Missionary work

Uberlandia is a city of about 150,000. The school where the Sturgeons taught is called Escola Speak English, and served almost 500 students from age 13 on up. They taught about 24 hours each week, and spent the rest of the time doing missionary work. They conducted Bible study with area families, and Sturgeon showed resi dents "Life of Christ" and Moody sci ence films, something Brazilians loved, he says. "Many of the people where we were couldn't afford to go to the show, so seeing these movies was really great

for them. And since it's so warm, we could even show them on the street,"

says Mrs. Sturgeon. The couple made many friends through the school, where students trying to learn English would teach them a little Portuguese at the same time. Several young English students have become close friends, and the Stur geons have been able to "witness" to
them.

When they return, probably in Au gust, they want to devote all their time to missionary work, and will not teach at the school anymore, they say.

"The Christian families here do sc

much for us while we're gone; we want

to devote all our time to the Lord's work. We also want to start house

churches, or congregations in homes,' says Sturgeon. When they return, they'll continue working with several of the same fami lies, plus the school's founder anddirec tor Harry D. Scates, Scates is the son ol the Rev. Erskine Scates, president of In termountain Bible College.

VISITING WITH JIM

We have nov^' been in the United States on furlough for five months. We plan to return to Brazil in September If everything goes as planned. During the first part of May, I v/orked on several papers that we needed to send to Brasilia.
David and Ruth Sanders are going to be doing much work for us in Brasilia in order to receive authorization for us to return to Brazil. Many of the papers which we sent must be translated to Portuguese. I imagine that within two or
three months from now that we will receive authorization to return to Brazil

as missionaries with a permanent visa. We will return to Uberlandia for a three or four year term. Pray for us that the process will speedily move along.
We have reports from Harry Scales and J im Bunch that things are going well in the church work in Uberlandia. There are about fifty people coming to the church meeting on Sunday. Harry has started a youth group of High School and College students on Saturday night. Many has also been having special meetings with the men who work in the church work m Uberlandia. Harry, Jim, Orquidio, Valdo, and Ita meet together to plan for church growth. These men are together for a prayer time and Bible study at eight a.m. Sunday morn ing to discuss the scriptures that will be studied at the church meeting at four in the afternoon. This is very helpful in preparation for the church service. Elaine Scales and Sandy Bunch are still working hard on the Sunday School which meets at 10:00 a.m. Many children come from the neighbor hood to hear things about God and Jesus. Also the women are having a weekly prayer meeting and Bible study. We praise the Lord that things are going great
in Uberlandia.

We had some sad news from Harry in his last letter. He said that Ita and Theresa's baby daughter passed away with pneumonia. This was a shock to all. Ita and Theresa have three other children, a boy and two girls. Pray for these people that God might work mightily through this family in the church
work.

"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose ... What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
Romans 8:28 & 31

TIME mJH CAROL

We have been busy these lastfew months sharing our program of music and slides and answering questions on our work for Jesus in Brazil. We praise God for giving us two healthy boys who have done so well "going". Christian brothers and sisters have given of themselves in many ways - their great hos pitality and good food, theit gifts of material things, their deep friendship and spiritual sharing. We're having tun and being blessed by these times here to gether. Ourtime here is so precious so we are trying to use it wisely. Although absent from Brazil, because we love our Lord Jesus and the people of Brazil we still try to be witnesses of Jesus' love. Writing letters to Brazil is not quite as much fun as receiving them because writing and thinking takes longer in another language. Because of your help, we have sent educational materials (visual aids) and some used clothing. If these items arrive and prove useful, we will let you know so more may help. Because many Brazilians have much less
than we do, even little things are appreciated. We remember how much even a pair of socks or piece of gum from you was special and showed your love. We are so glad God's Spirit is busy here and in Brazil convicting men of their sins the Bible telling of eternal life and abundant life in Jesus Christ.

TIMOTHY'S AND MARK'S CORNER

We sure are having fun here with grandma and grandpa and our friends. I can go outside now because it's not cold anymore. Some days I can even go swim ming like 1did in Brazil. Mark maybe can go too because he's getting bigger and likes to splash when he takes a bath. I like to pull Mark in our wagon. Our arms and faces got real red yesterday after we played outside. God is so-oo big
to make the sun shine here and in Brazil so far away.

Sometimes I call my friends In Brazil on my telephone. WOWl My friend's mother isgoing to have another baby so 6+1=7 - there'll be 7 friends in that family. Another baby biggerthan Mark died and went to heaven.

