VENTURE LIGHTING

INTERNATIONAL

Positioned For The 90's

Venture Lighting International, Inc. believes the decade of the 90's will be one of the most significant and exciting times for
energy efficient

lighting. Our efforts over the past two years

have

been to position our c0mpany to take full advantage of the opportunities which we believe will be presented during this
decade.

The 90's will represent some unique challenges to people in both their personal and professional lives. There will be renewed emphasis on environmental concerns, such as energy conserva-

tion and pollution control. Metal halide technology offers

excellent opportunities for positive benefits to the environment. For example, in many applications, metal halide lamps can easily

replace their incandescent counterparts and provide the same

illumination for about one-fourth the energy consumption.

Perhaps the most important development which has occurred for Venture Lighting during the past year is our emergence as the world's largest employee owned lamp manufacturer. Venture Lighting will continue to focus on

our original goal: being not only the largest, but the best metal halide lamp company in the world. Our commitment to that goal is evidenced by the continued growth of our company as seen in this catalog.

I welcome this opportunity to thank all of you for your past support and your continued faith in Venture Lighting
and its quality products, Your support has been the critical ingredient for our success. We are prepared to work very hard to maintain your trust in us as we enter this new decade by offering our custonters tomorrow's high quality, ener$/ efficient, white light sources today. Together we can improve our environment and continue our mutual growth.

I
WFTYMETAT HATIDE?
Unquestionably, Venture's focus has been on the development of metal halide lamp technology. 0f the lighting
technologies available today, why has Venture put almost all of its resources behind this one? The answer to this question

=T

lies in the attributes of the metal halide lamp and the user features this technology offers. There are seven primary advantages of metal halide: white light, high efficiency, compact size, long life, versatility, user comfort, and positive environmental impact.

Standard metal halide lamps produce white light with a color temperature of 4000' Kelvin and a Color Rendering lndex (Cru; from 65 to 70. This color rendition is superior to the fluorescent cool white lamp, long the standard for commercial indoor lighting. Metal halide lamps can also be designed to provide colors from 3000'Kelvin (incandescent lighD to 5000"* Kelvin (natural daylight) with CRI's up to
90.

0
Metal halide lamps produce light 3 to 5 times more efficiently than incandescent lamps. They are the most
efficient white light source available. When you combine this

feature with the other benefits of metal halide, it clearly is the standard against which the other lighting technologies
should be measured.

The small size of the metal halide arc tube allows for the design of very compact lamps. A 100 watt metal halide lamp g p of less than I inch produces the same light with an ^rc an 84 inch long high output cool white fluorescent output as lamp. Smaller lamps mean smaller luminaires with better control, allowing the lighting designer to put light where it is
most needed.

f
Photograph by Vance Roth,VRA Photography

Most discharge lamps have the inherent advantage of long life relative to their incandescent counterparts. Metal halide is no exception with lives ranging from 3,000 to 20,000 hours. Long life rneans fewer replacement lamps and less relamping labor over the life of the installation. In order to provide the same lumen hours over the life of one MH100/U, you would need 45-100 watt incatrdescent light
bulbs.

Metal halide lamps can be usecl indoors or outdoors equally well. \pical temperature extrenres have no inrpact on perfornrance. Metal halidc lanrps are also available in a wicle range of wattages (5tl t0 1650 watts) and lumen packages (3ttOO to 180,000 lut'netts), making tltcm useful over tlte widest possible range of applications.

Metal halide lamps provide the user with an efficient white light source which most people prefer over the yellow of high

pressure sodium or the blue-green of clear mercury, Because the source is efficient, it produces substantially less heat than incandescent lamps for a given light level. The reduction in heat from the lighting reduces the amount of
energy required to cool the lighted space.

A metal halide lighting system is able to deliver a given light

level in a space for considerably less energy than that required by an incandescent systenr. Less energT required for lighting means less gencration of electricity. This in turn means less consumptiott of our dwindling supplies of fossil fl,rels and less smokestack ernissiotrs from our power plants. Nl in all, use of rnetal halidc larnps instead of irrcandescent will help us to improve our envircnment.

Instant Restart Metal Halide Lamps

Standard metal halide lamps require from 5 to 15 minutes

Due to the high voltages associated with this system,

the fixture is required to be enclosed and the door safety

to restart after power interruptions. However, these instant restart lamps from Venture are capable of relighting instantaneously with the use of a specially designed ignitor. Power interruptions of l5 seconds or less will allow full restoration of light as soon as power is applied to the lamp. Interruptions longer than this will produce less than full light output upon re-ignition. The
amount of light produced will depend on the time the lamP
has had to cool down.

interlocked. These precautions are necessary to safeguard the user from the
danger of electrical shock.

Applications for this product include sports arenas (both indoor and outdoor), prisons, military installations, facto-

ries and any other location

where loss of light will cause

potential issues of either

safety or security.

