Welcome

July 7 2013

Welcome to Unley Park Baptist today. It is great to have you with us. If you are new to Unley Park, we appreciate that it can be daunting to walk into a new church, so as much as we can, we want to help you feel at home here. In the pew in front of you please find a black folder that contains a white care card for you to complete. There is also a "Welcome Pack" available for you that, among other things, has a special Care Card for you to record your visit and for us to follow up any requests you make. All Care Cards should be "posted" as you leave the church, in the locked box on the table by the "Baptistry Door".

Just a Minute
I was very moved by an article I read during the week by Rebekah Lyons called, When There's Rescue and There's Not. Here is some of it.. Hope and sorrow in it all, theres rescue and theres not. The first time I heard these words, I couldnt shake them. They foll owed me around the forlorn streets during a New York winter that never seemed to end. The thought that I may never find rescue pelted me like the falling icicles. Caught in the midst of my own freefall since arriving to the city eight months prior, these words appeared a cruel joke. Id just begun putting pen to paper about my struggle with anxiety and depression. Joining a few women over poached eggs and toast at Le Pain in Midtown, our conversation turned toward what living fully might look like for wo men in the city. Someone posed a question in my direction expecting a response. Eyes brimming, I sat and stared in silence until I broke down in front of all of them. I admitted to these new friends Id been wrestling with God, overwhelmed and undone by th e magnitude of this topic. If Im not living a full life myself, how can I offer anything worth hearing? Embarrassed by the emotional outburst, I quickly finished the meal, realizing a dam was breaking that required retreat. I scurried toward Central Park with heaviness in my chest, ready to burst. I wanted to scream with no one looking to yell into the desolate winter air among the bare trees, to ask God where He was in the midst of it all. I fought back steamy hot tears dripping down my checks as my pace quickened. At one point, I shook my fists to the heavens, Why, oh why, oh why, is there rescue and theres not? I collapsed on a bench overlooking the baseball fields just past Heckscher Playground. Salty tears drying on my cheeks. Exhausted and depleted. I heard it gently: Stay. Confused, I thought of Jesus. And what must have been a horrific night in the Garden of Gethsemane the eve before he was to be killed, when he prayed on his face for hours. Perhaps Jesus sought intercession in a cold and barren garden like this Central Park setting. Perhaps he shook his own fists at God while his disciples kept nodding off a few yards away. My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me, He ordered them. Then he fell with his face to the ground, praying, Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will. Luke continues the account: An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. Stay. Stay in the freefall. Cont

Jesus knew rescue wouldnt come in the way he might have wanted it. It would not come that night in the garden. That wouldnt be the story of rescue to be told through the ages. No, this story required him to stay and yield to the pain. To stay in the place that broke his heart, because everyone around him had no idea what kind of rescue would happen three days later. Jesus conceded to his Fathers will. Not his own. Stay in the freefall. It doesnt seem like good news does it? Even in freefall we think we know how things will turn out or how they should turn out but the truth is we have no idea! Can we dare to believe that God would call us to stay? Can faith survive, even flourish in freefall? Can we even entertain such abandonment to God as we see in Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane? Yet, it is there he gives us a promise of hope unlike anything this world has ever, or will ever see. Resurrection! God Bless Neil

MLT update 17 June 2013

The Ministry Leadership Team (MLT) had an administratively focused meeting on 17 June at the church. Each of the team provided a written quarterly report for discussion. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the UPBC and Life Church budgets for 2013/14 which have recently been presented to the Church. Overall they forecast a deficit and represent a challenge for the leadership and congregation in how best to respond. MLT were very appreciative of the work of Ben Taylor who had managed the UPBC finances to this point and for the number of people who had pulled the 2013/14 budget together. The team were keen to find a treasurer to lead the finance team in the coming year. The church will be painted during the latter half of 2013 and is due to begin in September. The reports from all the members were noted - noting the highlights of the growth in the youth, children, womens, mens and outreach ministries during 2013. God is at work in many ways throughout the church ministries and its people.

Our Missionary Families

The Badger Family Tim, Bron, Stephen, Joshua, Amie, Annalise & Kaitlyn OMF, Manila, Philippines This week it's Tim's turn to work in the guest house again, relieving the new managers whilst they go on vacation. Thankfully it should be fairly quiet with only a few guests who know their way around, so Tim should be able to continue his IT Support role at the same time. We still haven't heard anything more from the embassy about the visa application which makes it hard to make decisions about whether to enrol the children in the new school year starting on 1st August or not. Please pray for wisdom and that the visa will be approved in a timely manner. We are thankful that Owen's mum's surgery went well. Please continue to pray for her recovery. Last week we were able to visit our mission headquarters in Melbourne as well as catch up with Sarah's brother and his family. This morning we are sharing at Life Church in Munno Para.
