Neelam Valley (also spelled Neelum Valley) (Urdu: ) is a 200 km long bow-shaped [1] deeply forested region in Azad

Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. It is consist of Neelam District has two tehsils Athmuqam and Shardah. Neelam Valley is situated at the North & North-East of Muzaffarabad, running parallel to Kaghan Valley. The two valleys are only separated by snow-covered peaks, some over 4000 meters above sea level. Excellent scenic beauty, panoramic views, towering hills on both sides of the noisy Neelam river, lush green forests, enchanting streams and attractive surroundings make the valley a dream come true The valley is connected from Muzaffarabad by Neelam road, which leads up to Kel. The road condition from Muzaffarabad to Athmuqam is very good and suitable for any kind of transport. From Keran to Kel road condition is not well and not suitable for low floor vehicles. In winters road after Keran block due to heavy snowfall and it is very difficult to reach upper parts of the valley. Vans serve is only Muzaffarabad to Athmuqam after every 30 minutes. Buses run daily between Muzaffarabad and Kel in good weather. Jeeps and horses are available to reach remote areas of the valley.

Towns and Villages

Authmuqam Authmuqam is 10 kilometers from Kundal Shahi of a height of 1371 meters. It is the sub-divisional headquarter of the area and serves as a take-off point for tourists interested in hiking and exploring the inner valley. It is an attractive place known for its variety of fruit. All necessary facilities viz bazaar, post office banks, hospital, telephone and PWD east house are available here. Neelum At a distance of about 9 kilometers from Authmuqam. Neelum is situated on the right bank of the river Neelum 1524 meters above sea level. It has a fascinating scenery. The village has a population of about one thousand, a small bazaar and a tourist rest house situated on the bank of meandering river Neelum across from where the Indian held Kashmir is also visible. The panoramic lush green valley, profound in wild fruit and wildlife, attracts the tourists from every nook and corner of the country. Owing to its tourist attraction, AJK Tourism Department is planning to develop this area. 2 motels, 15 tourist huts, cafeteria and a tuck shop will be constructed here Dowarian

Neelum

Dowarian is situated about 13 kilometers from Neelum at an altitude of 1615 meters. It is surrounded by mountains full of conifer trees. A mule track upto Rattigali Pass , about 30 kilometers towards west, connects the Neelum and Kaghan Valleys . There is a forest rest house on the top of the hill, a tourist rest house is available for accommodation near main road. Sharda Located at a distance of 30 kilometers from Dowarian. It is a breath-taking green spot at an altitude of 1981 meters. Shardi and Nardi are two mountain peaks overlooking the valley, reputedly named after legendry princess Sharda, it has a captivating landscape with numerous springs and hill sides covered with trees. On the right bank, opposite to Sharda, the Neelum is joined by the Surgan Nallah along which a track leads to Nurinar Pass and through it to the Kaghan Valley . In Sharda, one also finds ruins of an old Budhist University . Facilities of a small bazaar, post office, health centre, public call office and rest house are available in Sharda. The AJK Tourism Department has launched a huge programme under the name of Tourist Village at Sharda . The entire project is nearing towards culmination. Tourist rest houses, youth hostel, cafeteria, game room, bridal path etc. near the jungle have been completed.

Kel

Kel A-19 kilometers journey from Sharda upstream takes one to Kel. It is a small valley at a height of 2097 meters. This is another picturesque place in the Neelum Valley . The Shounter Nallah joins river Neelum at this place and leads to Gilgit Agency over the Shandur Pass (4420 meters above sea level). Buses ply daily on this route in good weather. It is adviseable to hire a jeep from Authmuqam for a trip into the Valley. Horses and ponies can also be hired locally for travel to the interior of the Neelum Valley . Banks college hospital, bazaar and a rest house of JAK Tourism are available for accommodation. Halmat The area from Kel to Taobat is called the Halmat. The border village about 49 kilometers ahead of Kel, is a fascinating but unexplored sight Janawai, Sardari and Halmat are the most beautiful places of this area. A tourist rest house has been constructed of Halmat to provide accommodation facilities to the visitors. (Note): Some tourist places of Neelum valley are situated in the renge of line of control, therefore, sometimes it becomes difficult to visit these areas. So before to visit the valley the visitors are requested to get information from the tourism office.

