VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
FOR UNWANTED MEDICATION COLLECTION PROGRAM
PA CleanWays will hold the first Unwanted Medication
Collection Program at the Bradford Regional Medical Center
on Saturday, May 16th, 2009 from 8am to noon. Residents of
McKean and neighboring counties are asked to empty their
medicine cabinets and submit all their unwanted medications
to the North Bennett Street or the new entrance of the
Bradford Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity to dispose
of these materials safely, protecting our water resources and
our young people.
Volunteers are also still needed to help out with this event.

RADIOGRAPHY STUDENTS AT BRMC RECEIVE
AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIPS
Two second-year students from Bradford Regional Medical
Center’s (BRMC) School of Radiography have been awarded
annual Bradford Hospital Auxiliary scholarships.
Ricky Bee of Olean, N.Y., received the New Professional
Scholarship and Emily Rieder of St. Marys was presented with
the Clinical Excellence Scholarship during an awards
ceremony Friday at BRMC. Each scholarship is worth $750.
“The New Professional Scholarship was developed to
recognize a student for outstanding work ethic, professional-
ism, compassion, attitude and competency,” said Virginia
Hauser, the Auxiliary’s executive director. The scholarship was
first awarded in 2004. Both students will complete the 24-
month program at BRMC’s School of Radiography later this
year.
Mr. Bee will also earn a bachelor’s degree in radiologic
science from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at the
end of this year. He already has a full-time job at Charles Cole
Memorial Hospital, which is one of the clinical affiliates of
BRMC’s School of Radiography.
Ms. Reider earned her bachelor’s degree in radiologic
science from Pitt-Bradford during graduation ceremonies in
mid-April. Her future plans include relocating to Las Vegas.
Radiography School Clinical Coordinator Scott Gregoire said
the highly coveted scholarship Ms. Reider received is awarded
each year to the student rated the highest by staff
10 available now! radiographers from BRMC and clinical affiliate sites in
Warren, St. Marys, Coudersport, Kane and Olean.

awards from the Auxiliary to two students in this highly
respected program. The School of Radiography program at
BRMC is one of the best in the region, and our award
recipients are the two of the best among the best. The strength
of these two recipients is directly related to the strength and
commitment of every student in this program, the quality of
the facilities and the expertise of the faculty and clinical staff,”
said Dr. Holly Spittler, a member of the Auxiliary’s Scholarship
Committee.

• It was award-winning author Robert A. Heinlein, widely known as one
of the Grand Masters of science fiction, who made the following sage
observation: “Progress isn’t made by early risers. It’s made by lazy men
trying to find easier ways to do something.”
• Have you ever heard of a claque? Probably not, since their
effectiveness depends largely upon others not knowing they exist. A
claque is a group of people who have been hired to make a show seem
more successful by applauding the performers.
“The 10 Commandments of Common Sense”
by Hal Urban

Some Christians will have a hard time fully
embracing Hal Urban’s “The 10 Commandments
of Common Sense: Wisdom From the Scriptures
for People of All Beliefs,” recently released in paperback.
Some won’t like the fact that Urban attends both Catholic and
Protestant worship services. Others won’t be able to agree with his
dislike of politics being preached from the pulpit. Then there’s the fact
that he doesn’t like a preacher making disparaging remarks about
another faith.
But for those who don’t take offense at the aforementioned, a great
book awaits, one that can challenge a reader by offering practical
wisdom based on scriptural teachings.
Urban breaks down his 10 commandments to two sets of five: Things
you should avoid doing because they can hurt others or yourself, and
things you should do because they can enrich others and yourself.
Among the 10 are: not falling in love with possessions, not judging other
people, having impeccable integrity and, perhaps the most important
one, doing everything in love.
The commandments are not difficult concepts, but they are a
challenge to fully embrace -- especially, as Urban points out, the one
about doing everything in love. He gives plenty of examples for the
commandments based on his teaching career and his interactions with
others.
The book certainly gives a reader much to ponder in today’s unsettled
world. David Niven, the author of “The 100 Simple Secrets of Happy
People,” offers perhaps the best description of Urban’s book, calling it
“simple but profound.” At the very least, “The 10 Commandments of
Common Sense” is worth checking out, whether you fully agree with the
author or not.

