JOHNNIE WALKER Factsheet

John Walker completed an apprenticeship as a tea blender before founding the business that would become JOHNNIE WALKER in 1820. He applied the principles of blending tea to whisky creating a more flavourful and consistent product.

Every second, 186 glasses of J JOHNNIE WALKER are consumed around the world.

The trademark JOHNNIE WALKER square bottle and slanting label have been in use since the 1870s allowing for larger typesetting and easier shipping. The label on every bottle of JOHNNIE WALKER is slanted at approximately 25 degrees.

The Striding Man was first sketched by cartoonist Tom Browne on the back of a lunch menu in 1908. It is now one of the worlds most recognizable brand icons.

The Walkers pioneered the art of blending and were the original master blenders. Sir Alexander Walker John Walkers grandson wrote the original blending notes for Gold Label in 1920 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the JOHNNIE WALKER brand.

In 1934 John Walker & Sons was granted a Royal Warrant by King George V to purvey whisky to the British royal family the warrant has been renewed by every monarch ever since.

At any point in time, the JOHNNIE WALKER blending team has access to over seven million casks of matured Scotch whisky which are slumbering in warehouses, the sources of which are spread across the four main whisky regions allowing the House of Walker to create great blends with great depth, balance and complexity.

JOHNNIE WALKER Black Label is the benchmark against which all other whiskies are measured one of the worlds most awarded whiskies it has been praised by whisky writers and experts and has been called a miracle of blending. One of the original blends from the House of Walker, it was originally sold as Extra Special Old Highland Whisky and has been called Black Label since 1909.

On January 5th 2011, Diageo launched a new campaign for its JOHNNIE WALKER brand in China. Entitled "Yulu" or "Words of a Journey", the campaign uses a documentary approach to tell the stories of twelve Chinese pioneers, chosen from the fields of business and the arts. The protagonists (including Pan Shiyi - SOHO international, Xu Bin- Artist, Wang Keqing - social activist and Wang Yiyang - fashion designer) reflect upon their life journeys against the backdrop of modern China.
