nfrastructure is the great facilitator in economic growth. Unless a strong infrastructure exists in a country, fast economic growth is almost impossible. Development of infrastructure is crucial to India's growth strategy. Despite an extensive infrastructure which in several areas is amongst the largest in the world, there is considerable need for expanding facilities and improving quality. L&T, which has aligned its goals with India's, pioneered the acquiring of capabilities to develop the country's infrastructure from the very beginning, putting them to excellent use. For example, in building up the country's power infrastructure it acquired a wide range of capabilities.

Nuclear Power
Nuclear power projects are considered to be among the sustainable energy projects of the future. EGG Division has played a major role in this sector and holds the distinction of having participated in the construction of the majority of India's nuclear power plants and heavy water plants. It has the capability to construct critical and complex structures for nuclear power to exacting quality standards and has experience in construction of nuclear power projects involving civil and structural works for reactor containment structures, turbine buildings, ventilation stacks, fast breeder test reactors; mechanical and piping systems, including associated

Thermal Power
L& T is a well established player in the thermal power projects field in India. Over many decades, L& T has executed a number of major thermal power plant projects. ECC handles the construction and erection of all components of thermal power plant projects covering coal-based, oil based and gas/naphtha projects. ECC also takes up engineering and procurement of many Balance of Plant (BoP) packages, such as water and effluent treatment plants including demineralization water systems, HVAC, cooling towers, coal and ash handling systems, and switchyards. ECC has its own factories for manufacturing and supplying transmission tower components. L& T's Heavy Engineering Orders from China Total Rs. 452 Crores
.Engineering Division won its third successive , worth As. 187 crores

gasification equipment. This order from the Shenhua Group is for the world's first coal liquefaction plant built on a commercial scale. It follows earlier contracts valued at Rs. 200 crores for similar systems for fertilizer and

methanol projects in central and southern China. L& T has already supplied reactors worth Rs. 65 crores for downstream petrochemical projects in China promoted by industry leaders like BASF, BP and Shell. This brings the total value of orders secured and under execution in China to Rs. 452 crores. As part of the new contract, L& Twill design and build two sets of coal gasifiers, conforming to Shell Coal Gasification Process technology, for the plant in Mongolia in northern China. The Shenhua Group, which directly reports to the central leadership of the Chinese Government, is one of the largest energy enterprises, owning 6000 MW power generation capacity and is also the largest coal producer in the country. With rising cost of oil and natural gas, coal gasification has a promising future as a cost-effective alternative feedstock for downstream fertilizer, methanol and coal liquefaction plants.
