    UponlaunchingVictoriav4.2,youwillseethefollowingWindow:

    Makesureyouhaveharddrivesconnectedtoyoursystem.Ifyouhaveproblemsgettingyourdrive detectedthroughPIO,APImodemayworkbestforyou.Thebuttonsattheupperright,allowsyouto changethemodeoftheprogram.

    SelectingAPImodewillswitchtheprogramintoWindowsNativemode.This willalsoallowUSBdevicestobescanned.Bewarned,however,asSMARTdatacannotbecollectedvia USBsupport.APImodeisusefulfordrivesthatarenotdetectedduringPIOmode,orfordrivesthatare jumperdinsuchawaythatonlyWindowscanmountthedriveasaletter,butcannotmountitwhen connectedtoaddincardsinthesystem. Next,ifyouClickthebigPCIScanbutton,youwillgetalistinglikethis:

    Theentryhighlightedinblueisthedrivethattheapplicationisrunningoffof.(Toreducefilecorruption, donttrytoscanrunningdrives).Selectthedriveyouwishtoscanbydoubleclickingitsentryinthelist.

    Thisallowsyoutoaltertheamountofnoiseaharddrivemakeswhilereadingandseekingfordata.In mostcases,changingthisvaluewillresultineitherhigherorlowerperformance.Forgoodmeasure, turningoffAcousticmanagemententirelywillresultinthequickestaccesstimesavailabletothedrive.

    Alsotakenoteifthedrivehas48bitLBA.Ifthegreenblockontheleftisnotgreen,andthecheckboxin thelowerrighthandcornerisnotcheckedoff,yourIDE/SATAcontrollermaybeunabletoreaddrives largerthan137GB.Youcantrytogetitworkingbycheckingoffthe48bitcheckbox,butthereareno guarantees.

    ThenextimportantfeatureistheSMARTtab.IfyouclickGetSMART,youwillgetsomethinglikethis:

    Someoftheseitemswillnotexistonotherdrives.ThisisfromaSATAWesternDigitalDrive.Takenote oftheIDcolumn,asallSMARTtesterrorsarereportedwiththisID. #1,4,5,6,10,11,194,196,197,198,199aremostimportant.Theywillallvarybetweendrive manufacturersandmodels.ForSeagateANDMaxtorharddrives,only#5,11,196,197,198,199willbe applicable,asthesedrivesreportbothGoodandBadresultsasasingleresult. Generallyspeaking,ifyourdrivereportsaRawvalueofmorethan1inID#5,196,or199,youhavea failingdrive.ID#197&198areWindowsgeneratederrors.Afullscanoftheharddrivewillneedtobe performedinordertofindoutifthedriveisactuallyfailing,orifthefilesystemisfailing.

    ThisistheSMARTtestbox.Itwillallowyoutoperformvarioustests ontheharddrive,ofwhicharebuiltintotheSMARTmodulesinthefirmwareoftheharddrive.