Although he is up in his years, your great uncle is
in good health and lives alone. Most of the time, he
seems content tinkering in his yard, playing cards with
his buddies and hanging out with whomever drops by.
Lately, though, he has seemed a little lonely. You plan to
make as much time as possible for him yourself, but
you’d like to find him a dog that would give him the
consistent companionship and contact he craves.
In order to find the best dog for your great uncle,
you need to consider his lifestyle. Does he have the
energy, time and money to care for a dog? If not, are you
willing to step in and help out where needed? Will you
take care of the dog when your uncle is away, walk it
when your uncle can’t and drive it and your uncle to the
vet’s and pay for the bill?
If a dog still seems like a good idea after answering
all of these questions, then you will probably want to
focus on smaller breeds that thrive on attention, require
less maintenance and exercise, and are easier for
seniors to handle. Some of the most popular breeds that
meet these criteria include:
•Boston terriers. These gentle, friendly dogs weigh
15 to 28 pounds and get along well with other pets and
people. They are also protective and will let their
owners know when they hear or see something out of
the ordinary.
•Chihuahuas. These spunky dogs weigh no more

making them ideal for seniors living alone. Like Boston
terriers, they are also quite protective.
•Cocker spaniels. These gentle, loyal, patient dogs
weigh 20 to 30 pounds and require little exercise, just a
brief walk every day. They need regular grooming to
keep their curly coats in good condition.
•Maltese. These affectionate dogs weigh 3 to 7
pounds and love to play and do tricks. They do not shed
and work well for seniors with allergies.
•Pekingese. These affectionate, independent dogs
weigh 8 to 14 pounds and get along well with other pets
and people. They are wary of strangers, however, and
can be protective.
•Pomeranians. These intelligent, perky dogs weigh
3 to 7 pounds and get along well with other pets. They
are fairly low maintenance and require very little
grooming.
•Pugs. These high-energy, playful dogs weigh 14 to
18 pounds and thrive on attention. They love to cuddle
in their downtime and require regular grooming.
•Schnauzers. These attention-loving dogs weigh 10
to 11 pounds as miniatures and 30 to 50 pounds as
standards and love being around people. They require
regular grooming and brief daily walks.
•Scottish terriers. These intelligent, playful, loyal
dogs weigh 15 to 20 pounds and can be aggressive with
other dogs. They are very protective of their owners.
•Shih tzus. These sweet, gentle dogs weigh 6 to 10
pounds and adore their owners. They do, however,
require frequent grooming, unless their coats are
trimmed short.
•Toy poodles. These attention-loving dogs weigh 6
to 8 pounds and love being around people. They require
daily exercise and regular grooming if their coats are
long. They do not shed much, however, making them
ideal for seniors who suffer from allergies.
•Yorkshire terriers. These intelligent, playful,
energetic dogs weigh no more than 7 pounds and get
along well with other dogs.
Although they can be high-
strung at times, they make
great lap dogs in their
downtime.

