REPORT ON THE TRAINING MODULE

This is the first time I am attending a training module. And I was overwhelmed by the way we got trained by those seniors. The training module uses up four full days with both theory and practical session. Mostly the theory sessions were in the morning and the practical session was in the afternoon. Apart from getting trained we had fun. I being a mechanical junkie who loves meddling with things had some serious fun. We learnt a lot of things. Before the training module I thought welding, grinding, cutting (all basic fabrication operation) are very easy to perform but it was not so. We had our tough time. The following is the report on what exactly we did as an individual and as a team. INTRODUCTION This report is on the training module is prepared by the seniors in the camber racing fraternity. A really informative, professional and fun mixed classes. The seniors who handled the classes were really strong about the technical stuff in their respective areas. The training module was for four days. First day we had a theory session on welding and on the very same day we had some practical training on the grinding and cutting tools also on the welding machine, second day we were taught about grinding, cutting and few parts about material technology (morning it was theory session and after noon we were asked to make a wishbone), third day was on basic sub systems namely brakes, steering and suspension. Fourth day of our training module we learnt about the remaining subsystems. Those were power train, chassis and electrical system.

In the mean time we were also given some practical training on welding and cutting on the first two days. There were assignments given along with this training module and some tests too. Day 1 First day of module on welding was taught by Rahul and Aman. On the first day we were briefed about basically three types of welding namely arc, MIG and TIG welding. After this teaching session we were given a surprise test. I did really well in the test but the results were not yet out so we I will keep my fingers crossed. Then we were given an assignment related to welding operations. The assignment is how to convert arc welding to TIG welding set up. For the second half we went to the fabrication bay they said about the basic rules to be followed while in the lab and the dress code so and so on. After that we were given a task. We should cut pieces of metal from the scrap which was there we have to cut it, grind it, and then we have to weld under the guidance of Rahul. It was like recalling the workshop classes. It felt very good Day 2 In the morning session of the day we were given a brief introduction about cutting operations by Harshin, I got a basic idea about cutting, the tool used and the life of the tool and few other tool parameters. We also came to know about the nomenclature of the tool. Since I was very new to material technology it was not a cake walk for me. To be honest one has remember a lot of things in order to know more about these tools. This is what I have learnt from this briefing. We were given assignment related to this topic by handling to have a practical session.

person, when I first submitted the assignment he spotted it with some errors which I corrected and sent him back. Harshin did his part very well. He was clear with what he said. Since the topic very dry I found thid day of training module a bit boring. But this has nothing to do with Harshin. It is the topic. Followed by Harshin, Abinav gave his briefing about grinding operations. We were taught about grinding operation and the functioning of a grinder. After the session I was very clear with the purpose of grinding. At the end of the theory session we were given assignment to make up a report on four materials used as abrasives. This was given by Abinav. Harshin also gave an assignment. We have to find an effective and a feasible way to cut the impact attenuator. Now the fun part begins. The second half we went to the college workshop. From the given materials we have to make our own wishbone for a car. After finishing it we were assessed and evaluated. Basically we were asked to cut a pipe into three pieces, make angle cutting on two of them and weld it. I really loved every bit of this session. I made the angle cutting with proper clearance angles. In welding we were guided by the lab faculty. In the beginning I welded the pipes like how we weld for two plates. but I made a hole in the pipe. Then I reduced the voltage and slowly filled the hole step by step. After that we filed the wishbone that we made. This makes the presentation very neat. I finished the very quickly and I left. And I heard that Rahul was very happy with my performance.

Day 3 This day we were given a basic idea about three subsystems. They are Brakes, Steering and suspension. This day was the best of four days of training module First we finished with Brakes. This was handled by Rahul. This session gave us a basic idea about brake working, the parts in a braking system and FSAE restrictions with respect to brakes. We were also taught about the factors with which we can play. This session gave me clear insight about braking. Previously I thought it was another application of Pascals law. But now I came to know about all the parameters involving in the working of braking unit. We were given an assignment. It is we have to find about the various parameter of the tyre that affects braking. I did give a very mediocre performance. The second topic we covered is steering. This part was handled by Abinav and he did a clean job. We learnt about basic steering components, parameters governing the steering action and type of steering action. We were also given an assignment. The assignment is about the types of steering set up. He also gave one more assignment about cutting tools. And finally came the suspension part. This is the part which I like the most. Ratna took this part. He first gave the briefing about the basics of the suspension setup in the car and how does the action of this suspension govern the vehicle dynamics. He also taught us about the other components governing the vehicle dynamics. This session was kind of a crash course on vehicle dynamics. We came to know the importance of vehicle dynamics in a car. Later we were given an assignment on various parameters of vehicle dynamics. In

addition to that we were given a number of technical terms for which we have to find the meanings and definition. Day 4 This is the last day of our training module. On this day we were briefed about electrical systems, chassis and drivetrain. Electrical system was handled by Rahul. He did give a clean insight on what exactly is in our car. He struggled a bit here and there since his background is mechanical department. He gave a presentation of the system. We came know the various electrical components used in our car, their applications. We also taught about the importance of a safety switch. We were also briefed about the electrical system used in LJM 02. Followed by Rahul we had Raj next. In the class we were told about drivetrain and chassis. He taught us about the very basics of chassis. We came to know about the importance of a chassis. He also gave us the idea about the chassis of the last years car which had excess of cross members. Followed by these sessions we were given a rule book test, which is the real hard one. Since I did not start reading the rule book I had a hard time facing the question paper. Then in the second half we had another test. The questions were about the things we learnt in these four days and about the assignments that were given. I did a great job in this test. CONCLUSION Overall I liked the professionalism in the seniors. The way the recruited people and the training that was given to them was very transparent. The

training module did help us pushing our limits. It was in such a way that one of the recruits resigned the third day of the training.
