Fortunately, a new crop of so-called “clean
diesel” vehicles debuts for the 2009 model
year that takes advantage of today’s low-sul-
phur diesel fuel to produce substantially
reduced emissions, and will be certified for
sale in all 50 states. Diesels have long been
favored in Europe for boosting both a vehi-
cle’s performance and its fuel economy, and
doing so while emitting about 25-percent
fewer greenhouse gases than a comparable
gas-powered model.
For example, the four-cylinder clean-diesel
engine in the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
sedan and SportWagen station wagon is rated
at a combined 34 city/highway mpg, versus
only 24 mpg for the standard five-cylinder gas-
oline version, with equivalent performance.
While many diesel models carry a premium
price, they generally cost less than do hybrid

Aside from the aforementioned Jetta,
most of the new clean diesels are SUVs,
which stand to benefit the most from mea-
surable increases in fuel economy. These
include the 2009 Audi Q7 TDI, BMW X5
xDrive 35d and the Mercedes-Benz ML320
BlueTEC, GL320 BlueTEC and R320
BlueTEC models.
Of interest to auto enthusiasts, among the
clean diesels hitting the market for 2009 is a
bona fide luxury sports sedan, the new
BMW 335d. It comes powered by a 3.0-
liter inline-six-cylinder “BluePerformance”
diesel engine that employs high-pressure
direct fuel injection and twin turbochargers
to generate 265 hp, with a full 425 lbs/ft of
tire-squealing torque. BMW says it will hit
60 mph in 6 seconds, less than a half-sec-
ond slower than the gasoline-powered 335i.
Best of all, it’s estimated to achieve a stellar
23 city/33 highway fuel economy.
Like the Mercedes-Benz clean diesels,
BMW’s system uses both a heavy-duty filter
and a urea-based exhaust system treatment to
flush out pollutants. This liquid treatment must
be replenished periodically in order to maintain
a vehicle’s lower emissions levels. Audi and
Volkswagen clean diesels instead rely on a
nitrous oxide storage catalyst and a particulate
filter to minimize emissions.
Francois Gravigny, an adviser for the mar-
ket-tracking firm R.L. Polk & Co.,
Southfield, Mich., says clean diesels could
ultimately become nearly as popular among
luxury-car buyers here as they are in Europe,
where fuel costs are downright stratospheric
by comparison. “If you look at diesel pene-
tration in Europe over the last few years for,
say, a BMW 7 Series or a Mercedes-Benz S-
Class it’s probably at about 70 percent – it’s
huge,” he says.
It will be a challenge to convince U.S. car
buyers that clean diesels are a quantum leap
from the old rattle-prone oil-burners of the
past. And diesel sales will at least initially
be hampered by the cost of diesel fuel, cur-
rently about 30 cents per gallon higher than

regular unleaded gas. The discrepancy was as
wide as 80 cents per gallon when fuel prices
peaked. According to the U.S. Department
of Energy, this is largely due to increased
worldwide demand, higher refining and dis-
tribution costs for current low-sulfur content
diesel fuel and a higher federal excise tax.
“That’s really the only question mark I see
for higher diesel sales in the U.S., the price at
the pump,” Gravigny says. “If diesel prices
come closer to what premium gasoline costs, I
think the shift toward higher-mileage clean
diesels will come pretty quickly.”

here’s little argument that the
latest gas/electric hybrid-pow-
ered vehicles are among the
most environmentally benign
models on the road, combin-
ing admirable fuel economy with ultra-
low-emission powertrains. Hybrids like
the 46 mpg Toyota Prius and the 42 mpg
Honda Civic Hybrid are the cleanest run-
ning cars on the road this side of a pure
electric vehicle.
Unfortunately, hybrids are pricey, on
average costing $3,000 or $4,000 more
than comparable gasoline-powered mod-
els, which can put them out of reach of
many buyers’ budgets. One alternative is
to choose a fuel-frugal subcompact
model, but that’s not practical for all
motorists. Fortunately, there are “greener”
cars available in virtually all sizes and
configurations that are specifically engi-
neered to generate fewer emissions than
comparable models. The secret lies in
knowing how to identify them.

a new vehicle,” she says.
Along with information on fuel econo-

bon footprint and Air Pollution Score.
A vehicle’s Air Pollution Score repre-
sents the relative amount of health-dam-
aging and smog-forming airborne pollut-
ants the vehicle emits. Among these are
hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, particulate
matter, carbon monoxide and formalde-
hyde. Scoring is based on a 10-point sys-
tem, with 10 representing a zero-emis-
sions vehicle. The current highest record-
ed scores are 9.5.