Driving As We Age
One thing we can agree on: Those of us who drive
would like to keep driving as long as possible. Age,
however, has forced some of us to consider handing over
the keys.
Our vision and hearing aren’t what they used to
be, our reaction times are slower, and limited mobility
make it difficult to look over our shoulder before
making a lane change.
There are a few ways we can help ourselves stay
behind the wheel longer.
Senior driving classes teach how to adjust to age
related changes. The AARP Web site (www.aarp.org) has
a list of driving classes in many locations. Put in your
zip code to find one near you, or call 1-888-227-7669.
The AARP Drive Safety Program is an eight-hour
refresher course taught over two days. The cost is only
$10. There’s also an AARP self-paced online Driver
Safety Program that can be taken at home. The online
course costs $15.95 for AARP members.
Self awareness: There are a number of online
quizzes to determine if your driving is still up to par.
Look on AARP’s site for the 10-question quiz. AAA has a
15-question self-awareness quiz for drivers 55 and over
at its web site at www.aaafoundation.org.
Staying physically fit: Senior Drivers (Senior-
Drivers.org) has exercises to specifically increase senior
driver flexibility.
Here’s a great reason for us to do all we can to
keep driving: A 10-year study at Johns Hopkins
determined that seniors who keep driving are less likely
to have to go into assisted living or a nursing home. And
to continue driving, we need to stay fit and learn to
accommodate the changes that come with age.
Mild Exercise Helps Manage Arthritis
I bought a bicycle to help with my arthritis. The
next-door neighbor thought I was crazy, saying it would
make the arthritis worse. He was wrong.
Studies have shown that gentle range-of-motion
exercises actually make arthritis pain easier to manage.
According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise is “critical” for
those with arthritis because it “increases strength and
flexibility, reduces joint pain and helps combat fatigue.”
That’s good enough for me.
Because I live in an area with hills, and mostly
because I know I won’t go out every day to the YMCA
for swim classes once winter comes, I bought an indoor
recumbent bike. There are a number of benefits to this:
I can read or watch TV while pedaling, there’s no
danger of falling to the pavement, so a helmet isn’t
required, the weather doesn’t matter, and best of all,
since it’s right here, I’m more likely to use it.
I’ve settled on a routine of 10-minute sessions, at a
slow pace, three times a day, and I can already feel a
difference, as promised by the studies. That’s not to say
that using this bike is now all the exercise I do, but my
right knee isn’t as “hot” as it used to be, and I sense an
overall increase in leg strength.
Another idea, if you already have a bicycle, is to
buy a trainer stand. Your regular bike goes up on the
stand, and you pedal normally while the wheel spins
behind you.
If you would rather find an arthritis-friendly
exercise program, consider the Arthritis Foundation
Exercise Program or Aquatic Program. Check
www.arthritis.org or call 1-800-283-7800 to locate
classes in your area. Ask your doctor first if gentle
range-of-motion exercises are recommended for you.
Caring for Parents Is Strain on Seniors
We didn’t plan on it and don’t feel prepared for it,
but here it is: We, as seniors, are often responsible for
the care of an elderly parent or other relative. The exact
number of us in this position runs in the millions, and
many of us are doing it long distance.
Once it becomes obvious that a parent needs our
help, the logistics can become mind boggling, especially
if the parent lives far away. Trips back and forth,
negotiating with siblings to pitch in, wondering what
the doctor really said, finding pertinent docu-ments,
money management, gathering information on in-home
caregivers, weighing the options be-tween at-home care
versus assisted living, the guilt that we’re not doing
enough -- it all adds up, and many of us are having a
hard time coping.
There are two Internet sites that can help:
• The National Institute on Aging, part of the
National Institutes of Health, has a Web site devoted to
the issues and concerns of seniors, as well as for those
who care for seniors. At www.nia.nih.gov, put
“caregiving” in the search box. You’ll get 269 hits, all
loaded with information and links. Look especially for
Twenty Questions for Long-Distance Caregivers.
• At the AARP Web site (www.aarp.org) put “long
distance caregiver” in the search box and you’ll get
links to 68 articles, bulletins and resources. Or, at the
AARP front page, click Families and then Care-giving.

There are many do-it-yourself power of attorney
forms available; however, it is a good idea to have an
attorney draft the form for you. There are many issues
to consider and one size does not fit all.
The power of attorney document sets out the
agent’s powers. Powers given to an agent typically
include buying or selling property, managing a
business, paying debts, investing money, engaging in
legal proceedings, borrowing money, cashing checks,
and collecting debts. They may also include the power
to consent to medical treatment. Some powers will not
be included unless they are specifically mentioned. This
includes the power to make gifts and the power to
designate beneficiaries of your insurance policies.
The power of attorney can take affect immediately
or it can become effective only once you are disabled -
called a “springing” power of attorney. While a
springing power seems like a good idea, it can cause
delays and extra expense because incapacity will need
to be determined. If the power of attorney is springing,
it is very important that the method for determining
incapacity is clearly spelled out in the document.
To be valid a power of attorney must be executed
properly. Some states may require a signature, others
may require the power of attorney to be notarized, and
still others may require witnesses. It is important to
consult with an estate planning attorney in your state
to ensure your power of attorney is executed properly.
Even if you do everything exactly right, some banks
and other institutions are reluctant to accept a power of
attorney. These institutions are afraid of a lawsuit if the
power of attorney is no longer valid. Many banks or
other financial institutions have their own standard
power of attorney forms. To avoid problems, you may
want to execute the forms offered by the institutions

