CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Asian Texas is a western caf which tend to carrying out the atmosphere of Texas Cowboys tavern theme. The caf not only serving customers with the various types of interesting western foods, but also trying to offer customers a different atmosphere where they are not able to find it in Kuching. Through the design of caf that nearly looks like a Texas cowboys tavern; accompanied by music and friendly waiter or waitress, Asian Texas will be able to bring something different in Kuching. The Asian Texas is located at Jalan Tun Jugah, specifically in Premier 101. Premier 101 has been known as one of the most strategic places for the food and beverage business in Kuching. There are many colleges and schools; offices and residential house around this area which will make Asian Texas to get a full advantage of this location. Asian Texas is targeting their market to almost all ages target market, from the children, youngster and adult ages. With the use of Internet media, Asian Texas would able to reach many of the customers in Kuching to promote our new and interesting concepts.

CHAPTER 2 COMPANY BACKGROUND Asian Texas is a western caf with cowboy concept that formed through the partnership of several new entrepreneurs. Those new entrepreneurs come from different background; they consist of Lee Hui Sing from Kuching, Malaysia; Hii Soon Ing from Sibu, Malaysia, Fendri from Indonesia; and Xin Nian Long from China. Even though they came from different background, those entrepreneurs have a same vision and mission to realize and successful in this business concept. Asian Texas is a cafe that is focusing to serve customer with western foods and beverages. This caf comes out with varieties of foods and beverages which include drink, appetizer, main course, and dessert. The name of the caf represents the theme and atmosphere of this caf. Asian Texas not only offers western foods and beverages for their customer, but they also try to bring the physical culture of Texass traditional Cowboy as the atmosphere and theme of the cafe to serve the Asian customers. Besides that, in order to make this caf become more interesting, Asian Texas also put much effort to come out with the design of a Texas traditional taverns design. Customers also accompanied with country music to create an enthusiastic atmosphere for customers in caf. The customer also served by well trained and friendly waiters or waitresses with proper uniform (refer to Appendix 2). Asian Texas is located at Jalan Tun Jugah in Premier 101. This location is one of the

competitive advantages for Asian Texas, because Premier 101 is one of the most crowded and strategic food centers in Kuching. This location located nearby many several big collages, schools and offices and many housing residents. Asian Texas target to almost all ages of customer which include children, youngster, and adult customers because this caf provides many types of products for different customers based on

their tastes and preferences such as breakfast package, lunch attack package, kid package, romantic package and so on. 2.1 Vision Become a well-known brand of Western Cafe in whole Malaysia. 2.2 Mission Give a different experience of western food cafs concept to Kuching society. Satisfying customer with a high quality of food and services. Attract the loyal customers through our innovative and interesting program. To be able to maximize the profit margin of caf. Gain a rapid growth of caf consistently.

CHAPTER 3 PURPOSE OF BUSINESS PLAN The main purpose of conducting this business plan is more toward to the financing purpose. With this great concept of small business that presented in this business plan, it will be easier for Asian Texas to create an interest and trust from the bank for financing the business. Besides the financing purpose, the other purpose for Asian Texas to come out with this business plan is to create a focus for the caf. This is because the business plan keeps a lot of fundamental information about the company, especially about the vision and mission. Through all those important data, the business plan will become good a guideline for the management of cafe. Through this business plan, Asian Texas will be able to help the management to avoid the problems in loss of focus.

CHAPTER 4 MANAGEMENT PLAN 4.1 Owner Background Lee Hui Sing (Operations Manager) Lee Hui Sing is a Malaysian who came from Kuching City. She was a former operations manager in one of the Bombay Species branches in Kuching, she worked for 4 years from 2005 to 2009. In 2011, she successfully got her Bachelor of International Hospitality Art from Taylor University. She will be appointed to be an Operations Manager in the Asian Texas because of her broad experiences in food service industry. Hii Soon Ing (Financial Manager) Hii Soon Ing is a Malaysian that came from Sibu City. She was a financial adviser of CIMB Bank for 3 years. In 2008, she got her degree in Accounting from Inti College Sarawak. Her great knowledge and experiences in finance make her to become a Financial Manager in Asian Texas. Fendri (Marketing Manager and Human Resource Manager) Fendri is one of the partners in this partnership project who come from Indonesia, before that, he was a marketing manager of Singapore Chicken Rice for 3 years from 2003 to 2006. In 2010, he was successfully got his Master which Major in Business Administration. Considering with his experiences in marketing area, he will be in charged to become a Marketing Manager and a Human Resource Manager in Asian Texas. Xing Nian Long (Executive Chef and Food & Beverage Manager) Xing Nian Long is one of the business partners who come from China. He graduated as a Bachelor of Culinary Art and Food Service Management in the year of 2008 and he used to be a chef in Hilton Kuching for 3 years from 2009 to 2012. His relevant experiences as a chef in Hilton Kuching make him to be in charged to become Executive Chef in Asian Texas.

