Communication is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behavior. It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or a group of person. 2. What is speech communication? Speech communication is a process by which we assign and convey meaning in an attempt to create shared understanding. 3. What is register? Register is a tone language that uses different voice registers 4. What are the levels of register? There are 5 levels of register: a. Static Register - This style of communications RARELY or NEVER changes. It is frozen in time and content. E.g. the Pledge of Allegiance, the Lords Prayer, the Preamble to the US Constitution, the Alma Mater, a bibliographic reference, laws. b. Formal Register- This language is used in formal settings and is one-way in nature. This use of language usually follows a commonly accepted format. It is usually impersonal and formal. A common format for this register is speeches. e.g. sermons, rhetorical statements and questions, speeches, pronouncements made by judges, announcements. c. Consultative Register- This is a standard form of communications. Users engage in a mutually accepted structure of communications. It is formal and societal expectations accompany the users of this speech. It is professional discourse. e.g. when strangers meet, communications between a superior and a subordinate, doctor & patient, lawyer & client, lawyer & judge, teacher & student, counselor & client. d. Casual Register- This is informal language used by peers and friends. Slang, vulgarities and colloquialisms are normal. This is group language. One must be member to engage in this register. e.g. buddies, teammates, chats and emails, and blogs, and letters to friends. e. Intimate Register- This communications is private. It is reserved for close family members or intimate people. e.g. husband & wife, boyfriend & girlfriend, siblings, parent & children. 5. What are the types of communication? a. Verbal communication- This is the most common of the many types of communication that we all have been using for so long. Verbal means you talk to each other. Uttering words and phrases and sentences is considered a verbal communication. b. Non-verbal communication- Non speaking, no words uttered, no noise type of communication; this is how a non-verbal communication is defined. This is normally used when one is not capable to speak. May it be a temporary illness that made you lost your speech, or it can be a long term sickness that will need you to learn to communicate without the use of speech. c. Visual communication- From the term itself, it is those types of communication that is relayed to you visually. An example would be looking on a locator or directory. You use your visuals to communicate with the map or the visual ad that you see to let you know where you should go. It communicates with you as you look at it and tells you what to do and where to go. d. Written communication- Writing is also another of the types of communication. If you do not have the ability to speak and communicate by the use of your mouth and tongue, the paper and the pen will help you.

6. What is Jargon? Jargon is the technical terminology or characteristic idiom of a special activity or group 7. What is Language? Language is the human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication, and a language is any specific example of such a system. 8. What is first language, second language and foreign language? The first language (also known as native language) is the language(s) a person has learned from birth or within the critical period, or that a person speaks the best and so is often the basis for sociolinguistic identity. On the other hand, the second language is referring to is any language learned after one's first language. While the foreign language is a language indigenous to another country. 9. What is dialect? Dialect is referring to the regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech differing from the standard literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists. 10. What is argot? An argot is used by various groupsincluding, but not limited to, thieves and other criminals to prevent outsiders from understanding their conversations. 11. What is Pidgin? A pidgin is a simplified language that develops as a means of communication between two or more groups that do not have a language in common.