Dad said Mark Is eight months old and I'm three. I love my little brother even if he knocks my blocks down and sometimes gets in my way. He likes to follow me in his walker. He can't talk yet but sometimes
he screams and we have a contest to see who can scream the loudest until

Mom and Dad say stop. I pray before I eat and sometimes before seconds, and go to sleep and
whenever I want. God hears me!

"Dear Godthank you for this nice day we can be here at Mommy and Daddy's house. Thank you for the salt and

pepper (I don't like pepper) and the milk and hamburger

and rice. Where are the beans like in Brazil and bread?

Thank you for jesus and 1 have to go to sleep after I eat.

BRAZILIAN

OUTREACH
SEPTEMBER. 1976

TIME WITH JIM

The time is swiftly approaching for our departure date for returning to Brazil. We hope to leave in October. Our authorization to return to work as missionaries in Brazil on a permanent basis was granted to us on August 10th. Permanent visas are not stamped in the passport until a trip is made to the Brazilian Consul ate as a family. At the Consulate, we are interviewed. Also, we must fill out application forms and have a physical by a doctor whom they choose. This trip will take about a week. We will leave August 29th and return September 10th. Fifteen days after we go to the Brazilian Consulate, our permanent visa will be

finalized allowing us to return to Brazil, within 90 days from the date that the
passport is stamped with the exit visa. Another very important thing that we must do before we return to Brazil is to pack all of the house hold items to be sent air freight. Please pray for us as we make preparations to return to Brazil. When we return to Brazil we plan to do a lot of personal witnessing. Also we plan to have home Bible studies, hoping that through these efforts we will be able to establish some New Testament Churches in Uberlandia. Our hope is that the new churches will be led by qualified Brazilians.

"And the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also."
11 Timothy 2:2

We are thankful to the Lord for our

forwarding agents, John and Gerrie

DelTondo. The Del Tondo's and their

two children, Jeanetta and Brucc, live in Alamosa, Colorado. John is

employed by J. C. Penney's in Alamosa. They have been our forwarding agents for the last three years and we are happy that they will be taking care of this job for our next 3 or 4 year term in Brazil. They are a very dedicated Christian family. They have helped to
start the New Testament Christian Church in Alamosa.

VISITING WITH CAROL

Without Him I could do nothing, Without Him I'd surely fail. . . But with Jesus, thank God, I'm saved.

Without God's love and strength, we could not have done what we have or gone where we've gone. So we give the praise and glory to God and Jesus.

Our months with you have been busy and wonderful. This summer has been so full of exciting things like the five Vacation Bible Schools in which we were missionaries and the many times of inspiration with our Christian friends and families. Sometimes I would hardly get unpacked before it would be time to leave again. I'm thankful for disposable diapers on our trips and glad they don't
cost as much as in Brazil! It seemed like at times I was so tired of going and

"keeping up" with Timothy and Mark that I could not go another minute. Mark would begin his day at 5:00 or 5:30 or even 4:30. But Jesus and God were awake even then and gave me physical and spiritual strength to do my work and
go through the day and night.

Thank you for our good meals and times of fun and fellowship with you. Thanks most of all for your prayers and support to us. We remember your giving - the young boy at Bible School who gave a $20 bill, that $100 check, all your sacrificial giving because you love God and care about His children in Brazil. We will remember our times with you when we are in Brazil.

Now wc are packing, preparing to return to Brazil where we will be telling people to accept jesusand Saviour so that they can be saved.

TIMOTHY'S AND MARK'S CORNER

"Is it a long ways? Which church are wc going to?"

I asked Mom and Dad.

Wc went so many different placcs. Mark and me slept in a lot of different beds and on the floor too. One night, Mark got his head caught under Mom and Dad's
bed when we were sleeping on the floor. We got to cat a lot of good food, loo, but not rice and beans every day like we do in Brazil. I really like Vacation Bible School and I got to go to five of them. It's sure

Timo thy's and Mark's Corner, continued.

fun to sing and learn about jesus and the Bible. "Oi" (Hi) to all my new friends. Remember us, Marcos and Timotio? Thank you, our friends atLittletonand Cralg, for my ticket and Mark's airplane ticket to Brazil. We're going back there. Before we go back, Mark will have a birthday and be one year old. My first
birthday was in Brazil.

We sure have had fun here with you and with Grandma and Grandpa, but Mom and Dad say God wants us to go back to Brazil. Mark and me like Brazil and want to do what God wants! We love you! (Tchau Bye!)

BRAZILIAN

OUTREACH
DECEMBER 1976

VISITING WITH JIM ...