4.2 Job Descriptions I. Operations Manager (Lee Hui Sing) Lee Hui Sing as an Operations Manager has to be able to oversee the daily operation in the Asian Texas. An operations manager has to be able to build a team work with the other managers in planning, coordinating, directing of the caf. Operations Manager responsible in organizing the use of resources and materials, managing daily operation in Asian Texas. The Operations Manager has to make sure that all materials and equipment used in food preparation can be used properly. II. Financial Manager (Hii Soon Ing) Budget the companys capital for both short and long term. Controlling income and cash flow of company. Responsible in distributing staffs salary and ensuring the staff salaries is match with their working hour or overtime. She has to analyze the financial statement of Asian Texas Caf, whether it is making profit or loss and she also has to find the solution for it. Then, she has to represent the financial report to top management. III. Marketing Manager (Fendri) As a Marketing Manager, Fendri has to create routine interesting events to attract more customers to Asian Texas. Fendri also has to advertise the Asian Texas out to the Kuching society through different types of media such as Internet and other offline promotion techniques. He has to establish attractive promotion in attracting new customers to the Asian Texas. Manage and update the Asian Texass webpage in Facebook. Responsible in creating a social network with the target market through social networking. IV. Human Resource Manager (Fendri) Fendri is responsible in recruiting new staff for Asian Texas.

V. VI. Chef Chef is responsible in selecting and purchasing ingredient to keep the quality of the food. Chef has to know how to design the food in order to satisfy the customers. Receiving the food order and cook the food in the appropriate amount of time. Chef has his authority to command the chef assistant to help him in preparing the ingredient and so on. VII. Chef Assistant VIII. Keep the cleanliness of the kitchen Receiving the order from the Executive Chef and Chef Estimating and reviewing the kitchen inventory Helping the Executive Chef to come taste a new and innovative recipe Responsible to overtake the job in kitchen when the chef absences. He also has responsible in providing training for the new staff. He is responsible to distribute the salary for the all staff. Become a mediator between staff and operations manager. Executive Chef (Xin Nian Long) He is responsible in food standard quality to ensure all the food that out from the kitchen are meet the quality that has been set. Xin Nian Long has to be able to spot problems in the kitchen and resolve it quickly and efficiently. Responsible to maximize the productivity of Chef and Chef Assistant. He is controlling the stock of ingredients so that all are enough for certain duration. As a leader in the kitchen crew, Xin Nian Long has to make sure that customers are not waiting for too long for their foods. Innovating the innovative type of western food for customers.

Waiter or Waitress Waiter or Waitress has to be friendly, fun, and polite in serving customers.

IX. Waiter or Waitress has the responsibility to take order from the customer. Waiter or Waitress has to know and understand the menu very well to be able to give recommendation to the customer about the food. Able to communicate in English, Chinese and Malay.

CHAPTER 5 ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS 5.1 SWOT Analysis Strength The cowboy concept adopted by Asian Texas can be very unique where there is no other caf with this kind of concept available in Kuching. Asian Texas is located at Premier 101 which known as a strategic location. Asian Texas offers a variety of interesting packages which target to all age of customers. Asian Texas offers an affordable price for the customers. Availability of sufficient parking spaces in Premier 101 area. The previous job experiences of the business partners.

Weaknesses Eastern Texas faces a limitation of financial capital. The cost for renovation is quite high as Asian Texas is adopting the concept of cowboy.

There are many other caf and coffee shops who offer the similar menu and even lower price. Another threat can be the rising price of special ingredients such as sugar, flour and eggs. The inflation is a threat for Asian Texas as well.

5.2 PEST Analysis Political The government in Malaysia has established the Food Safety and Quality Division, Ministry of Health was established in order to ensure that the food processing activities are managed according to the required hygiene and safety standards (myGovernment, n.d.). It is essential for Asian Texas to ensure cleanliness of the caf since the food safety has been highly concerned. Malaysia government has imposed a high corporate tax rate of 25% (TaxRates, 2012). The corporate tax rate is quite high for Asian Texas as it is a new and small business with limited financial resources. According to Malaysian Labour Law, an employee should not work for more than 8 hours per day (JobsDB.com, 2012). Asian Texas will have to organize two shifts for the

workers where the operating hours for the cafe is 9am to 1am. This law has caused the costs of Asian Texas to increase. The minimum wages policy of RM 800 for Sabah and Sarawak will be implemented by January 1, 2013 (Teoh, 2012). The labour costs of Asian Texas have increased due to the implementation of this policy. Economic The Budget 2013 has focused on the economic development as well as to improve the living standard of Malaysians (The Star Online, 2012). This can be one of the favorable factors for Asian Texas since the consumers will have higher spending power. The costs of foods and beverages in Malaysia have increased (The Star Online, 2009). This has brought a great impact to Asian Texas as the costs of the caf will increase. Social In Malaysia, there is a growing trend of eating out culture due to the busy schedule of the people. This can be a business opportunity for Asian Texas as the demand for food services increase. The customers are desire for the healthier lifestyle in recently. As the healthy issues have been concerned, Asian Texas will reduce the uses of oil and sugar in order to prepare the foods and drinks in a healthier manner. Technology The advancement of Internet has brought a great impact in todays business. With the use of Internet, Asian Texas will be able to conduct Internet marketing that required lower marketing budget rather than the traditional ways of marketing. The POS system also enables Asian Texas to track sales and inventory in an efficient and effective manner. It can solve several problems regarding to operational and recordkeeping of the business (Wuorio, 2011).