Ruins of an old Buddhist University can also be found in Sharda. [1] Kel a small village situated at a height of 2097m. This is another picturesque place in the Neelum Valley. The Shounter Nallah joins river Neelum at this place and leads to Gilgit Agency (Northern Areas) over the Shandur at 4420m. [1] Dowarian is lush hilly village about 22 km away from Authmuqam. It is the base camp for Ratti Gali lake located at the border of Dawarian and Kaghan Valley. This village has very high literacy rate in all over the Neelam, which is about 80%. In Dowarian there are oldest Govt school also located.

Those who have set foot on this land call it heaven on earth. To spend some time away from the boiling city heat and escape from the overcrowded hill stations, all you need is some financial backing and an open mind to venture beyond your comfort zone, and into the untouched. Situated in the Azad Kashmir region, this dream valley stretches from about 50 km north of Muzaffarabad till the existing Line of Control between Azad Kashmir and Indian Kashmir. The valley is connected by a road that snakes alongside the Neelum River and ends at the village of Taobat. The valley features a number of small village settlements, trekking trails, lakes, mountain passes and other unique scenic features which are spread all over the valley. Halfway along your journey on the first day, you will land at Keran. Exploring this beautiful village on the banks of the River Neelum is the closest you may get to Indian Kashmir, which lies just across the river. The riverbed here is narrow, and you can see past the gushing waves of the river to a very similar life on the other side: women sowing seeds in the fields, children playing along the banks and astonishingly similar wooden houses in the middle of grassy fields.

The two main destination points are Sharda, a quiet village one kilometre off the main road and connected via a hanging bridge, and Kel, the largest settlement in the entire region. From Sharda, the mystical Noorinar top can be sighted touching the sky. This mountain pass connecting Neelum Valley to the Kaghan Valley is a daring one-day trip for those who wish to take their adventure to the next level. This pass is marked by beautiful slopes at a stunning elevation of 13,000 ft and is decorated with endless beds of wild flowers. On a days trek from the beautiful village of Dwarian is the Ratti Gali Lake, undoubtedly a tourists favourite retreat. The lake, situated at the border between Neelum Valley and Kaghan Valley, at an elevation of 14,000 ft, features grassy meadows that beg you to tread upon them barefoot. To enjoy the other destinations that Neelum has to offer, you will need more than just curiosity. On the way from Keran to Kel, is the majestic 50m Machal waterfall, which combines the excitement of a hundred cold showers. Upon reaching Machal, you can pull out a pair of Bermudas and push yourself into a shower you will never forget. Night travel is highly recommended as the idea is to savour every moment of your adventure. If your vehicle has a sunroof, stick out your head and feel the swift air blow across your face as your jeep lights navigate through the darkness. Every nature exploration trip has its climax and Neelum Valley offers its own at Taobat. The village is a few kilometres short of the Line of Control, at the point where Neelum River enters Azad Kashmir. At the heart of this small village, surrounded by green meadows, flows the Taobat Nala or Taobat stream, with its blue waters reflecting the colours of the sky and its swift flow irrigating the corn fields alongside its bank. Crossing to the other side of the stream, you will find yourself at the banks of the Neelum River emerging from a narrow gorge at the far end of the valley. Vast grassy fields at the base of surrounding mountains, alongside the Neelum River, are of a unique kind you will rarely find elsewhere. Since nights and early mornings are a special time at Taobat, I spent some time one night beside the Taobat nala admiring the overwhelming aura of the moonlit valley. As the late hours of the night approached, the moon slowly peeked in from behind the gigantic silhouettes of the surrounding mountains, its silver blaze increasingly reflecting onto the gleaming Taobat Nala, as the voice of the stream echoed through the deafening silence. It is very difficult to explain Neelum in terms of an ordinary tourist attraction. You will not find bazaars promoting attractive regional delicacies for lunch, salesmen running around shouting saab sasta room attach bath, or roadside hotels providing attractive night-in deals. Instead, you will find nature at its purest; a small khokha offering lobia chaawal under a trees peaceful shade, and a few blokes smoking pipes, least bothered about the beauty surrounding them. The rare specialty of the Neelum Valley lies in the variety of experiences that it has to offer. From dusty rocky roads to beautiful winding treks, from heavenly green pastures to crystal clear waterfalls, and from excellent camping grounds to well-maintained hotel accommodations, Neelum Valley is a complete tourist package for all those who appreciate nature at its best.

How to get there: To begin your journey you need to take the new Murree Road in Islamabad and drive up the mountain until you reach the hill station. From there on the road starts its descent into Kashmir. Once you reach Muzaffarabad the real adventure begins, you will require a 44 jeep for the rest of your journey because of the dirt tracks left behind as a result of the catastrophic earthquake of 2005. It is also advisable to make accommodation arrangements in advance.
