5 Condition
5.1 Unless otherwise required by the order, the material shall be supplied in the appropriate condition stated below:
Designation Form Condition of supply
Black bars for machining Bright bars for machining Forging stock and billets and bars for subsequent working Forgings
Finally heat treated Finally heat treated before or after cold drawing or cold rolling or machining or grinding Softened Finally heat treated
5.2 Parts shall be supplied finally heat treated and, if appropriate, stabilized and nitrided.
6 Heat treatment
6.1 Softening treatment. The softening treatment shall consist of heating uniformly, at a temperature of not less than 700 C. 6.2 Final heat treatment 6.2.1 The final heat treatment shall consist of the following: a) Hardening. Heat at a temperature of 900 10 C, followed by cooling in oil. b) Tempering. Heat uniformly at temperature of not less than 570 C, followed by cooling in air. 6.2.2 Hardened and tempered bars which have been subjected to a cold straightening or cold rolling operation shall be given a stress-relieving treatment, which shall be sufficient to restore the proof stress. 6.3 Stabilizing treatment. The stabilizing treatment, if any, shall consist of heating at a temperature of not less than 510 C nor more than the tempering temperature. 6.4 Blank nitriding treatment. The blank nitriding treatment of the additional impact test samples shall consist of heating at a temperature of 500 10 C for not less than 24 h.