5.3 Porter Five Forces Threat of New Entrants (High) Low capital requirement in doing food and beverage business open the big gate for new entrant to access in food service industry. Increase of Kuching population which impact to grow of food demand attracts more competitors to jump into this industry. There is no difficulty for the new entrant to get access with the suppliers. Customer doesnt incur any significant cost in switching to other western restaurant. Legal requirement to run this food and beverage business is easier to obtain compare to other business. Bargaining Power of Buyer (LOW) There are a large number of customers that interesting to consume a western food especially with the unique concept of cafe. Asian Texas is the only western caf with this unique concept. Unique product and concept of our western cafe make the customer to have a low bargaining power. The customers are not price sensitive. Threat of Substitute (HIGH) There are many substitutes of western food restaurant in the Premier 101 such as Chinese Food, Malay Food, India Food, and so on. Customer doesnt incur much cost in switching their restaurant. Some customers are not likely to substitute their food Bargaining Power of Supplier (LOW) As a small and business, the caf would be able to switch the supplier of the material quickly and cheaply. Food and beverage industry in Kuching has many potential suppliers. Even though they are not offering the western cuisine but they can be one of the choices of the consumers. The coffee shops and food courts who offer lower price for both of the foods and beverages can be the potential threats as well.

CHAPTER 6 PRODUCT AND SERVICE PLAN

Asian Texas has adopted the concept of cowboy as the selling point to compete with others in the competitive food service industry. This is because the concept of cowboy is relatively new in the Kuching market. By this way, Asian Texas is taking the first mover advantage which enables it to gain an edge over the competitors. Asian Texas offers a variety of foods which include breakfast, lunch, steak, burger, snack, desserts and even kids meal in order to fulfill the different tastes and preferences of the customers. The juicy sirloin steak serve with the mushroom or black pepper sauce is known as the signature dish in Asian Texas. The sirloin steak is a steak cut from the rear back portion of the beef. The chefs of Asian Texas will have the skills in cooking the sirloin steak and lock the flavor and juices in the steak. Apart from that, Asian Texas also offers healthy foods for the kids such as cereal and oat biscuits, wholegrain bread with cute design. Asian Texas offers a wide range of hot and cold beverages such as hot chocolate, soft drinks, fresh juice, milkshake, ice blended, beer, red wine, and so on. Therefore, these can be the selling points of Asian Texas.

On the other hand, Asian Texas will also provide live band performance for every Friday to Saturday from 9am to 12am. By this way, Asian Texas will be able to provide a comfortable, relax and romantic environment to the customers. The caf will offer times for customers to get themselves to try to present their favorite song on the stage as well. A LCD is also installed in the caf for playing movies to the customers during the weekdays where there is no live band performance. Besides that, the caf also provides free WiFi for the customers which enable them to surf the Internet while listening to the music. Therefore, Asian Texas can be a good place for students and youngsters to gathering and chit-chatting with their friends before or after class since there are numbers of schools and colleges are located near the Premier 101 area. In order to make the caf unique, Asian Texas also offer photo shooting services. As requested by the customers, the waiters or waitresses will help the customers to take photo by using the instant camera. The customers can get the photo instantly and keep the memorable moments with their friends and family.

CHAPTER 7 MARKETING PLAN 7.1 Marketing Objective In the business plan, marketing objective is a key component that helps Asian Texas operates the business in Kuching market. Marketing Objective helps the caf highlight the purpose of the business and expressed it into marketing goals. In order to achieve the goals, the objectives will be set as measurable and also state the time frame to achieve.

Companys Objectives: Achieve the awareness until 50% within the year of 2013. Achieve the responses from target market by 5% for every month.

7.2 Market Analysis Market analysis is a method the company uses to look at the market and determine out opportunities and threats as relate to the strength and weakness of the company (McGuigan, 2012). 7.2.1 Market Trends Based on the research that the Asian Texas had distributed, the result shows that there are 56% of the respondents are having their meals outside regularly. Now, there are more people understand on restaurant culture, so, people in Kuching would like to dinning outside. This reflects that the trends of the living style had changed. People prefer eating outside rather than eating at home. For example, as the living standard is improved, lots of the parents need to have worked in order to provide a better living environment for their family. Due to the reason parents have no enough time and energy for them to cook after they finish their work of the day. Therefore, people prefer to eat outside. Also, the youngest nowadays like to try all the new things. While there is a new caf or restaurant open, teenagers would like to go for a try with friends and even share or recommend the foods to others. Next, the areas population increases recently by the

Song Plaza and Premier 101 has become very popular and recognition, and found in the local news and magazine coverage also. From the market development and population at Jalan Song and Jalan Tun Jugah area, it seems becoming more crowded and it gradually become famous entertainment area in Kuching. 7.2.2 Market Growth According to the research of Sarawak Government, the economic in Sarawak has been transformed in recent years; the government is developing the states infrastructure, high-tech industries and renewable energy sources if compare to before (Sarawak Government, 2102). According to the YouCompile (2011), Kuching had been developed rapidly in this recent year. Kuching is the capital of Sarawak and it is the biggest city in Sarawak with the population over 681,901 in year 2012 (Sarawak Government, 2012). In order to make the economics of Kuching city more prosperity, there had lots of shopping center is built and some building still under construction and will scheduled to be completed in 2012 and some will be future projects, such as CityOne Mall, Boulevard Shopping Mall Phase two, Kuching Sentral, Metro City and others. These developments will help to boost up the economics of Kuching now and also future. Sarawak Corridor Renewable Energy (SCORE) initiative to transform Sarawak into developed State with the promise of economic growth and development state by year 2020 in order to have better standard of living for people. With the well development economic, the rises of tourism give Kuching city opportunities to push to continue improving in all services and development of the city (Edipresse Asia, 2012). Therefore, there are more and more Shopping mall had been development up at every corner. Besides, Kuching People are now starting with dine out culture, and with the research, there are more young crowd make up the largest demographic of dine outside at restaurant or caf. As the spending power of Kuching People gradually increase, it leads to make new restaurant or Caf are open and coming up soon (Edipresse Asia, 2012). As Asian Texas will be open up soon at Premier 101, Jalan Tun Jugah, Kuching, the developments there are prosperity; there are many residential, shops, malls, colleges, Primary and Secondary school, banks and others. Therefore, the owners believe the development and market growth at Premier 101 can become the opportunity of successful trend for Asian Texas.