(SULEV) or “partial-zero emissions”
(PZEV) vehicles – which are rated at 9
and 9.5, respectively – are offered only in
California and the handful of other states
(Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Maine,
Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey,
New Mexico, New York, Oregon,
Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and
Washington) that adhere to its stricter air-
pollution standards.
These cars come with additional
exhaust-scrubbing hardware and carry
longer warranties for emissions equip-
ment (10-years/150,000-miles) than stan-
dard models sold elsewhere. These vehi-
cles may be sold to those living in bor-
dering states, but rules prohibit dealers
from selling them to residents elsewhere.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that
those living in other areas can’t drive an
ultra-clean car, however. Some lower-
emissions models may be given higher

similar states for certification purposes,
but are otherwise identical to the ver-
sions sold elsewhere in the U.S., where
they receive a slightly lower score.
According to the EPA, the key to
knowing which is which lies in a vehi-
cle’s engine ID code, which is posted
under the hood of each make and model
sold in the U.S. Both of the aforemen-
tioned Web sites list the engine codes for
the various Air Pollution Scores for all
versions of all vehicles; if the number is
the same for models listed as otherwise
having different pollution ratings for
California and the rest of the country,
shoppers can assume the car or truck
meets the higher posted standard in all
50 states.

to the EPA, each gallon of petroleum
consumed by a car or truck is responsi-
ble for an estimated 20 pounds of green-
house gases, which include carbon diox-
ide, nitrous oxide, methane and other
compounds, which are believed to be
major contributors to global warming.
Vehicles that are enabled to run on E85
ethanol (a blend of 15 percent gasoline
and 85 percent corn-based ethanol) emit
less CO2 per mile when driven on E85 –
which inherently contains a lower carbon
content – than they would when running
on pure unleaded gasoline.
Driving a higher-mileage model auto-
matically casts less of a carbon footprint,
but motorists don’t necessarily have to
choose the most frugal car on the lot to
do their part for the environment. In fact,
experts say that realizing even minor
improvements in fuel economy among
the worst polluters on the road is the
most efficient way to reduce greenhouse-
gas emissions.
For example, choosing a GMC Yukon
with a 5.3-liter V8 at 16 mpg instead of
the Denali version and its 14 mpg 6.2-
liter V8 “would save over 130 gallons of
gasoline per year for the typical driver
and eliminate 1.7 tons of CO2 emissions,”
according to Therese Langer, transporta-
tion program director for the American
Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.
“By comparison, achieving the same sav-
ings through improvements to a Civic
Hybrid would require a 25 mpg boost, to
67 mpg.”

TWO-SEAT CARS: These are the smallest vehicles on the road. The Smart fortwo takes top honors primarily
by virtue of being the only one that is actually engineered to be an economy car. Both the fortwo coupe
and convertible (below) are rated at 33–city/41–highway mpg with an automatic transmission. Either way,
this is a tiny, claustrophobic car that’s happier around town than it is on high-speed American freeways,
where it will struggle with its 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine.
All other two-seaters currently on the market are sports cars that are engineered for more spritely acceler-
ation (and include some of the worst gas guzzlers on the road, like the 10 mpg Lamborghini Murcielago).
Among them, Mazda’s MX-5 convertible takes the top spot. While final 2009 numbers were not yet posted at
this writing for the MX-5, the 2008 MX-5 was rated at a fairly frugal 22/27. With a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder
engine and true sports car underpinnings, driving an MX-5 can easily be among most enjoyable ways to be
fuel-efficient.

COMPACT CARS: Even though these cars are larger than those in the
above categories – and are actually roomy enough to carry adults in the
back seat – it’s where buyers have seen some big mileage increases, large-
ly as a result of advanced engine technology. Honda’s Civic Hybrid (above
left) is top rated at 40/41 mpg, with Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI (below left)
coming in second; the Jetta comes powered by a clean-burning turbodiesel
engine and gets 30/41 mpg with a manual and 29/40 mpg with a clutch-
less manual transmission that works like an automatic.

MINI-COMPACT CARS: The top spot for fuel efficiency among miniscule
models is the Mini Cooper, which is rated at 28/37 and 25/34 mpg for the
manual and automatic gearbox, respectively. Its 1.6-liter, four-cylinder
engine is peppy enough to make it fun to drive and a hatchback design
keeps it surprisingly practical. The next spot in efficiency is the Volkswagen “Swivel Grip” Dallas Milo
New Beetle (above) at 20/28 mpg, with an automatic or manual, and is Oil/Fuel Filter
