PASTORAL CORNER
Offering ach otfiera grefrng and sign of Chrtsfs Pace. . WhenJesussent out the seventy-two disciples he said that their first wordson entering a housewere to be: 'Peaceto this house!"They were to be first of all bearers of peaceand goodwill. Withoutpeacenothing is possible. Jesus' Peace is not a negative thing. It is not just the absence of war or anger or hostility.Jesus'Peaceis always a positive thing. It implies openness, friendship, tolerance, goodwill, hospitality, reconciliation. It disposes us to reachout to others. It helpsto break downbarriers of suspicion, fear, prejudice, bigotry. Workingfor peacemeanswelcoming peoplecloseto us,thosewho annoyus or disagree with us, thosewho provoke anguish withinus. To takethe pathof peace is to acceptpeopleas they are, with all their limitations and weaknesses. The peoplewe need to make peace with are not our friends but our enemies. It is no accidentthat the Rite of Communion is preceded by the Celebrant saying: 'The peaceof the Lordbe with you always.' Howoften do any of us stop and think aboutwhat is actually beingoffered? About how wonderfulis the gift being offeredto us - the peaceof Christ,a peacewhichthe world cannotgive. Then we are invited to 'offer each other a sign of peace.'The handwe reach out to our neighbors is the samehandwith whichwe receive Jesus in Communion. We cometo Mass to receive blessings from the Lord,If we took nothing else away with us from here but peace, our time wouldbe wellspent. However,we must also be preparedto give back something of what we have received. The end of the Massis not like the end of a ball gameor a movie wherewe simplyget up and leave. At the end of the Masswe are sent out. Havingreceived the peaceof Christ,we are then sent out as ambassadors of that peace to others. If we wish to be effective messengers of peacethree things are necessary, Firstly,we have to have peace ourselves, Secondly, we haveto be willingto sharethat peace with others. And thirdly, the other personhasto be willing to receive it from us. The haruestis great. The opportunities for sharing peace, for making peace, are many. We may not alwayssucceed, because it takes at leasttwo to make peace, The greatdangeris that we will allowpeople to take our peace away, This happenswheneverwe become an9ry,hostile, bitter,or vengeful when others do not respond favorably to us. We haveto acceptthat our peacewill not alwaysbe accepted. It may come backto us like the echo of our own voice,But at the very leastwe must try. In a world torn apart by rivalry, angerand hatred,we have the challenging vocation to be livingsignsof lovethat can bridge divisions and healwounds. Fr. CharlieBruniclg6P ARE YOU A REVOLUTIONARY? "Christians are called to be revolutionaries, changing the worldone heartat a time.A Christian who is not a revolutionary todayisn'ta Christian," saidPope Francis duringa conference that quicklyturnedinto a rallyfor evangelization and careof the poor. Morethan people gathered 10,000 on June 17th at the Vatican to listen to Pope Franciskick off the annual Rome gathering diocesan convention, a three-day of priests, pastoral religious priorities and laypeople to set for the year. coming Speaking for 30 minutes withouta prepared text, Pope Francis repeatedly calleduponRome's Catholics to take seriouslytheir responsibility to bring God's love to others."The revolutionstarted 2,000 years ago by Jesus,is the longestlastingrevolution in historyand the one with the greatest impacton the worldbecause it focusednot on territoryor power, but on changing human hearts." "Love is the greatestforce for transforming reality because it breaks downthe wallsof selfishness andfills the chasms that keeppeople far from one another," he said.'With your witness, with your smile,'youneedto let othersknowthat the sameFather loves them, too." A parishcommunity that stayson the churchgrounds with activemembers talkingonly with activemembers "is a sterile community," he said. PopeFrancis saidhe knowsit is difficult to havethe patience and courage to go out and share the fdith, but that is what every Christian is called to do. (Ca thoIicNews Seruice/ed ited)
