Working Together To Preserve Our Legacy Conserve, Preserve, Restore, Educate

During the next two years, we will focus on: Preserving our Legacy by planting Trees Native to Virginia Trees represent hope for the future. What better way to commemorate and rededicate' our VFGC efforts than to plant trees. They are the foundation to our landscapes and provide balance in our eco-system protecting and conserving our natural resources. A Presidents Project will support this project by giving special Awards to clubs for plantings on Public or Historic properties. A special promotion will help fund this project through the sale of tumblers with a VFGC logo. Beautifying and Restoring in our Communities Our clubs have long been noted for the beautification programs they have had a part in throughout Virginia. A new grant program will provide clubs the opportunity to receive support for their projects with awards given this fall. Clubs - make plans and apply by the September 15 deadline. Continuing our Stewardship with Youth The Youth Grants program have a September 15 deadline. In addition to this, we will work on building other youth programs in our schools or other youth organizations. Continuing to better serve YOU - our Members and to promote interest in VFGC by offering our popular Flower Show and Landscape Design Schools and Flower Show Symposia as well as other programs that educate and encourage individual creativity. I urge you to Be Good Neighbors share interesting programs with other clubs and help keep others in the know; visit the NGC and VFGC websites often; partner with other clubs or organizations to present seminars or workshops; continue to participate in community events to build visibility and attract new members. Members, wont you join me in Working Together to Preserve Our Legacy? I wish you a beautiful growing summer.

YOUR NEW VFGC OFFICERS 2013 - 2015

Meet the President Marilyn Mason: Following Marilyns move to the Lake of the Woods community in 1991, the idea of nurturing the beauty of the natural setting quickly became a new-found vocation. Voila! The Garden Club supported that interest and what followed, in addition to building a new home there, has been a continuum of responsibilities and interest in the realm of garden and community beautification-related interests. Marilyn has been a member and former President of the Lake of the Woods Garden Club and former President of Shenandoah District. Since 2007, she has served as VFGC Treasurer, Second and First Vice Presidents. She completed Landscape Design Schools and became a Landscape Design consultant and has enjoyed attending Flower Show Schools and Symposia and the National Garden Club conventions. Her working career in Northern Virginia was in human resources management at The MITRE Corporation during which time she completed a Master of Science degree in Human Resources Management from American University. Marilyn and her husband, Bill, enjoy travelling, cruising, gardening, and their large family gatherings at home. Her interest in planting trees as a major focus for this administration was to restore and protect Virginias natural resources the depletion of which in many areas has suffered from significant storm damage. The ODG front cover displays the logo for the 2013-2015 administration and symbolizes the focus for the next two years. Meet the First Vice-President Janice Clem Janice has been involved in garden club activities since 1983 when she joined LaBellevue Garden Club in Roanoke. She served as the clubs president, treasurer, and recording secretary. In 2001, she joined
ODG Summer 2013 Page 4 of 36

Westchester Garden Club and has served as president, recording secretary, treasurer, historian, and newsletter editor. Janice has served on the Blue Ridge District Board of Directors for over twenty years including a term as the districts president. For VFGC, she has served on the Board of Directors since 1991 and has held the offices of Second Vice-President, Third Vice-President, Treasurer and Corresponding Secretary in addition to serving as chairman of numerous committees. She is the 2014 South Atlantic Region Convention Chairman and served on the SAR Board as the Garden Therapy/Healing Gardens Chairman for the 2011-2013 term. She is an accredited master NGC Flower Show Judge and a former president of the Virginia Flower Show Judges Council and the Blue Ridge District Flower Show Judges Council. She is a life member of NGC, VFGC and Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs. Janice is a native of Martinsville and graduated from Virginia Tech where she received a BS degree in business with a major in marketing management. Following college, she moved to Roanoke where she worked for Xerox as a senior sales representative. She is a member of Bonsack Baptist Church where she enjoys serving on the Flower Committee and Compassion Committee. She and her husband, Terry, have two daughters, Jennifer and Jessica and a son-in-law, John. She attributes her interest in gardening to her mother and grandmothers, all of whom had a green thumb and passed along their enjoyment and love of flowers, gardening, and nature. Meet the Second Vice-President Marty Bowers Marty was born in Illinois but has lived in Georgia and Virginia with the majority of her life spent in Virginia. Marty has worked in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon, General Services Administration, and The Mitre Corporation in Northern Virginia. She has also served as Church Organist and Music Director at a northern Virginia Church and organist for a funeral home. Only after her husband, Bert, retired and
ODG Summer 2013 Page 5 of 36