7.3 Target Market As Asian Texas is a modern caf that adopting the new concept of Cowboy in Kuching, the target market will be working adults, student, kids and tourists. Based on the research questionnaire, Asian Texas will focus more the marketing efforts on these groups of customers. Working Adults There is a lot of working adults which consists of both female and male young adults or adults with the ages of 20 years old to 55 years old are available in Kuching. Working adults is the primary target market of Asian Texas. As the working adults have facing high level of stress during their working time, he or she probably will spend the time to relax, hang out or gathering with friends in a caf under comfortable environment during free time. Working adults more prefer to take meals in a restaurant or caf instead of cooking at home in order to make their life easy. In addition, especially the young working adults like to eat outside and having some alcoholic beverage at entertainment venues with friends if compare with other older age group. Besides that, working adult tends to be urbanites with relatively higher income, professional careers and a focus on social welfare. Therefore, he or she has ability to afford and will be willing to spend their money on good dining and service at high prices. Students Students can be targeted as second group of customer by the Asian Texas, as in todays, young people like to eat outside and tend to enjoy the casual full-service caf with the fun and new concept. There are many schools and colleges near Jalan Tun Jugah, Premier 101 area such as INTI College Sarawak, FTMS, Sunway College, UCSI, Swinburne University, Secondary schools and so on. Therefore, instead of only targeting the local students, the international students are also targeted as there are many colleges around Jalan Tun Jugah, Premier 101 area. Asian Texas is a modern caf which provide western foods; it is easier to target the international students who are having similar culture. Asian Texas can be a good place for students to hang out, write term paper, discussion, relax, do celebration and meet friends as well. In addition, the students, especially boys or Cowboy lovers are probably attracted by the concept and the music that provided in the caf and the main point for the business as this is the first caf that adopts the concepts of Cowboy in Kuching.

Kids Asian Texas also targets the kids as one of the consumers in the market. Asian Texas not only provides the foods for adults but also offer the kids meal with cute design in order to attract the attention of kids. As the environmental change, parents hope their children can grow healthy, therefore, Asian Texas adds in many healthy ingredients into meals for the kids. It is easy to target the kids as if they like the meals, kids will request their parent to bring them here to have a meal again. Besides, kids are often attract by some new stuffs that never seen, or characters that only seen on TV. Therefore, the concept of the caf will be very new and interesting for kids too. Seems parents and kids have same attractive from the caf concept, therefore, this kind of caf can become the place for family gathering. Tourists Sarawak is a preferred tourist destination for those seeking culture, nature and adventure tourism. Most of the tourists are attracted by the ancient rainforests, intricate rivers, beautiful beaches and the colorful diversity of Sarawak. As the capital of Sarawak, Kuching has attracted a lot of tourists from the western countries such as Australia, British, United State and so on. As Asian Texas is a cowboy concept caf, the western tourists will have a sense of harmony and belonging as they may feel surprising and will go to try the caf that have the similar own culture in Asian country. In addition, even though there has lots of relaxing and enjoying caf in western countries, those tourists still prefer to choose a caf to have their meals in a relax and comfortable environment. Besides the tourists from western country, the tourists from other countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, India are probably attracted by the concept of cowboy used by Asian Texas as they have never try or meet this kind of caf in own countries. 7.4 Market Research The objective of this research is to investigate the customers tastes and preferences in order to indentify the potential market for Asian Texas in Kuching. This research is conducted by distributing 100 questionnaires (refer to Appendix 3) to the respondents in The Spring shopping mall and Premier 101, Jalan Tun Jugah area. Kuching is the capital and most populous city of the East Malaysian states of Sarawak with the population of approximately 681,901. The population of Kuching that provide a large market has become one of the opportunities for the business (refer to Appendix 4).

7.5 Marketing Strategies While the caf heavily saturated on the market, entrepreneur must come out with a good marketing strategies. Strategic market objectives are goal to be accomplished by an

