check temp", or "check residual". The "check residual" error message occurs if the free chlorine concentration entered is greater than 3.00 mg/L. The "check residual" error message is accompanied by the "Contact State" error message, indicating that you should contact your State if your system uses a free chlorine residual concentration greater than 3.00 mg/L to determine the Giardia log inactivation achieved by your system.

Background Information and System Specifications

This spreadsheet will automatically determine the log inactivation of Giardia cysts by your system during peak hourly flow based on the following formulas: Giardia log Inactivation = 3 x CTcalc / CT99.9 The CT99.9 calculations for free chlorine use a complex interpolating polynomial which correctly reproduces virtually all of the CT table values for chlorine achieving a coefficient of correlation of .99999. Calculated values vary less than the instruments used to gather the data used in the calculations. Please see the User's Guide for more information on how this polynomial was generated. The CT99.9 calculations for chloramines, chlorine dioxide, and ozone are performed using mathematical representations of the CT tables contained in the LT1ESWTR Disinfection Profiling and Benchmarking Technical Guidance Manual . The algorithm calculates values between those in the CT tables, eliminating the need for interpolation. These calculations correlate with the CT table values exactly. Please see the User's Guide for more information on how the algorithm was generated. The interpolating polynomial for calculating CT99.9 for Giardia lamblia inactivation by chlorine and the algorithm for calculating CT 99.9 for chloramines, ozone, and chlorine dioxide were developed by Russell J. Topham with the Utah Division of Drinking Water as part of his work with water treatment processes under the Surface Water Treatment Rule. This spreadsheet will also automatically determine the log inactivation of viruses by your system during peak hourly flow based on the following formulas: Virus log Inactivation1,2 = 4 x CTcalc / CT99.99 CT calculation for 4-log Virus inactivation (CT99.99) is performed using mathematical representations of the tables contained in the LT1ESWTR Disinfection Profiling and Benchmarking Technical Guidance Manual . The algorithm calculates values between those in the CT tables, eliminating the need for interpolation. These calculations correlate with the CT table values exactly. Please see the User's Guide for more information on how the algorithm was generated. The algorithm for calculating CT99.99 for chlorine, chloramines, ozone, and chlorine dioxide was developed by the Cadmus Group, Inc. The methods used were adapted from methods developed for 3-log Giardia lamblia inactivation (CT99.9) by Russell J. Topham with the Utah Division of Drinking Water as part of his work with water treatment processes under the Surface Water Treatment Rule. For more information on data entry and use of this program, the User's Guide can be accessed by clicking the "Help" tab located at the bottom of the screen (last tab after the "Virus Profile" tab). You will need Microsoft Word to access the User's Guide. NOTES: 1. Testing has shown that the method used in this spreadsheet and in the LT1ESWTR Disinfection Profiling and Benchmarking Technical Guidance Manual (Virus Log Inactivation = 4 x CTcalc / CT99.99) is inaccurate for chlorine dioxide. At inactivation levels significantly less than 4 logs this method of calculation underestimates the log inactivation by as much as 1 to 2 logs. At inactivation levels significantly greater than 4 logs this method overestimates the log inactivation by 1 to 2 logs or more. 2. Check with your Primacy Agency to see if this method is acceptable for calculating virus log inactivation.
