This Week in Syria, Deeply

Dear Deeply Readers, This week we looked at what happens when War Comes to a Damascus Private School and how Europes Young Jihadis Now Fight in Syria. In Beirut, we followed A Familys Search for Austin Tice, and got to know A Family Left Jobless After Escaping from Homs. Meanwhile, as a fierce assault swamped central Syria, Paul Salem at the Carnegie Middle East Center helped us Understand the Regime Offensive in Homs. For a slice of what constitutes normal life in Syria, we had a conversation with a 27-yearold woman, Delivering Aid in the Crossfire. It is funny how people are adapting, he said. The power comes on every three days for two hours and no matter what time it is you rush to charge your phone and cook. Even if the water comes on at 4am they rush to take a shower, do the laundry and clean the house. More starkly, he described that Now we have a new kind of war a relief war. The government doesnt allow assistance to enter opposition areas and vice versa. That fuels desperation, amid the fighting, We are dying and we dont care who takes control. Im sure if you made a survey today and take out the extremists on both sides, then 80 percent [of civilians] would just want the war to stop. They dont want freedom or Bashar or anything [in particular] they just want the killing to stop. Its not important who controls the country if no one is left alive. In an insightful community oped, Nate Rosenblatt of Caerus explored how Aleppo Has Become a Feral City of lawlessness and pockets of extremist control. Poor neighborhoods are being armed and fed a diet of uncompromising religious beliefs, he wrote.
