Commanders Corner
Joe Fleming, FC 12-8 The sun is out and the heat is up. This year is moving fast, by the time this newsletter reaches every one May will have arrived. Boat shows are behind us now. Thanks to a lot of hard work by Tom Jerussi it was a great show for us. I also want to thank all our members for their hard work and support. We cant do this with out you. The tall ships are coming to Charleston soon, we have been asked to help if we can. Any one interested contact Tom Jerussi. Sector Charleston will be making some changes soon in our operations. We will be working for Station instead of Sector. Commander Williams will fill us in on it at our next meeting. There is not much change in our Flotilla boat, still awaiting paper work from DIRAUX. We will use it for display at the Air Force Base Air Expo on April 26. Operational Facilities are needed for our operations; we have only 3 in working order as of this date. Richardss boat is out of town for a year, and Bob Lovingers is under repair. If anyone wishes to set there boats up for OPS let Hap or me know. We can

he word Uniform comes from two Latin words. Unus, meaning one and Forma, meaning form; therefore, uniform means one form. Webster defines the adjective as: always the same and the noun as: the official or distinctive clothing worn by members of a particular group. I would gather from this that there is no latitude for individualism in a uniform. Although the Auxiliary is not a military organization, we are accorded the privilege of wearing the uniform of the United States Coast Guard. I grant you that there are subtle differences. To the average citizen, they are too subtle to discern. When you appear in public in that uniform you are the Coast Guard.. The public does not differentiate between us, the Reserve and the Active Duty sides. When you choose to wear that uniform in any way other than the prescribed manor you bring discredit on all the men and women who have proudly worn it for over two hundred years. One of the most often seen discrepancies seems to be the wearing of nonuniform jackets with the uniform. Authorized outerwear includes the wooly pully which is the sweater designed to be worn with shoulder boards but without name tag or other adornments. It may be purchased from the base exchange or the Uniform Distribution Center in Cape May, NJ. You may also wear the windbreaker with the removable lining. This is available from the Charleston Air Force Base uniform sales facility. It is more expensive but more versatile. Leather jackets, blue nylon windbreakers, and other assorted jackets are not acceptable. Bob Mathewes, ADSO-MT(N) D7

e had an event in April that was unusual. The South Carolina State Guard (SCSG) had an exercise whereby they occupied Drum Island in anticipation of an attack. After they " dug in ", the patrol from 12/8 tried to detect them on the Island. We circled Drum Island and observer two or three members of the Guard. However; observation with binoculars on a moving boat is not easy. Did the object in view move or did you move? After one trip around the island we departed and returned an hour later to find the exercise aborted due to stormy weather. Our new crew class has started with six members. Six trainees is the maximum for on the water training in that it requires a crew of three plus three trainees in a relatively small boat. It is not easy to move around quickly for Man Over Board and Side and Stern Tow. We expect six new crewmembers this Fall. All crews who were involved with the movement of the barge loaded with four container cranes remember how many false starts we had during their movement around the port and getting them underway to Nigeria. Well, finally on Sunday, 20 Apr, unannounced to us, our patrol found them outbound in the harbor. We tagged along since the CG boat seemed to have their hands full keeping small boats away from the barge. We escorted them to the outer jetty and wished them a safe voyage. For their skills and effort the crew of Richard Daniel's OPFAC received the Auxiliary Achievement Award. They are Frank Leister, Bobby Baker, Eric Kilpatrick and Joe Fleming. Richard received the Award of Operational Merit. Congratulations again on a job well done. Patrol dates for May are 4,10,18 and 24. The 24th is during Memorial Day observation. WE NEED CREWS!! CALL ME! Hap James, SO-OP

f FSO-PB Mathewes can squeeze it in you will find a chart listing all those who logged hours so far in 2008. (See page 9) Those hours logged are listed in specific categories. Please use this as an audit device. Look to see if the hours you turned in are reflected in this report. If they are not, email your concerns to me at 128fsois@gmail.com. Paul Berka noticed a discrepancy which we chased down. This is the only way to assure you are getting credit for your participation. Waiting until you are listed as uncertified in you specialty next year is fraught with danger. By that time, getting your activity posted and saving your certification is difficult and not always successful. The annual member letter was distributed at the April meeting. This letter is a one page summary of everything you did last year and your status with the Auxiliary. FC Fleming has those not distributed. If you want yours, ask him for it at the next meeting. Those of you who participated in the boat show events should complete a 7030 Mission Report. FSO-PA Tom Jerrusi attempted to do this for you for the last two events but it is a near impossible job. Do your own and email to me at 128fsois@gmail.com. If you need further consulting on this, email your questions too. This just came down and is important to you who have access to AUXDATA which I hope is everyone or how else will you be able to check your record. s reported in April's membership meeting we have paid our big bill for dues to the Division/ District and have a substantial cash balance. The year is too young to accurately determine if we are on budget or not. IBM approved and mailed a check to the Association for $900. It has been received and deposited. This grant supports buying a remote controlled search light and a GPS Map device for the Flotilla's facility. Frank Leister, FSO-FN