organization's overall marketing program intent to sustain and improve the competitive strength of the organization such as create customers value, market share, or profitability (Perner, 2008). A good objective will be measurable, attainable, and socially significant. In order to achieve plan objectives, marketers craft strategies regarding the 4P`s which are Product, Price, Place and Promotion (Small Business Notes, n.d.). Product A product is the benefit that satisfies the needs of organizations or customers and for which they are willing to exchange money (Mind Tools Ltd, 2012). Asian Texas is mainly selling the western foods and beverage for our customers. The products can be categories into breakfast, lunch set, main courses, appetizer, dessert, beverage, alcoholic beverage, and kids meals. The caf will focus more on the safety and quality of foods that serve to the customers. The caf will provide freshness and cleanness foods to the customers in order to fulfill their meets. In addition, the caf will also provide the healthy foods like focus the health of the kids which all the healthy foods is made by wholegrain or wholemeal bread, low- fat fillings, fresh variety fruits, less sugar drinks and so on. As the caf has a good environment for working adult to relax and enjoy the time with their friends, the caf has come out with the happy hours for the alcoholic beverage. Therefore, the caf would like to refresh the menu and always coming with new dishes in order to meet the customers need and to build long lasting relationship with them. Pricing Price is the value which a company provides to their products or services to their customers (Mind Tools Ltd, 2012). In other words, price is what a buyer pays to acquire products from a seller. Pricing is an important component that emerge the turnover of the organization. When owner begin with the business, marketers need to have good pricing strategy as to fulfill the ability of consumers purchasing power. With establish of pricing strategy, marketers need to focus on their consumers whether they are established price points for products or services (Mind Tools Ltd, 2012). If price is set too high or too low would bring a loss for the company (Learning Marketing, 2012).

According to the research, suggest that the profit of the organization will have a huge influenced by the pricing strategy that used (Knowlegde@Wharton, 2003). Therefore, Asian Texas is using the competitor- based pricing strategies in order to compete with others. As there are many caf serve with the western foods in Kuching market, customers are faced with a variety of choice of who to consume from. The caf use the going- rate pricing to set their price like follow the price of the competitors (Riley, 2012). Normally customer will have a mindful of what is a reasonable and normal price in the market. By using these pricing strategic, customer will visit to the caf not because of the price of the product but is due to the reason of the good environment and quality of foods. In Asian Texas, the caf offers the affordable price on the products, such as the price range for the breakfast is from RM 3.00 to RM 4.50, lunch set from RM 6.90 to RM 8.90, main courses is within RM 6.90 RM 25.90, appetizers from RM3.00 to RM 6.00, desserts from RM 2.50 to RM 7.50, snacks is from RM 2.80 to RM 5.50, kids menus is within RM 2.00 to RM 8.50, beverages from RM 2.00 to RM 6.90, and the alcoholic beverage price is around RM 43.90 to RM 200.00. For the alcoholic beverage, if customer would like to bring own wine and Vodka, the caf might charge RM 15.00 for each. If the customers order the Vodka, the caf would free 3 cans of 7-up for their customers. In order for all consumers can enjoy our products and services, the caf offer with competitive pricing that selling price in the same line with rivals and it also helps the caf to maximizing the profits too. Place Place is for buyers to look for products and services (Mind Tools Ltd, 2012). Before entrepreneur start up the business, entrepreneur need to have a detail planning as to plan where to open up the caf, which areas are suitable and how entrepreneur start up the business such as buy or rent a shop lot. In the business plan of Asian Texas, the caf choose and do open up the business at Premier 101 at Jalan Tun Jugah. It was a prime location as there will have lots of new shopping center opened soon and also in the next few years. As the concept of Asian Texas which let the customer feel relaxing ambience while consumers are having breakfast, lunch, hitea, dinner and supper, therefore, the caf would like to choose Premier 101 as the flow of people over there. The flows of people are many as there are many students from Inti College, FTMS,

It really a huge and good investment in order to fully customize the entire cafe with that concept which gives citizen in Kuching has the chance to see and feel the cowboy concept like in other country. Besides that, Asian Texas is opening up at the corner on ground floor, as consumers can easily notice about the shop. Promotion The concept of promotion is where and when marketers can get across the marketing messages to the target market (Mind Tools Ltd, 2012). Asian Texas is using of offline and online methods to communicate with our current and potential customers. One of the promotion methods in the caf is loyalty schemes. For those whose always visit to the shop, the caf can give them a membership cards. The benefits for the memberships cards are to get promotion such as 10% off for every time dine-in to the caf and customers can get 20% off and a selected free drink to the birthday girl or boy when on their birthday. Another benefit for loyalty membership can use of member cards to collect point every time when they are dining in. therefore, when customers collect the point till the target set, then, consumers can receive a cash vouchers from the caf as gift. 7.6 Promotion Methods Asian Texas adopt both online and offline promotion techniques in order to retain existing customers and gain more new customers. By using these promotion methods, Asian Texas can build a better relationship with the customer as well as boost the sales of the business. Asian Texas focus more on the online promotion rather than the offline promotion as the online promotion will be more cost effective. It is also environmental friendly for Asian Texas to adopt online promotion techniques where less paper is needed if everything done through Internet. Therefore, there is no marketing budget for online promotion techniques as all is free and have prepared around RM 2,700 for the offline promotion method (refer to Appendix 5). 7.6.1 Online Promotion Techniques Online promotion uses communication via the Internet itself to raise awareness about a site and drive traffic to it (Chaffey, 2008). Asian Texas will use the several online promotion techniques which include email marketing, social media and Groupon. E-mail Marketing Asian Texas can use email marketing as an online promotion technique. Email marketing has become one of the most profitable and economical ways to manage customer relationships as email is free. The customer not only can register a member card in the caf but also through online method and customers who join the membership will be asked to leave email address. Asian Texas can send any email to the members during the promotion period or when there are any new dishes with picture. Also, Asian Texas can inform the customers about the entertainment that caf had provided as well as the events that held each period. By using e-mail marketing, it can help the caf to maintain the profitable customer relationship by keeping contact with consumers regularly. Social Media Asian Texas can also adopted social media as an online promotion technique. The social media can used by Asian Texas include Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, blog and so on. For example, the reason why chooses to do online promotion through Facebook is because of the stickiness of the website. According to The Associate Press (2012), the research shows that there are 1.01 billion people are using Facebook each month and it is the largest popular social networking website. There will be high chances for the Internet users to be aware of the promotion offered by the caf. The advertisement and promotion activities can be introduced through people easily in the world of social media. Besides that, the commercial video of Asian Texas at YouTube also can be linked to Facebook so that the other Facebook users can view the video as well. In addition, the online users can ask any question of the restaurant and give some feedback on these social media. Also, the caf can upload any of the dishes and environments photos of the caf on the Facebook, users will attract by the foods and atmosphere which is recommended by other people who had been there before.

