iPad Program 2012

Information For The Woden School Staff, Students and Parents

About this book...

Technology has the ability to empower our students in a global community that does not always support people with intellectual disabilities. The Woden School is committed to providing opportunities for its students to use IT so that they can learn independence and responsibility in a 21st Century world. We are very excited about the iPad program being run this year. Each sub school will have access to seven iPads and an iMac computer. The syncing of those devices will happen within each sub school, which means Blue, Yellow and Senior Sub Schools have control over which apps their students have access to. There are seven apps that have been preloaded onto the iPads, allowing each sub school to start using the devices straight away. However, there will be numerous other apps that they will acquire for use in the classroom. Each sub school will work out its own procedure for doing this. If you have suggestions of apps that might be useful in your sub school, contact your exec teacher. In addition to this, The Woden School will be running two iPad trials over the course of the year. Ten additional iPads have been purchased and preloaded with Proloquo2go. Selected students and their parents will be given the chance to work with teachers and speech pathologists on this program focussing on increasing our students ability to communicate not only at school and at home but in the wider community. The second trial will be assessing how the iPad engages and enables our students. Five of the apps in this booklet will be used by students in the trial to create a nished project. Video footage and written observations of each class will form the basis of the study. Apps used in this trial have been highlighted for your convenience. In order for Blue, Yellow and Senior to upload apps, they will require access to the Internet. Our iMacs are not currently connected to the student network. Instead we have been using a pre-paid WiFi device to update software and download apps onto iTunes. We are aware it is not the ideal way to access the Internet but it is currently our only option if we are to move forward with the iPads. Each sub school will need to contact the ICT Coordinator to arrange borrowing of the WiFi device when they wish to sync new apps to their iTunes account. This book has been written as a guide for staff, students and parents. It contains a list of all the apps currently being used by The Woden School, their cost and a brief description of what they do. Most apps have been placed under subject headings, but this does not mean that app is limited to that one subject area. For example, what is good for English might also be useful in Science or History. This is intended to be a growing document that is updated as the use of iPads within the school evolves. Technology is forever changing and we want our IT resources to grow with it. If you have any questions relating to the iPads or need help troubleshooting a problem please do not hesitate to contact the schools ICT Coordinator.
