Gaining and Sustaining Attention A

1. Read Telling Time with Big Mama Cat by Dan Harper aloud. 2. Have students brainstorm a list of places where they might see a clock. 3. Watch StudyJams Step-by-Step Tell Time video (the home section of the video only) on the SMARTboard as a class, stopping to further explain concepts introduced in the video.

Enhancing Relevance R

1. Discuss with students why they need to know how to tell time. For example, to get to work on time, how long to bake a cake, etc. 2. Students will use the Jungle Time app on their iPhone or iPad as an introduction to telling time. Students without the technology will take turns using the app on the SMARTboard. 3. Have students partner into groups of two. Each pair should write a few questions starting with "When" or "What time." After everyone has written their four questions, one pair will ask another pair to answer each question using the big clock. Then, the pair that is asking the questions should ask, "What time is it thirty minutes after you have eaten your breakfast?" or "What time is it an hour after you have brushed your teeth?" 4. Prepare a large sheet of paper that has a large clock drawn on it (without the hands). Then, have students ask the questions starting with "When" or "What time." Have two students standing on the paper. One student will be the small hand, and the other will be the large hand. As one student asks a question, another student will answer, and the two students on the clock will illustrate that answer.
