July 2, 2013 Before It's Too Late I am writing to ask your help with a dangerous situation in West Islip.

The stretch of Udall Road between Sunrise Highway and Higbie Lane has become a very dangerous roadway with cars frequently traveling in both directions at almost twice the posted speed limit of 35 MPH. Even worse, cars will frequently perform dangerous passing maneuvers around cars which slow down to turn. To make a bad situation even worse, there are not any sidewalks on Udall Road between the intersections of Arcadia Drive and Duffin Avenue. This forces people, including children, to actually walk, ride bikes, etc... on Udall Road itself. This road has already been the scene of multiple accidents, including one in which a 15 year old young man lost his life after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle on this road. Not too long ago a traffic light was installed at the corner of Wagstaff Lane and Barberry Road after several accidents, including one in which a student was injured crossing the street at that busy intersection. This was a great moment for our community in its efforts to keep people safe while they travel our roads and sidewalks. At the time of the traffic light installation State Senator Phil Boyle said, "The safety of students who live south of Montauk Highway and travel to and from West Islip High School each day has been a top priority for me." Speaking of the student who was injured crossing there, Senator Boyle also said, "We made the point that after the near-tragedy of Christopher that we didnt want anything like this happening again." Of the Barberry traffic light Legislator Tom Barraga said, "It is important for the safety of our children that this light was installed. We have students crossing at this intersection every day to go to school and we need them to know their safety is our number one priority." We need that same kind of concern for the safety of our children and action by our elected representatives with the dangerous situation that exists on Udall Road. The safety of all residents, not just students who live south of Montauk, needs to be a top priority. I urge you to please take all necessary actions to ensure that Udall Road becomes a much safer area of our town before it is too late and someone else gets seriously injured or even killed on Udall Road. I urge you to take the steps necessary to have stop signs and/ or a traffic light installed on Udall Road at the most relevant location(s) between Sunrise Highway and Higbie Lane. I also urge you to take the necessary steps to complete the missing sidewalk so people do not have to walk directly on Udall Road when in this area. Thank you. Sincerely,

To: Barraga, Boyle, Saladino, Bellone, Simon/ Burns