day. Not a lot of time to enjoy your hobby.... Is it?
Although there are several versions of hearing
protection devices on the market, a custom set of
earmolds is still the best answer in suppressing sound.
They provide excellent attenuation values and are
comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. They
can even be molded with high-grade transducers, which
allow for stereo compatibility or communications. We
also suggest checking with your local state officials on
the regulations of wearing hearing protection. Several
states have motorcycle laws regarding earplug use. For
a quick reference, see the AMA web pages on State

Some more interesting facts
• There is no significant difference in wind
noise level as a function of speed, no matter
what the helmet brand or model.
• Neither the riding position nor the brand or
styles of motorcycle make any significant
difference in noise level.
• Padding inside the helmet, open or closed
vents, or added weather stripping on the helmet
to alter flow patterns, does not significantly
alter the noise level in a helmet
• Stopped at a stop light at a busy intersection
with your helmet visor closed produces a sound
level of 80-90dB SPL
• When not wearing a helmet, the wind noise at
highway speed is nearly 10 times greater than
when wearing a full coverage helmet.
• Below 30mph, machine, exhaust and environ-
mental noises are heard. Once speeds exceed
approximately 30mph, wind noise dominates
completely.
• Some helmets resonate at approximately
500Hz, and actually enhance wind noise.
• Legal speeds of 65mph can produce wind
noise levels in excess of 108dB. This noise is
loud enough to cause TTS in your hearing,
tinnitus, and permanent hearing damage.

Well into your golden years and feel like makeup is
your enemy? Ready to pack up all of your cosmetics and
put them away forever? Don’t! With the right
application, makeup can benefit faces of all ages.
If you are a mature woman and you’re not sure how
to apply makeup anymore, relax. All you need to do is
select soft, subtle colors from your makeup collection
and apply it in ways that will play up your best features
and detract from the effects of age, like lines and
wrinkles. Here are some tips to help you.
Got a daily skin care routine? No? Well, then, you
need to find one. Moisturizer will do wonders for aging
skin. To find the best skin care products for you, shop
around and do your homework.
The better condition your skin is in, the better your
makeup will look. You should start the process with a
foundation with a lighter-textured base. This will help
detract from lines and wrinkles. The foundation should
be the same color as your skin and you should blend it
around your jaw line.
Next, you can concentrate on the flaws in your skin.
For dark spots and blemishes, concealer is a must.
Don’t go overboard with it, but do use it to conceal as
many flaws in your skin as possible. To reduce the lines
from the edge of your nose to the corner of your mouth,
use a highlighter. To reduce a saggy neck, use a non-
frosted powder in a shade darker than your skin tone.
Aging eyes deserve special care. To fill in thinning
eyebrows, use an eyebrow pencil that matches your hair
color. For eyeliner, gray or brown works better than
stark black. If you have graying hair, you may want to
use pink and gray eye shadow to soften it. According to
some experts, frosted eye shadow will make you look
younger, as long as you know how to apply it correctly.
The lightest shade should go under the brow, a darker
one closer to the lashes and the darkest on the crease.

TECHNOLOGY ACT GRANT
Thanks to a Library Services and Technology Act Grant of
$55, 572, library service in McKean County is now much more
streamlined. The grant, administered through the Bradford
Area Public Library, has allowed the five McKean County
libraries to link their collections, share their assets, and serve
the patrons of McKean County much more efficiently. This was
achieved with the purchase of new hardware for each library, a
central server and Follett’s Destiny Library Manager Software.
Destiny allows the libraries of Smethport, Kane, Mt.
Jewett, Bradford and Port Allegany to be virtually one
comprehensive county-wide library. Patrons can now borrow
materials much more easily as a central data-base provides
access to patron information. All of the libraries’ collections are
now searchable through one access point, as they are joined in
a county-wide union catalog. To begin using this valuable new
service, patrons can log onto http://onescreenmckean.org and
search all of McKean County’s libraries from one convenient