they moved to Smith Mountain Lake did her schedule allow her to become involved with Garden Clubs and other volunteer organizations. Marty's background and education are in the field of accounting, which she has been called upon many times to help out volunteer organizations. She is currently treasurer of the Smith Mountain Arts Council, Friends of the Library and her church. Marty also was chairman of the Smith Mountain Charity Home Tour for many years raising funds for charity organizations. An invitation to join the Moneta Garden Club in 1996 opened up a whole new world for her. Marty has served as Treasurer, Second Vice President - Membership, published the Yearbook since 1997 and has edited the newsletter for the past six years. She has served at the District level as Book Review Chairman, Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer before being elected as President. At the state level, Marty worked on the committee with Nancy Hargroves and Judy Binns on the 501(c)(3) group exemption and has served on the VFGC Finance Committee as an appointed member for six years, the last two as audit chairman. Marty has finally found time in her busy schedule to complete the VFGC Landscape Design School. Marty and her husband have two sons; one in California and one in Maryland which means they travel from coast to coast to go sailing with them. Meet the Third Vice-President Elizabeth Lester My gardening skills prior to leaving my home economics teaching position in the Richmond area and moving to Southwest Virginia consisted of a few "tried and true" house plants. However, when my mother, who was an avid gardener came to visit us, (me, my husband and my son) in Southwest Virginia she helped foster my gardening skills. My mother shared plants from her own garden, but the growing zone of Tidewater where I grew up was far different from the growing zone of Southwest Virginia! The crepe myrtle, gardenia, and rooted camellias she helped me plant were not very happy in Southwest Virginia.

ODG Summer 2013 Page 6 of 36

Since those plants I had loved growing up did not flourish in my new location, I needed additional gardening education. I wanted like many of you to "hone" my gardening skills and have fellowship with others who shared my gardening enthusiasm. I was invited to join a garden club! Through the years as a garden club member, I have enjoyed my club and district friendships and activities. I even worked with some of you through my State chairmanships. These next two years it will be my pleasure to serve in the capacity of 3rd Vice President of VFGC. I hope I can depend upon you to join me in promoting membership in the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. VFGC has lots to offer.

Meet the Recording Secretary: Mary Sue Floyd Mary Sue Floyd has been a member of the Green Meadow Point Garden Club in Chesapeake for 40 years. She has held a variety of positions on the club, council, district, state, and regional boards, as well as serving as Registrar for the NGC Fall Board meeting when Virginia was host state. She is returning for another term as VFGC Recording Secretary. In addition to garden club activities, she enjoys her family (2 grown children & spouses and 4 grandchildren) who live nearby. She is also active on several committees at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Chesapeake.
ODG Summer 2013 Page 7 of 36

Meet the Treasurer: Claudia Cosby Claudia has been married for fortythree years and has four grown children and six grandchildren, all of whom live in Virginia. She joined Salisbury Garden Club in 1992 and, over the years, held many board positions including serving as their president. She also chaired awards, civic beautification, and was publisher of their newsletter and yearbook for four years. Piedmont District duties have included Recording Secretary, Treasurer, and Awards among others. Claudia has also served VFGC as ODG Ad Manager, Awards Chairman, and is their current Treasurer. She is also a member of the Commonwealth Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. In the late 1990s she returned to college where she obtained her Associate and Bachelors degrees. She has worked in banking, real estate sales, and, while in school, she served as a teaching assistant and student tutor. In her spare time she enjoys gardening, genealogy, and needlework.

SPECIAL PROJECT TO SUPPORT THE NGC'S 2013 - 2015 PRESIDENT'S THEME MAKNG A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE - CHOICES MATTER
The 2013-2015 President's Two-Year Special Project, "Making A World of Difference - Choices Matter" will open new doors for in-depth and creative learning, and educational opportunities centered on the natural resources of planet earth - our air, water, forest, land and wildlife. It is important that NGC members promote education as the "Key" in making responsible decisions for today and tomorrow. The Special Project is divided into States and Club categories for awarding purposes and both will have equal opportunities to participate. Through generous grants, NGC will present monetary awards and certificates recognizing outstanding achievements for projects in each named category. Book of Evidence deadline is March 31, 2015. No exceptions. STATES --- DOES IT MATTER? - EDUCATION FOR RESPONSIBLE CHOICES States are asked to promote education through workshops, speakers, seminars, articles in newsletters and using one or any combination of available learning tools that will help in educating their members and the public, in making responsible choices that will protect and conserve our natural resources - our air, water, forest, land and wildlife.