Groupon Groupon also can be an effective way to promote the Asian Texas. Asian Texas is new in Kuching, for consumer behavior, he or she might not dare to try to the new caf. It is because consumers scare the money had spent in the Asian Texas Caf are unworthy. Therefore, the caf can use of the Groupon page to gain the trust of the customers. Groupon promotion can help to increase traffic and expand the customer base with no initial investment. Groupon promotion might be risky as the caf cannot earn the profit on it. For example, as the concept of Groupon promotion, normally the discount will be giving up from 50% offer per meal. By using this method, even the caf might lose the profit, but the caf might win customer traffic. Customers are the most important criteria in every business. If customers satisfied with the meals and give a good comment to the caf, the customers may visit to the caf frequently and will help to promote to their friends. By using Groupon, it is a kind of promotion method that not only brings the benefit in short run but is for the future as well. 7.6.2 Offline Promotion Techniques Offline promotion is used the communication tools such as advertising and PR delivered by traditional media such as television, radio, newspaper, magazine advertising, word of mouth to promote the caf (Chaffey, 2008). Asian Texas can use those methods to promote website such as, newspaper, voucher or coupon, flyer, member card and events. Newspaper Newspaper is the best to start to advertise the products or services. It is very cheaply with a simple short message in the advertisement. In our daily life, almost everyone reads the newspapers. For example, Asian Texas can place the advertisement on the Borneo Post and Sin Chew Daily in order to attract more customers to visit the restaurant. By using newspaper, Asian Texas can advertise some sales promotion and also can invite some journalists to write some article about the restaurant. Flyer Flyer is the way for Asian Texas as it is cheap and price effective for promoting. The purpose of using flyer to promote the caf is creating the image between the people of its existence and let the people aware of the caf. Voucher or Coupon By the way, Asian Texas can use of gift or discount vouchers or coupon as for consumers to enjoy promotion while they are dines in. Voucher can be defined as incentive for future purchases. Asian Texas can give out the gift or discount vouchers or coupon (refer to Appendix 6&7) for customers who consume certain amount in our caf such as 5% off when dine in with RM 50.00 and above in single receipt for every dine in by using the voucher. With the uses of the voucher or coupon promotion technique, it can help the restaurant to generate more flow of people come to the restaurant. Member Card Member card is another way for Asian Texas to make the customers become more loyal to the business (refer to Appendix 8). Customers pay RM 10.00 for the member card and need to renew for every year. By using the member card, the member can enjoy 10% discount on the meals while every dine-in. Also, the caf can also give out the discount vouchers or coupon for customers who reach the target of the membership points. For example, 10,000 point can get RM 10.00 cash voucher. Customer can use the cash voucher immediately or keep for next dine-in. In addition, during their birthday, member can enjoy 20% discount on the meals and get one selected free drink. Events Most of the customer enjoy the period during the event, therefore, Asian Texas will create some event for the customers. As Asian Texas is the new caf in Kuching, the caf will have a grant opening discount for the first two week of the month while opening. The caf can come out with different discount each day. For example, the customer can enjoy buy one free one for the certain drinks for the first two week and 10% discount on the meal, 10% discount on the dessert and others. Asian Texas can advertise the event on the newspaper in order to make people aware of the discount. It can attract customers to visit to the caf and increase awareness of the name of the caf as well as recognition of the product quality that provided.

CHAPTER 8 OPERATIONS PLAN This chapter will discuss on how Asian Texas will be operated in terms of location, operation hours, equipment, and labour force as well as how products or services will be produced. Apart from that, this chapter also will determine the comprehensive control systems of Asian Texas. 8.1 Location The Asian Texas is strategically located at the ground floor in the corner shop lot at Premier 101 in Jalan Tun Jugah (refer to Appendix 9). The Figure 2 shows that the total area of Asian Texas is 195.07 square meters which make up by 9.141m in width and 21.43m in length (refer to Appendix 10). The rental for the shop lot is RM 3,400.00 per month. As located in Premier 101, it can be one of the strengths for Asian Texas since this area is prospering. Premier 101 is located in a high traffic flow location which connecting the city centre to Kuching International Airport. This area is known as a growing residential and commercial centre in Kuching city (refer to Appendix 11). Besides that, there are many schools and colleges are located near the Premier 101 area. Since the student is known as the target market of Asian Texas, there will be sufficient population of these potential customers. It is quite convenience for the customers to enjoy their meals where there are number of parking spaces available for the customers. The conveniency of the location also benefits the suppliers in delivering the raw materials to Asian Texas. However, there are other cafes and restaurants located in the Premier 101 area such as Myst Cafe, Petes Western as well as other coffee shops. They are known as the threats for Asian Texas. 8.2 Operation Hours Asian Texas is operating for six days in a week where Tuesday will be the day of rest. The opening hours of Asian Texas is from 9am to 1am as the caf provides breakfast, lunch, dinner and even supper.

