WFTYMETAT HATIDE?
Unquestionably, Venture's focus has been on the development of metal halide lamp technology. 0f the lighting
technologies available today, why has Venture put almost all of its resources behind this one? The answer to this question
=T
lies in the attributes of the metal halide lamp and the user features this technology offers. There are seven primary advantages of metal halide: white light, high efficiency, compact size, long life, versatility, user comfort, and positive environmental impact.
Standard metal halide lamps produce white light with a color temperature of 4000' Kelvin and a Color Rendering lndex (Cru; from 65 to 70. This color rendition is superior to the fluorescent cool white lamp, long the standard for commercial indoor lighting. Metal halide lamps can also be designed to provide colors from 3000'Kelvin (incandescent lighD to 5000"* Kelvin (natural daylight) with CRI's up to
90.
0
Metal halide lamps produce light 3 to 5 times more efficiently than incandescent lamps. They are the most
efficient white light source available. When you combine this
feature with the other benefits of metal halide, it clearly is the standard against which the other lighting technologies
should be measured.
The small size of the metal halide arc tube allows for the design of very compact lamps. A 100 watt metal halide lamp g p of less than I inch produces the same light with an ^rc an 84 inch long high output cool white fluorescent output as lamp. Smaller lamps mean smaller luminaires with better control, allowing the lighting designer to put light where it is
most needed.
f
Photograph by Vance Roth,VRA Photography
Most discharge lamps have the inherent advantage of long life relative to their incandescent counterparts. Metal halide is no exception with lives ranging from 3,000 to 20,000 hours. Long life rneans fewer replacement lamps and less relamping labor over the life of the installation. In order to provide the same lumen hours over the life of one MH100/U, you would need 45-100 watt incatrdescent light
bulbs.
Metal halide lamps can be usecl indoors or outdoors equally well. \pical temperature extrenres have no inrpact on perfornrance. Metal halidc lanrps are also available in a wicle range of wattages (5tl t0 1650 watts) and lumen packages (3ttOO to 180,000 lut'netts), making tltcm useful over tlte widest possible range of applications.
Metal halide lamps provide the user with an efficient white light source which most people prefer over the yellow of high
pressure sodium or the blue-green of clear mercury, Because the source is efficient, it produces substantially less heat than incandescent lamps for a given light level. The reduction in heat from the lighting reduces the amount of
energy required to cool the lighted space.
level in a space for considerably less energy than that required by an incandescent systenr. Less energT required for lighting means less gencration of electricity. This in turn means less consumptiott of our dwindling supplies of fossil fl,rels and less smokestack ernissiotrs from our power plants. Nl in all, use of rnetal halidc larnps instead of irrcandescent will help us to improve our envircnment.

Ratings are averages based on photometry at rated lamp watts-at 40o/o of average life for lamps operated on typical commercial ballasts at 10 burning hours per start (except as noted). Lumen values of universal and vertical lamps are measured in the vertical burning position, while horizontal lamps are measured in the horizontal burning position.

0n commercial metal halide ballasts, lamp wattage tends to rise slightly throughout lamp life; therefore, actual mean lumens of lamps in service on typical commercial ballasts are higher than rated mean lumens. will be shortened.