ODG Summer 2013 Page 9 of 36

CLUBS --- MAKING A DIFFERENCE PROTECTING AND CONSERVING OUR NATURAL RESOURCES AIR -- WATER -- FOREST -- LAND -- WILDLIFE Although water and air are recognized as our most essential and familiar resources, forests, lands, and wildlife are also very important concerns. NGC Garden Clubs are asked to get involved in the President's Special Project by planning and completing a project related to a local concern involving one or more natural resources. Education of both the members and community may be necessary in order to make responsible choices. Award applications and further information will be available at gardenclub.org, from Regional Directors, State Project Chairmen, or the NGC Special Project Coordinator.

Scholarship Awards for 2013-2014

The VFGC Scholarship program continues to gain interest amongst schools and students. 2012 was a fantastic Scholarship year for us; VFGC awarded $10,000.00 to 6 students attending 4 different Universities. Our SAR applicant, Chelsea Gusler, competed against the applicants from other states in the region and was awarded the Corrie Whitlock Memorial Scholarship, for 2012, and our nominee for the NGC Scholarship, Johanna Cricenti, earned that $3,500.00 award, as well! We continue to up our game in encouraging schools to help us identify the best qualified and deserving students, by contacting and sending information packets to several Virginia schools. We received 5 applications this year, competing for our VFGC Scholarships. The qualifications of each applicant matched up very nicely to our Scholarship criteria, but we were anxious that the VFGC Finance Committee would not be able to fund 5 awards in the amounts we have in the past. With low rates of interest and limited donations, requesting $2,000.00 for each Scholarship seemed out of reach. Somehow, our Finance Committee found the funds and I am excited to report that all 5 Scholarships have been awarded at $2,000.00 each for 2013!

KEYS TO THE FUTURE

ODG Summer 2013 Page 14 of 36

We proudly announce the following awards for the 2013-2014 school term: Chelsea Gusler, from Dublin, VA., a rising senior at Virginia Tech, triple majoring in Horticulture, Family Health Science and Nutrition and Bio-Chemistry, has been awarded the Presidents Horticulture Scholarship. Colleen Beard, from Vinton, VA., a rising senior at Virginia Tech, majoring in Environmental Horticulture, has been awarded the Minna D. Adams Scholarship. Emily Gibbs, from Crewe, VA., a rising Junior at University of Mary Washington, double majoring in Environmental Science and Spanish, has been awarded the Rita M. Costello Scholarship. Lucas Tyree, from Lexington, VA., a graduate student majoring in Environmental Science at Yale University, has been awarded the Thelma W. Utt Scholarship. Grey Elam, from Charlottesville, VA., a graduate student at University of Virginia, majoring in Landscape Architecture, has been awarded the Peg Grinus Landscape Design Scholarship.

The Scholarship Committee is very proud to announce that, in addition to a VFGC Scholarship, Lucas Tyree was awarded a $3,500.00 NGC Scholarship for 2013! Unfortunately, our SAR applicant, also very promising, was not selected for the Corrie Whitlock Memorial Scholarship. It is the honor of the VFGC Scholarship Committee to consider these wonderful applications and to have the ability to make these valuable awards. Please review the Winter/Spring 2013 ODG for new opportunities designed for our members to honor special people while providing funding for these extremely impactful awards. We continue to receive funding from Life Memberships and the Dogwood Society, but additional funding is needed. The next time you or your club wants to exhibit gratitude to someone special, please consider one of the donation opportunities outlined in the and give generously. What a fantastic way to honor someone, and strongly impact the life of a deserving young person, at the same time!

Thomas Jefferson Garden Club (P)

Submitted by Jane Grinnell

Thomas Jefferson GC was organized February 10, 1933 with 18 charter members. Our club has grown greatly in membership, and our accomplishments are numerous. We are proud that many of our members are serving on VFGC, Piedmont District, and Richmond Council Boards and several have risen to be president of these organizations. In addition, our club is honored to have nationally accredited and emeritus Master Judges, a Horticulture, Flower Show Procedure and Symposium Instructor, and Landscape Design Consultants in our membership. In April the club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a luncheon and a standard flower show, entitled Flashback. The theme of the flower show was carried out through songs and movie titles, flashing back to 1933 and moving forward, spotlighting each ten years. Members and guests came together at Lakewood Manor, a Retirement Community, to share memories, and to reminisce as Joann Rawls entertained us with her humorous anecdotes from our long and active history. Luncheon tables were decorated with red geraniums. The red and white head table centerpiece, designed and made by Jane and Frank Grinnell, sat on top of a baby grand piano replica and created a lot of buzz. Our guests included Joann Rawls, President of Piedmont District and Judy Hodges, President of Richmond Council were recognized by our President, Lynn Bell. Following a delightful lunch, club members, guests and Lakewood Manor residents toured our beautiful flower show, chaired by Janet Minock. There were lots of favorable comments as everyone admired the traditional, creative, and miniature flower arrangements by our members. An invitational class for judges gave us an insight into designs of the future. Even with the late snows and cool weather, members managed to coax their horticulture to full bloom and the colors were outstanding. The winner of the Award of Design Excellence was Janet Minock for her interpretation of Ironman. The winner of the Award of Horticulture Excellence was Ann Stewart in the Flowering Shrubs and Trees Section for her Azalea specimen.