8.3 Equipment There are several types of equipment are needed for the operations of Asian Western which include: furniture and fixtures such as tables and chairs for the customers and renovation of the restaurant that using the concept of cowboy; stoves for cooking the meals; oven for baking the cupcake, bread, and other desserts; refrigerators for storing the ingredients such as fruits, vegetables, meats, drinks, and the desserts; boiler for boiling the water; POS system for tracking sales and inventory; air conditioner for removing the heat from indoor air for thermal comfort; LCD for showing the movie to customers; CCTV for the use of security. The costs for purchasing this equipment are around RM 45,000.00 (refer to Appendix 12). The equipment with high quality have been purchased in order to ensure that the equipment are safety to use and able to last longer. 8.4 Labour Force Asian Texas will hire two chefs, two chef assistants, and two bar tenders for preparing and providing the foods and drinks that satisfy the tastes and preferences of the customers. There are four waiters or waitresses will be hired for serving the foods and drinks to the customers. There are two shifts for one day which are 9am to 5pm and 5pm to 1am. There will be 1 hour break for all of the workers. The free lunch or dinner will be provided to the workers. Four of the business partners will take on the responsibilities as the managers for managing either the front line crew or kitchen crew of the caf. The salary for a chef will be RM 2,400.00 and RM 1,200.00 for a chef assistant. The bar tender and waiter or waitress will be paid for RM 850.00. The salary for four of the managers will be RM 3000.00 for each person. The profit earned every month also will be divided by four of the business partners. Additionally, Asian Texas will also hire two live band performers as there will

be the live band performance in Asian Texas on every Friday to Saturday from 9pm to 12am. Each of the live band performers will be paid for RM 50.00 per hour. There are several criteria will be taken into considerations in selecting and recruiting the workers. The chefs must have at least two years working experience in cooking Western cuisines. For the bar tenders, they are required to have at least one year working experience in making hot and cold drinks. On the other hand, for the chef assistants, they must be hardworking and willing to learn as they will have to learn from their superiors. For the waiters and waitresses, they must be able to speak Bahasa Melayu, English and Mandarin. Besides the chefs and bar tenders, the other workers are inexperience workers. A training program will be provided to the inexperience workers in order to provide better foods and services to the customers. The HR manager and executive chef will be responsible as the trainers in training and developing the workers. The chef assistants will be trained by the executive chef on efficiency in assisting the chefs. The training program provided to the waiters and waitresses will help them to develop their communication skills so that they are able to be friendly, patient and tolerance when communicating and dealing with the customers. The on-the-job training method will be adopted for the training program. Through on-the-job training, the workers are trained at the place of work while he or she is doing the actual job (BusinessDictionary.com, 2012). This can be an effective and cost saving training method which suitable for a small business. The performance of the workers will be evaluated by the HR manager in order to keep everything work in an efficient and effective manner. As a form of motivation, the salaries of the workers will be increased where the business is growing and earning higher profit. By motivating the workers, they are encouraged to achieve better performance. Instead of only keeping the customers satisfied, Asian Texas also tend to keep the workers satisfied as they are one of the key elements of the business.

The service process will start while the customer walks into the caf. The waiter or waitress will help the customer to look for an appropriate seat according to the preference of the customer. After that, the order process will begin. The menu will be passed to the customer while the waiter or waitress will list down the order and repeat the order as to confirm the order from the customer. Then, the waiter or waitress will send the order chip to the cashier counter to key in the order into the computer. The cashier will print out a copy for the chef assistant to prepare the ingredients and another copy for the customer to confirm the order. In the kitchen area, when the chef assistant receives the order chip, he will prepare the ingredients that needed for the dishes. The chef will cook the dishes in few minutes. After finishing cooking, the chef assistant will ring the bell for informing the waiter or waitress to serve the dishes to the customer. At the end of the service process, the receipt will be given to the customer for making payment after the customer finish consuming the meals.

8.6 Control Food Quality Control The executive chef will be responsible for controlling the quality of foods in order to ensure that the foods serve in Asian Texas are safe to consume. Besides that, all of the workers in the kitchen crew are also involved in food quality control. The quality of food is defined as meeting or exceeding the expectations of the customer as promised on the menu. For a caf, the competitive advantage to attract and retain customers is to serve the customers with the foods that meet their tastes and preferences. Otherwise, it can be quite difficult for the caf to survive and sustain in the competitive market. Therefore, the foods serve in Asian Texas must be clean, cooked and prepared properly with the correct flavour. Environment Control The operations manager will be responsible for controlling the environment. Asian Texas will conduct two cleaning sessions per day in order to ensure that the environment of the caf is clean and comfortable to the customers. The operations manager will monitor the cleaning sessions in both of the front line and kitchen crew to ensure cleanliness of the caf. In addition, the operations manager will also train the workers on proper sanitary procedures such as encouraging the workers to develop the habit of washing their hands every few minutes. Since the food safety in food service industry has becoming more and more concerned by the publics, the MBKS (Majlis Bandar Kuching Selatan) will eventually carry out a regular spot check to a caf if they have received any complaints from the consumers. Asian Texas will try to achieve a Grade A status of cleanliness from the city council authority as to build and maintain a good reputation. Inventory Control The executive chef and operations manager will take on the responsibilities in controlling the inventory. They will supervise the supply, storage and accessibility of the raw materials and other stuffs that needed in preparing the foods and drinks as to ensure an adequate supply without excessive oversupply. They will deal with the suppliers who supply the raw materials to Asian Texas every morning in order to obtain the raw materials in good conditions. The First in First out (FIFO) method will be used for managing the inventories since most of the raw materials cannot be kept for a long time. Asian Texas will be run on lean inventory control by