High Pressure Sodium Lamps

High pressure sodium lamps are somewhat more efficient

than metal halide lamps of the same wattage. They are popular for general lighting applications where it has been determined that color rendition is not important. Parking lots, street lighting and security lighting comprise the major applications for high pressure sodium.
These lamps are also used for

Ratings are averages based on photometry at rated lamp watts-at 40o/o of average life for lamps operated on typical commercial ballasts at 10 burning hours per start (except as noted). Lumen values of universal and vertical lamps are measured in the vertical burning position, while horizontal lamps are measured in the horizontal burning position.

Under this section of the catalog, the standard case quantity references the full case quantity for each lamp type. Any

order for a number of lamps less than the standard case quantity is subject to broken case pricing.

0n commercial metal halide ballasts, lamp wattage tends to rise slightly throughout lamp life; therefore, actual mean lumens of lamps in service on typical commercial ballasts are higher than rated mean lumens. When universal lamps are operated in off-vertical burning positions, mean lumens will be lower than the rated vertical operation values and life
will be shortened.

This is a unique code assigned to each lamp by the American

National $tandards lnstitute (ANSD which describes both the electrical and physical characteristics of the product.

The codes in the fixture requirenrent coluntn indicate whether the lamp nrust only be operated in an errclosed fixture or in an open fixture witltin the specified burnirrg position limitations. It is essential that you read the safety information 0n burning positions and fixture requirentents 0n page 47. Lantps must be supported in fixtures by the bases only. Early performance degradation can result from metal parts of the fixture contacting the glass bulb of the
lamp.

The correlated color temperature of a light source, expressed in degrees Kelvin (K), describes the chromaticity or apparent

whiteness of the lamp which contributes to the visual appeaLr^nce of the lighted space. Color temperatures (where
shown) are appr oximate.

The maximum overall length of single ended lamps is the maximum distance in inches from the top of the bulb to the bottom of the base. For double ended lantps, it is the maximum end-to-end length,

Nl metal halide lamps normally exhibit some lamp-to-lamp

color variation and gradually change in color throughout life. This change during life is toward a warmer appearance and slightly lower color temperature. Near the end of rated life, color temperature may increase and shift toward blue. Metal halide lamps can operate well beyond rated life; however, the light output will be low and the color of the lamp will change
significantly.

The light center length for high intensity discharge larnps is the distance in inches from the center of the arc to a specified reference point on the larnp base, usually the bottom.

Burning position, ballast regulation characteristics and normal variations in supply voltage will affect lamp color and
light output.

Bulb designations consist of letters to indicate the bulb shape, followed by numbers which irrdicate the bulb diameter in l/ti

inch increments, Bulbs are measured at their largest

diameter. F'or example, an ED28 bulb is an elliptical dimpled slrape, 3Il2 inches in diameter.

High pressure sodium lamp color temperature is also

affected by ballasts, lamp design and life; however, because of the saturated yellow spectrum, it is usually less noticeable.

All single ended Pro-Arc'E and Super Pro-Arc'*' lamps have brass or nickel plated brass bases.

The Color Rendering !ndex (CRI) is a mathematically developed rating based on the spectral distribution in comparison to a standard source, It is an indication of a lamp's ability to show all colors of the visual spectrum. This characteristic is not listed in the data tables.

dimming process. These lamps have extremely long lives and reach end-of-life by an eroding of the electrodes in the arc tube, causing heany tungsten deposits (blackening) on the arc tube. Thls ultimately reduces light output to very low
levels.

High lntensity Discharge (UtO)lamps require auxiliary bailast equipment designed to produce proper electrical values. Nl pro-Arc' metal halide lamps will start at ambient temperatures of -30oC (-22"F) when used on approved

When there is a power interruption of l/2 cycle or more' HID lamps will extinguish and will not immediately restart when power is applied. Several minutes are required before an arc can be re-established by a normal ballast and starter. The exact time for restarting is dependent upon the ballast and starter, the lamp wattage, the flrture and any variation in supply voltage. Once the lamp restarts, several minutes will be^ie{uired to reach full light output. The time required to establish full light output can be as short as 5 minutes or as

REDUCTION OF RISK
The potential of violent failure can be significantly reduced

by relamping at or before the rated end-of-life. In

applications where the lamps burn continuously, the lamps should be turned off for a period of 15 minutes at least once per week, which will cause lamps nearing their end-ollife to fail passively upon relighting. pound of coal or .075 gallons of oil to produce one kilowatt hour of electricity. Based on the current fuel mlx used to generate electricity, a 10% reduction in total electrical usage would save about 75 million tons of coal and almost 27 million barrels of oil. This reduction in fossil fuel usage would also reduce pollution to the atmosphere by approximately 197 million tons of carbon dioxide, 1.7 million tons of sulfur dioxide and 692