But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through jesus Christ our Savior, that being justified by His grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of
eternal fife. Titus 3: 4-7

At this Christmas season we are thankful to be back in Brazil working for our Lord jesus andSavipur We are looking forward to the work that the Lord has called us to do here in Brazil. Our trip back to Brazil was a beautiful one, Every

thing went fine. We only had to pay a small customs tax of ( U.S.) $17.74 on six boxes of air freight. We stayed at the home of David and Joanne Myers in Brasilia for five days waiting for our air freight and visiting with them. They are doing fine. They are really getting involved in the Lord's work at Brasilia. They work
with David and Ruth Sanders and Bruce and June Colson. We are thankful to work together with them for the Lord in Brazil.

About three weeks after we got to Uberlandia a good friend's mother (Dona Felina) passed away. I found out about the death about four hours before the funeral. I was able to read some scripture and pray before they took the body to the cemetary. Here in Brazil very seldom does the family have a service in a
church. Also the body is buried within twenty four hours after death. I have been

working with the (Dona Felina's) son Paul (Paulo) hopingthat he will come to
the Lord. I am going to give him a New Testament and share with him the plan of salvation. Pray to the Lord that Paulo will accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Pray also that (Cleuzinha) his wife will give her life to the Lord. They have three
little girls.

Harry Scates, J im Bunch and 1are making plans for future work here in Uberlandia. We want to begin house church meetings again in homes where the whole family has been converted to Christ. We want to have two or three Christian families in an area before we begin having house church meetings. This will give more strength to the churches which meet in homes. For a year the

church has been meeting at Harry Scates' English School (Escola Speak English).
Now we have more men involved in the Sunday morning meetings. Please pray for the following men: Ita, Jose, and Valdo. These men are helping to lead the meetings here in Uberlandia. We are hoping that the Brazilian men will take a real active role in leading church meetings. We are looking forward to the new year working for our Lord here in Uberlandia. Praise the Lord!
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

TIME WITH CAROL...

H'e're back in Brazil! Back to making mistakes, speaking another language, big ugly cockroaches, red dirt that stays in our clothes, adjusting again to another
culture. We Praise the Lord we're here. We had a wonderful Christmas in the

U.S. last year with our dear families and friends and even though things will be

different we will have another wonderful Christmas this year remembering Jesus'
coming to save all men.

Wise men still adore Him! In the United States, in Brazil, and in every other country there are Christians. We remember the wise men in the Christmas story. Their love for Jesus was so great bringing Him precioijs gifts. We need to give to jesus. These Christian people here love, yes, adore Jesus and give^Him themselves. Their enthusiastic (loud, too) singing and clapping, their prayers, their love and witness to others are beautiful gifts to jesus. Christmas means more to them now, more than to the average Brazilian whose big event is Carnaval. jesus has given these hope, peace, love, abundant and eternal life. Without Jesus their lives (and

ours too) are miserable beause of Satan extreme poverty, sickness, mental
illness, drunkedness, marital problems, and more.

1wish you could come with me to our ladies weekly prayer meetings and share what a blessing is received by all because of God's Spirit. We meet at different houses each week and sing praises to God and jesus with our whole hearts, study the Bible discussing how it relates to our daily lives, and pray. We

make a list (usually about 20 names) and sincerely pray. One of the Brazilian
women prayed for Jim and I because she had a dream about us fighting. Jim really laughed when I told Him but we did appreciate her prayers and we need
yours too!

What a privilege to know jesus as our Lord and Saviour making Christmas so real. Whata privilege, loo, to live live and work for jesus and God In this Happy
New Year of 1977!!

TIMOTHY'S and MARK'S CORNER

Wegot off that big airplane (we were sure glad after eating six times and sleeping so long) into another world we had forgotten. The people talked
different like I used to talk but now I forgot. I play with my friends and they don't understand what I say but that doesn't matter. We have fun anyway. It's hot here and we can play outside
even without a shirt. We went swim

ming too. Those bananas and oranges are so good. Mom told Dad that we ate twenty bananas in three days. We
don't have snow here but we have lots

of rain and get to use our umbrellas.

Christmas is almost here. We have

a big Christmas tree and it's alive in our?

house! We water it every day and Dad jgf

is going to plant it outside after Christ mas. Santa Claus is called Papai (pro nounced Popeye) Noel and Jesus is the same here except they say it different. Guess what color Papai Noel is? He's ; black or brown but wears a red suit "
like Santa Claus. We like Christmas. It's fun because

we sing songs about Jesus being born and every body is happy. We're glad Jesus was born and we can be here in

Brazil to tell our friends about Jesus. Some of them don't know very much about Jesus and God. We're still little but we can tell them Jesus loves them and play
nice to show them we love Jesus.

Love, Timotio e Marcos