using the POS system. By this way, the carry costs can be reduced where the space available in the caf is not sufficient for keeping a high level of inventory. Financial Control The financial manager is responsible for the financial control of Asian Texas. The main responsibility of the financial manager is to manage the cash flow in an efficient and effective manner. The financial manager will record all of the financial activities which carried out in Asian Texas such as the income statement, balance sheet, and other important financial information. With the use of income statement, it allows the financial manager to compare the costs, expenses, and profits against the sales as well as to assess the growth, stagnation, or decline of the business. The financial manager also will use the balance sheet to determine what the business owns, what it owes to others, and how much equity or net worth the owners have in the business. Security Control The HR manager is responsible for the security control of Asian Texas. The HR manager will do the planning and selecting the comprehensive security system for Asian Texas in order to minimize the security risks. A CCTV will be installed in the cashier counter area as there are huge amount of cashes available in that area. The HR manager will also try to get involved with the local police department to make sure they are aware of the restaurant closing time and regular routine so that the police will pay attention on Asian Texas during the regular cruising.

In the meeting, four partners are require to come out with own ideas, objectives, opinions or suggestions for the new small business which would like to open up in Kuching. For start up a new business is not simple, it need to consider broad range, and concern on many aspects that might face, therefore, partners need to discuss all the problems that might meet when start- up the business. At first, both partners will having different views or ideas, but, after going through all meetings, finally came out with unified solution and methods. After consider for all the problems and ideas, partners are assigned different jobs, such as go for bank loan, looking for furniture, hiring personnel and others. Finalize Suitable Location and find the suitable shop The location for the Caf is very important. After having few discussions, both partners decide with these few places: Song Plaza, Boulevard shopping mall phase II, Premier 101 and Kuching Sentral. To look for suitable location, it is possible to conduct environment analysis (PEST) and SWOT analysis. The result shows that Premier 101 at Jalan Tun Jugah is more suitable and more likely to be successful if open up business there. Registration Both partners decide to name the caf as Asian Texas with the concept of Cowboy design. Before start up the business, four partners are requiring to go through legal part, which apply licensing and permit of the Caf. To register license and get the permit, Asian Texas Cafe must go through Majlis Bandarraya Kuching Selatan. The fees charges for licensing are RM 270.00 annually. The registration will be enforcement at October 2012. Renovation, purchasing and recruiting The shop will start renovation on November- December 2012 after registration done. Asian Texas will design the shop style in comfortable and relaxing with concept of Cowboy. Asian Texas purchase all the furniture and fittings, equipments and machines, facilities needed and others. Then, will start recruiting suitable employees as well. With good business plan, four partners must show the business overview: list out the product and services that coffee house providing, environment analysis, marketing strategy such as target market, trends, marketing mix and others, the management and staffing, financial projection, and others. Start the business Four partners follow all the steps and prepare proper business plan, with conducting all the meeting and discussion with all partners, and determine all the problems and solutions, it found that Asian Texas have a potential and likely be successful when open up the business at Premier 101 at Jalan Tun Jugah, Kuching. Asian Texas will start the business on January 2013. The business will run as slow as steady, and ensure to provide with quality products and services for customers in order to meet their preferences.

They have a good track record about the payment for the credit card. o Based on the financial forecast, the business will be able to make profit on the first month while operations. Mean o Asian Texas will make use of POS (Point of Sale) system to create detail sales of the business for every day. o The Financial Manager is an experienced accountant who capable in managing the cash flow of the business in an efficient and effective manner. Purpose o The purpose of applying loan from bank is to support the start-up capital in opening this caf. Amount o Asian Texas expects to get additional funds of RM 50,000.00 from bank. Repayment o The annual interest rate that requested from the bank for the loan is 11%. The loan will be paid back in 5 years. o The amount of monthly installment that we have to pay back to CIMB Bank is around RM 1, 292.00 (include the interest). Insurance o Lee Hui Sing house will become collateral for this loan. The value of this collateral is approximately RM 300,000.00. 10.3 Financial Projection The Asian Texas Caf management will fully utilize the resources available by minimizing wastage that avoiding unnecessary expenses or wastage in order to be more efficient. In order to build trust and better relationship with the creditors, Asian Texas management team will ensure that the bills will pay on time. Building trust and better relationship with suppliers, they will give the better credit term for Asian Texas. In order to save cost and have more funds to turnover, the management team will purchase the stock in bulk which can enjoy the cheaper price.

Financial manger will ensure an accurate record of the financial transactions in order to know the value of the business, sales and funds available. By using the online promotion technique, Asian Texas can reduce the cost in marketing. Facebook can be a good media for Asian Texas to advertise its products and services since Facebook is a high traffic social media. Moreover, this strategy will enable the caf to interact with more customers. As the business growth, Asian Texas is planning to open a new branch and expand the business to Miri. By expanding the business to new market, it can help the business gain more profit and grow bigger.