In case you have not heard we are experiencing a growth explosion. There is opportunity galore for everyone. As we enter the boating season we must remind ourselves of our call to duty as Americas Volunteer Lifesavers. In case you missed the Division Meeting on 4/12/08, The GOLD SIDE and SILVER SIDE of the Coast Guard has been dismissed. It has been replaced with TEAM COAST GUARD. THERE ONLY REMAINS ONE TEAM TO FULLFILL MANY MISSIONS. Your participation and support is needed. Whether its manning a booth at a Boat Show, Vessel Inspection, Dealer Visitation, Teaching or on a Patrol, You are greatly needed and your work can make a huge difference. Now more than ever it is very important to conduct ourselves with Professionalism, and Dedication to our mission. We must strive to serve not only the Boating Public but also each other and our new members. We will have 6 or 7 new members in uniform shortly in our ranks and I need everyone to step up and help with the proper training and acclimation of these new personnel. We need to get them up to speed ASAP.
SERVING PROUDLY. AGAIN,

TCT Class Notice I have set 14 June at 0900 for the next class and it will be held at Flotilla Island, Lake Murray Station. The uniform of the day will be civilian casual and bring your own lunch as we will take only a short lunch break right there on the island in order to get you home at a decent time. This will be a class made up of new members and members needing a refresher. Lastly, this class will be the last one that I schedule until up in the Fall, so if you have members, particularly new members, who need the class, let's get them signed up.

he Charleston In-Water Boat Show (17-20 April) is now behind us. We had three and one-half days of beautiful weather, but public attendance at the show was poor by previous standards. There were many competing events in Charleston during that time and changes in the administration for the show may have prevented some large boat dealers from attending. We only signed-up 16 individuals for vessel safety checks and 15 more for safe boating classes. Only 13 flotilla members handled all of the show's 29 hours. Hopefully, next time we will get more (and different) volunteers. Thanks to all the volunteers. As stated at the last flotilla meeting all show volunteers will be responsible for submitting their own 7030 forms. The mission on the form is public affairs with the code of 10B. Nautical Trivia
Last months question was to name the only person known to have survived the slinkings of the RMS Titanic and, her sister ship, the Britannic. Five people came up with the correct response. They were Reggie Hollar, Bob Lovinger, Dick McLaren, John Sikes and Agnes Wright. Congratulations to them all for identifying Violet Constance Jessop.

counts will be deactivated in 45 days of inactivity instead of 90 days, which it is set currently. The timeline for completion is 30 June 2008; we intend to have this completed by 15 May 2008. I will be out of the country from April 24 to May 13 without access to the Internet. Send your forms and questions in as usual but be patient waiting for them to show up in AUXDATA. Frank C. Leister, FSO-IS
(VFC, Continued from page 1)

You would think that surviving two major maritime disasters would be enough for anyone but Miss Jessop returned to the sea and continued until her retirement in 1950. She died in 1971. Her biography, Titanic Survivor, is still available. Sixty-six years ago, this month, the Chief of Naval Operations, ADM Ernest J. King, ordered the Coast Guard Auxiliary to organize into a anti-submarine patrol force, for service along the east coast. This Fleet was made up primarily of private yachts, crewed by their owners, and converted for ASW use. This fleet was officially known as The Coastal Pickett Patrol. It was also know by a more colorful designation. They even had a emblem which used a Walt Disney character decked out as a pirate. What was the unofficial name of this Anti-submarine Warfare group and what Disney Character adorned its em-

booth, talking to interested folks, offering classes, vessel examinations, and answering questions. It was not very busy so I was able to walk around the showfor free and look at the boats on sale. If I wished, I could board these boats and see what was being offered & imagine having a new boat. In this way a new boat was also free, even if I could not drive it away from the dock. So, how about you? Want a free ticket to a boat show? I think there is one this Fall & certainly another in January. For the price of dusting off your uniform & driving to the show site, you too can get free entry. See ya there? Bob Lovinger, VFC
