Introduction
The Norman Antivirus Impact on System Performance Application Note describes how to restore the original configuration settings for Norman Antivirus on a PCM, Diversity laptop, or Diversity Optimizer system. You only need to restore these settings when you update your Norman software to the Norman Security Suite version 7 or later. This document also describes how to install Norman Security Suite on a PCM that does not have an existing Norman installation.
Overview
By default, SwissQual configures Norman Antivirus to run manually, that is, you need to start scans manually or update the virus definitions manually. This configuration reduces the strain on Windows system resources and improves measurement performance. However, the latest version of Norman Antivirus, that is, Norman Security Suite 7 changes the default settings to automatic. This change can result in corrupted measurements due to a heavier demand on system resources.
You need administrator access to restore the SwissQual default settings for Norman Antivirus.
Note: Your login information was sent to you in an e-mail. c d Click 3 Party Software Updates and then click Go. On the Software-Updates page, download the Version 7.XX.XX.zip file from the NormanSecurity_Suite-Config-File section.
rd
Extract the store.nts file from the ZIP file to the computer where you want to update your antivirus settings.
2. Stop the Norman Windows service. a b On the Start menu, click Run, and then type Services.msc in the Open box. In the list of local services, right-click Norman Resource Provider, and then click Stop.
3. Replace the store.nts file in the C:\Program Files\Norman\Resources folder with the store.nts file from the SwissQual support page. Note: If you cannot find this folder, look in C:\Norman\Resources. 4. In the Confirm File Replace dialog box, click Yes.
5. Start the Norman Windows service. a b On the Start menu, click Run, and then type Services.msc in the Open box. In the list of local services, right-click Norman Resource Provider, and then click Start.
6. Confirm the settings. a Right-click Norman Security Suite icon in the Windows notification area, and then click Norman Security Suite.
On the Home page, ensure that automatic updates for Internet Update are disabled.
On the Virus & Spyware Protection page, ensure that On-access file scanning is disabled.
7. Confirm the settings in Windows. a b In Windows, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Security Center. Ensure that Virus Protection is off.
This chapter describes how to install Norman Security Suite 7 on a PCM that does not currently have a Norman Antivirus installation. Important: You cannot use the installer file that is discussed in this chapter to update an existing Norman installation.
Tip: You can use the same installer file for all of your PCMs. 2. Prepare the PCM. a b Connect a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse to the PCM. In Windows, copy the installation file to the PCM.
Note: If you do not have a USB hub, disconnect the mouse or keyboard to make a USB port available for the USB stick. 3. Start the installation. a b c d Double-click the NormanSecuritySuite_7XXx86_ENG_XXX.msi installer file. On the Welcome page, click Next and on the Information page, click Next. On the License Agreement page, click I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next. On the Product license key page, type the license key for the security suite, and then click Next.
4. Specify the installation options. a b On the Setup Type page, click Custom, and then click Next. On the Custom Setup page, clear the Personal Firewall and Parental Control check boxes, and then click Next.
On the Screen Saver Scanner page, clear the Enable Screen Saver check box, and then click Next.
5. Install the software. a b On the Ready to Install the Program page, click Install. In the restart message window, click OK.
Important: Wait for the Norman Security Suite to update the virus definitions. d In the Product Manager window, click Restart now.
6. After Windows restarts, apply the default SwissQual settings to Norman Security Suite. Note: For a description on how to apply these settings, see the Restoring the SwissQual Default Settings" chapter on page 2.