Rappahannock County Garden Club (SH)

Submitted by Sylvia Garcia & Mary Ann Krammes

Rappahannock County Garden Club (RCGC) participated in the Smokey Bear/ Woodsy Owl Poster Contest for the first time. Since Rappahannock County has approximately 7200 residents, one Elementary / Middle School, and one High School, the Youth Committee decided to approach the poster contest by asking the principal and art teacher of the Elementary School to join us in the project. This enabled as many students as possible to participate in learning about preventing fires, taking care of the environment, and improving their art skills as outlined by NGC, Inc. Under the direction of the art teacher and working with the academic Standards of Learning as outlined by the State of Virginia, fourth and fifth grade students created lovely posters. The project was a success with sixty-seven students participating. Jordan Welshs poster was chosen by the Shenandoah District to represent other fourth graders from our area in the VFGCs Poster contest. Jordan received a cash price and the Rappahannock County GC received a Blue Ribbon for the project.

ARBOR DAY ACTIVITIES Teresa Adkins, Bonnie Aker, Brenda Edwards, Gigi Pippin, Merry Lu Prior, Francis Sturdavant, Beverly Viers, Sandy Yun and Martha Blackburn presented an Arbor Day program at Wise Primary School on April 26. Seven kindergarten classrooms celebrated trees while GC members read books about trees and discussed the illustrations. A maple sapling was introduced to the students to show various parts of a young tree and a maple seed was viewed to instill the idea of the key components for growing a tree. The tree saplings were planted in a small container of potting medium and watered. Students were then instructed to watch the sapling grow in their classroom.
ODG Summer 2013 Page 30 of 36

A good, fruitful discussion and interactive dialogue ensued followed by an informative question and answer session. Apple slices were used to illustrate internal seeds and the students enjoyed this gift from an apple tree. Students were instructed on how to draw an apple tree using colored crayons. On October 10, 2013 Rappahannock Garden Club (P) and David Pippin, renowned floral designer, will present:

"Bring the Gardens Indoors"

Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock beginning at 11:30 a.m. floral design demonstration, lunch and raffle are part of the afternoon. This event will support community projects. For ticket information contact program chair, Sandra Harris (804-4353384) sandraleeharis1@gmail.com.

Green Thumb Garden Club (SW)

Submitted by Carmen Cantrell

ARBOR DAY ACTIVITIES The Green Thumb GC of Norton celebrated Arbor Day by hosting several local Girl Scout Troops in a tree-planting community service project at the newly developed Healing Garden at the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center.
Approximately nine members from Girl Scout Troop 147 and Daisy/Brownie Troop 375 along with their leaders and parents arrived on Arbor Day with shovels and garden gloves. The enthusiastic scouts were quickly organized by GC member Kim Clisso, chairman of the Arbor Day Committee, who gave a lecture about the importance of trees and plants in our daily lives. Under the guidance of Club President Carmen Cantrell, the girls learned to correctly plant a young tree. We were delighted to have the Girl Scouts spend their observance of Arbor Day with us and plant a beautiful paperbark maple that will benefit current and future generations of visitors to the Healing Garden, commented President Cantrell. Its organizations like the Girl Scouts, who we hope will come back each year to participate in community service activities, that will be responsible for the future successes in this garden.

FOR THE LOVE OF BUTTERFLIES submitted by Donna Cottingham, Butterfly Chairman

If you have ever noticed that something in your herb garden seems to be devouring your dill, parsley or Eastern Black Swallowtail fennel, you may be Caterpillar inadvertently boosting the Eastern Black Swallowtail population. Butterflies are very specific about choosing the host plant on which to lay their eggs. Female Black Swallowtails will only lay eggs on dill, fennel, parsley or Queen Annes lace. Nothing else will suffice. In preparation for the task of metamorphosis, caterpillars become eating machines, and several of them together may devour an entire plant. In order to support butterflies and have enough herbs for your own use, try planting extra for sharing. If you are interested in attracting butterflies to your flower garden, plant the herbs among your flowers and watch what happens. You should be able to witness the complete butterfly life cycle in only a few weeks. Adult Eastern Black Swallowtail Butterfly
